The American culture of today is communicated through media. Media is the most powerful and influential force in the country. The media are powerful agents of socialization and they set the standard that majority follow. The power giving to American media has allowed them to be very effective using propaganda as strategy, the media tend to say they serve to relieve social conflicts into minimum. We clearly see that the media promote social conflicts by separating class. The image that media has created in the mind of masses has economical, psychological and sociological impact the masses. The intent of the media is to satisfy their own agenda, not to inform and entertain. They been very successful using this strategy, more of their agenda less of the masses interest. Richard Cohen once said “We are going to impose our agenda on the coverage by dealing with issues and subjects that we choose to deal with.”

Journalism is an industry that provides a source of information and news for the public, while popular culture is a source of portrayal of the image of the journalist. Popular culture provides a glimpse and “shapes the people’s impressions of the news media”, whether it is portrayed in a positive or negative light. There is no denying that popular culture possesses a large effect on what the public perceives and thinks about journalists and the industry through how the characters, plotlines are presented. Sociologists have even argued that “popular culture’s depictions…of real world professions” have a major influence on the public’s realistic perception of that respective field. Thus, it is not a surprise that in the 1930s, journalist organizations deliberately advocated positive portrayals of the press in Hollywood. An example of a film that stands as a positive representation is The Front Page. Although the film presents reporters and editors “lying and hurting innocent people”, the audience is able to fall for their unique charm and charisma—they are brash, fast-paced, intelligent, composed, independent, passionate and investigative. They embody what America ultimately champions: self-reliance, drive for action and accomplishment. However, popular culture also perpetuates negative, unlovable notions that “journalists [are] hard drinking, foul-mouthed social misfits concerned with only twisting the truth”. Propaganda has played a huge role within war, presidency, and social issues.

In today’s digital-based world of smartphones, wifi, and screens in every room, it is hard to deny that people are impacted by the media around them. People are constantly exposed to digital media that affects the way they view the world, their society and themselves. While the constant exposure to media can sometimes lead to positive effects on people, this is not typically the case. Today’s TV programs, video games and other media have caused rigid gender stereotypes in society. Masculinity and femininity are defined by the entertainers and athletes people are constantly seeing on their TVs, computers and phones. The impact of this is most prominent for children. For young people who are constantly learning from their surroundings, their exposure to media affects their understanding of each gender. This leads to skewed perceptions of themselves and others, causing self-esteem issues from a young age.

It’s pretty clear that the elections are much different than they used to be, and we can blame our easy access to media for that. The people learn everything they know about politics through things they see on television and the link they just shared on facebook. But is that even real, are they polluting our minds with unnecessary drama? Anything from magazines to the social media on our iphones help influence the opinions of voters, set the behavior of the candidates, and the public agenda.
Mass media has a very influential part in today’s society. Consisting of radio broadcasting, books, the Internet, and television they allow information and entertainment to travel at a fast pace as well to a vast audience. Most of us watch television or listen to the radio on our commute in order to be up to date with the surrounding events. We depend on those sources of mass media to relay relevant and reliable information in order for us to understand pressing issues and formulate our opinions pertaining to the best approach in dealing with those issues. But what if the information relayed to us is biased and skewed or worse yet if those sources of information divert attention away from pressing matters and place the individuals in an oblivious state.
After researching the conclusion cannot be more clear that media no only creates uninformed voters but also that viewers of media have a large roll to play in that very outcome. Unfortunately, the roll of the media and its viewers are intertwined which means what one wants the other must deliver or both sides suffer, which is the stand still we have come to with political news coverage in the media today. The media has created Horse Race news coverage in order to make the election news more entertaining but in doing so they have deleted all substance based information form the material viewers watch, which is what viewers have started to mistrust the media system.
HCI has affected this age more than some other in light of the headway available these days, it has changed the way people encounter their lives, especially for blocked customers and people with needs. You would now be able to use substance to-voice or the other way, focus on that person who can't talk, can sort what they have to state and the other individual can hear it. A not too repulsive event of this is the time when I made a trek to Turkey. The servers in a burger joint we went to, used 'English to Turkish mediator' on their phones, to appreciate what we were conveying, drawing in us to talk with each other, lighting the way that we couldn't physically address each other.
As I pondered what I would do for this action project I knew I wanted to steer more towards women in the media. I have always been curious about what the public thinks about certain things, what is trending, what the common thought is on a specific thing, idea etc. As I thought about what my main focus was going to be, I remembered talking to my family about what I was learning and discussing in my Gender and Women’s Studies class and brought up how there seems to be a stigma in today’s culture on how marketing companies make it seem okay to portray women in a negative way just to get their product sold. I thought more deeply about this topic because it has always bothered me to see how companies got away with altering model’s bodies, dressing them in risqué clothing, or putting sexist blurbs smacked across an advertisement in a magazine. I wanted to find a way I could subtly bring about self-awareness to my community around me.
Three roles were given to the media according to the Constitution and are roles that they must follow. However, the media has not been following those three roles and instead has focused on reporting other issues that have no importance at all. As a result, the media has been highly criticized since it has only been reporting only the government line on issues because the media is owned by six corporate conglomerates. Although the American media has changed throughout the years due to the media ownership, it has negatively affected the media in several ways.
