My fascination of both the biological and chemical elements of the human body has led to my aspiration of becoming a doctor. I have enjoyed the discovery of new elements in my AS syllabus, from learning about the cardiovascular system to the placebo effect in drug testing. Reading a book called Sick Notes by Tony Copperfield entails an account of his daily life in his profession as a General Practitioner. I was able to see how the science in the syllabus was used in the application of General Practice. Through my work experience I understood that the GP’s job was not just based on being a general specialist but also the lives of the people around him. I shadowed a Healthcare Assistant at a GP surgery in Wembley in his morning clinic learning how the amount of carbon monoxide measured in the body along with the number of times a person smoked a day determined the treatment they were given. Immediately I witnessed how the Healthcare Assistant took heart to one the patients who came into the clinic. His tone changed towards this patient as she was smoking at such a young age. Evidentially he knew that smoking was no choice of hers but due to the circumstances of coming from an Eastern European country. …show more content…
Also assisting the Healthcare Assistant in his walk-in phlebotomy clinic showed me the importance of the doctor-patient relationship when I observed one of the patients visibly shaking from the fear of a needle that would not provoke the skin no more than half a centimetre. Most patients required a calm and reassuring approach to dissolve their fear of
On this second clinical for med-surg, I felt a bit more comfortable being on the floor. Before starting this clinical I had set a goal for myself to perform well and complete my assessment as thorough as possible. For pre-assessment I was set on just choosing a patient and not being afraid on what kind of diagnosis they had or how many medications they were on. As I selected my patient, I noticed that he had many medications and had had an ST-elevation myocardial infarction. I didn’t want to scare myself off from selecting this patient and caring for him on clinical day.
My experiences at home have helped prepare me for a career in medicine I grew up in an economically depressed area in San Francisco where my mother was a single parent. Growing up without a father, I developed self-confidence and a sense of independence at an early age. In order to help my mother financially, I unloaded produce trucks during my years in high school. As a result, I was unable to enjoy many of the activities most youngsters enjoy. However, I am thankful for the determination and inner-strength I developed while overcoming the hardships I faced.
Without doubt, it is my sincere goal and longtime aspiration to pursue a career in the medical field specializing in the area of health care. From my formative years, actually, as long as I can remember, I have taken a special interest in helping and caring for people. My strong passion for the overall health and welfare of people has been the foundation of my sparked interest in the medical field. After extensive research of the wide-range of careers in the field of medicine, I have found that I am leaning to the profession of a physician assistant (PA).
This essay is aimed to explore, analyse and discuss smoking in adults. Smoking is a public health issue as such is one of the major contributors to high mortality and ill-health in the adults which is preventable (Health and Excellence Care (NICE) (2012). The United Kingdom (UK) is known to have the highest number of people with a history of smoking among people with low socio-economic status (Scriven and Garman, 2006; Goddard and Green, 2005). Smoking is considered a serious epidemic in the UK and the National institute for Health and Excellence Care (NICE, 2012) stated that 28% of adults with low economic status are tobacco smokers compared with 13% of those with economic status or having professional

A physician assistant is a medical practitioner who works under the supervision of a licensed doctor. However the doctor does not have to be present while the physician assistant performs. If a doctor is unavailable and it is an emergency the physician assistant or PAs can talk over the phone with a doctor. Fewer than 100 PAs were practicing in 1970 and about 74,800 physician assistants are employed in the United States now (“Physician”). Physician assistants help the community everyday by helping with illness, and a lot of other health issues. They work every day to help and treat people and they are a big help to doctors. Pas alleviate some stress from the doctors and creates a healthier environment for everyone.
Physician Assistants treat, examine and diagnose patients (Occupational Outlook Handbook [OOH], 2016). For instance, they can prescribe medication, treat or diagnose an injury or sickness, read and study x-rays and blood work and much more (OOH, 2016). Physician Assistants can work anywhere like, a hospital or clinic as long as their being supervised by Physician. The PA’s scope of practice is categorized into four main parts. Education, experience, state law, facility policy and the needs of the patients (American Academy of Physician Assistants [AAPA], 2016).
Ashley came in for behavioral therapy for her adopted child Miracle who was referred by Head Start. (Ashley is Miracle’s biological aunt, but Miracle calls her mom) Miracle has been having trouble with her behavior at home and in school, she has several outbursts daily. Miracle has a hard time with authority figures, she does not like to be told what to do, she also gets angry very easily and her mood changes quickly. Miracle has become physical violent with other members of her family, she throws things at people, bites, kicks, and pulls hair. Miracle also curses and flips people off when she is anger. Ashley is unable to take her to a store because she always makes a scene in public, one time someone threated to call the police because they thought Ashly had kidnapped Miracle. Some other examples of her behavior include: Miracle was mad in school and refused to go into the classroom, the teacher had to physically pick her up and carry her in. The other day she bit a classmate and she flipped the teacher off. Yesterday morning Miracle did not want her hair brushed, so mom did
In 1896 Isabel Hampton Robb formed a group of fewer than 20 nurses and the group became the Nurses' Associated Alumnae of the United States and Canada and in 1911 the organization was renamed as the American Nursing Association. In 1889 Isabel Robb became the first Superintendent of Nurses at John Hopkins Hospital and the principle of the Training School. Isabel Robb wrote the very first nursing ethics textbook.
It is apparent from visiting with Dr. Nael P. Ghael on yesterday December 21, 2017, she was no more prepared or familiar with my medical history then she was on November 22, 2017. In November she said she would order my records from Care Now and wait on the results from the MRI. She did not know that I had physical therapy, she said to call you again about me being off work she could not do that. I told her when I did call you, you were so nasty to me and rude I did not get you to listen to why I was calling. I am going to ask you the same question I asked The Human Capital Staff if you are sending me to a doctor that does not have or will not allow one off work to heal, where will I get a doctor’s statement from. It appears I
I am responsible for arranging activities for patients and through this experience i grasped the importance of the extent of commitment and dedication necessary by observing how carers make patients feel valued with even the smallest improvements to enhance their quality of life for example, using soft water colour brushes to accommodate their needs. In order to connect with them as individuals, it was important for me to be non-judgemental as well as showing patience and compassion. Fearing the loss of a patient and noticing them enduring pain displayed an invaluable insight into the emotional and mental pressures within the reality of life as a doctor. In spite of this, it is a privilege to establish relationships with patients by building rapport and showing empathy which has strengthened my communication skills. Above all, i was thankful for the opportunity to make a diagnosis just by engaging with patients which can be a valuable contribution to their
For as long as I can remember I have always had an interest in the human body and how it functions. As a young girl, my mother noticed my interest in this and began to buy me human anatomy books. Since my mother worked in the medical field, she has inspired me and has encouraged me from the start. As I've gotten older, my love for the human anatomy has only grown. As a junior, I was able to take an anatomy and physiology class at Sanger High School. I was able to excel in that class with my prior knowledge and learned so much more. Along with anatomy, I took a Medical Terminology class. Both of these classes together greatly influenced me into choosing to major in Nursing. Taking the medical terminology class opened my eyes to see the many
Most people hate going to the doctor or seeing surgery’s on television; I love it, I love everything about the medical field. I always knew I couldn’t be a doctor or a surgeon but I knew I could go into the medical field for something. I didn’t want to be a nurse; everyone is becoming nurses today. I wanted to do something that you barley see people getting degrees in.
I was in the 2nd grade when I got my first glimpse of what being a doctor was like. A young physician from the local hospital came in and spoke to my class about how it was so rewarding working with medicine and helping people from all aspects of life. I figured that with my obsession with the Discovery Channel, my aptitude in science, and the inspirational speech I had just received, being a physician was something I wanted to do. I decided that becoming a physician would be my life goal and I would do everything possible to ensure that I had the best chances at accomplishing that goal. The gateway to making all of this happen: choosing the best college that would make me a well-rounded individual and a competitive medical school candidate.
In 2010, the Apple industry released the Apple iPad that paved the way for healthcare organizations, medical groups, hospitals, physicians and residents to incorporate information technology into patient interactions. Since then, tablets have served as an eye-opener to many healthcare organizations and clinicians (Eastwood, 2010). These institutions like Stanford medical center hospital in Palo Alto California, the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) medical center, Kaiser Permanente, the Washington hospital group among others have incorporated the use of tablet
