Mediterranean Harbor by Adam Pijnacker
Mediterranean Harbor is a painting of a ship on a harbor with various people gathering and packing packages. The painting was painted in the 1600s by Adam Pijnacker. Behind the ship is the ocean and the sky. The sky covers most of the top of the painting making it a main focal point in the painting. The middle of the sky is a clear blue while both the left and the rights sides are covered with brownish-grey clouds. The lower left side of the sky also has some orange colorage. This is because the sun is setting behind it, therefore, the time of day this painting is set in a sunset. In front of these clouds is a dark ship decorated with gold design. The ship’s size makes it a main focal point of the painting.

It shows that these people are more important than those around them, therefore we should pay attention to them. All three of them, however, are looking in different directions. One is looking back, perhaps at the town. In the right of the painting, another is looking down at a man who is tying up a package, pointing, and probably ordering him how to tie it. The other man is dressed in a salmon colored jacket. The painting is mostly made up of earth tone colors so this man stands out more than anyone else. He is also carrying a sword around his waist. His face is not shown, but by the position of his body it seems that he is looking out at either the ship or the horizon behind it. There are a couple people in front of him who seem to be fixing packages and tending to a large horse at the right of the painting. Their clothing is more earth tone which allows them to blend in more with the ground and the buildings. There are also people in the background of the painting who are also wearing mundane clothing and seem to be carrying packages. The front of the painting is full of things that are meant to be carried onto the ship. Although the things themselves are expensive, it makes the front of the painting seem cluttered and
I think the artist is able to communicate the bad condition of the ship and its crew is in. The mood of the work is scary and gloomy. The design and intensity of the waves, the changing weather, and the ships in the ocean seem to make the scene come alive. It really conveys a since of naturalism in the painting the way it depicts the environment around the ship.
Overall, it seems like there are many people in society now living in our present life. Their society is developing and improving a little bit because of people at the bottom with shackled hands whom are under the influence of the three figures who have a bigger dream and look at higher world. Each of them in the painting has an object on their hands. These seem to be important clues to interpret this painting. One is holding a book, second is holding a jar or flask and third one is holding handwriting, directing or measuring tools of an architect with compass. And there is a globe
The left side of the painting includes American icons such as Steve Irwin, Prince, Abraham Lincoln, and the “army” being led by George Washington. This could symbolize the American lifestyle that focuses and is represented mainly by society's take on who is important to the culture. This is often popular or influential celebrities, iconic presidents and/or leaders such as Abraham
It is a famous example of Renaissance art showing portraiture, realism, and some perspective. In this painting there are four distinct characters. Each has a different expression that shows how they are feeling. There is also more detail in the faces then in any other parts of the painting. Another technique it demonstrates is heightened realism. Whereas before the Renaissance the figures may have been painted simply and in only enough detail to get the general idea across, these figures are shown more realistically. Lastly there is the technique of perspective as shown in the background of the painting. The sea stretches out into the sky and the land in the background is shown how it would look if the viewer was actually
There is also a mirror placed on the table allowing the viewers to link with space beyond the frame. Also in the far back right of the painting you can see a young man talking to an elderly. The artist created an very old or old-fashioned look by using opposing colors, red and green. “The second half of the fifteenth century in northern Europe saw an expansion of genre
The centerpiece of the piece is obviously Mary, though she is on the right side of the painting. In one hand she holds an open bible, and she holds her other hand up in prayer while she is looking down with her eyes almost completely shut. She has a halo surrounding her head as gold rays shine down on her
During the bronze age the Flotilla Fresco was painted in a house in Thera Akrotiri. The house is located toward the west. The fresco is in room 5 of that house specifically. The Flotilla Fresco was a long mural that stretched across 3 walls. It was about 39 feet long. However, it was not a very tall mural. It only stood to be 17 inches high. Fresco is another meaning for “fresh”. This is because it is painted into still wet plaster. The paint is made from pigmented dust and water. Then once applied to the wall more water is added to push this mixture around. Using this method integrates the mural into the wall. It is estimated that the fresco was painted in about 1650 BC. A little bit before a volcano erupted and put parts of Thera in ashes. The fresco consists of a total of seven boats traveling between two land masses or islands. To the left there are lions chasing deer. The buildings on that side of the fresco are supposed to be Thera Akrotiri. In the water there are dolphins that swim along side the seven boats. The land to the right of the fresco seems to be some sort of festival or market.
The front of the painting shows three African American men in the time of the Harlem Renaissance. Each of the men are doing something different. Near the three men, are factories blowing out smoke. In the lower right hand corner, a man is being held back and dragged down by what seems to be a hand made from the smoke, showing that he is still doing work that he does not want to do. Below him are cotton fields, where slaves used to have to work and do hard labor with little to no pay. The man on the bottom left side is shown to also have the hand by him, watching his moves. He is in a pose where he is frustrated and seems to have given up on his dreams. Closer to the center, higher up, stands a third man, playing a saxophone. Music can symbolize freedom and awakening. Along the outer edges of the painting, the colors are dark browns, reds, and oranges. As the focus is drawn closer to the center, lighter colors such as yellow. Darkness, as an archetype, represents despair and the unknown while lightness shows hope, renewal and intelligence. The goals of success, exuberancy, and harmony showed hope and renewal in change in
The image shows a sailing ship, it could be an optimistic view of the painter expressing their particular direction of their goals and how we make choices in life. Or goals that are merely drifting away because it is difficult to get what we want out of life at times. Also sailing away could be a form of independence and freedom were we wish to break free from the constraints of everything we do in our daily lives. sailing on stormy waters depicts the difficulty of our choices and that things might be tough going forward. Or simply the strong desire to change life symbolizing the positive changes of our
The audience of the painting
The painter uses one point perspective, as shown the by direction of the walls and paintings on the wall. There are seven gentlemen in this painting. Some of them are musicians, playing the violin and watching the music sheets. Some pictures on the wall have the same meaning. The winter landscape, Christ, and trees symbolize the cycle of the life. Much light in this painting can show people the musician face clearly. The musician in orange seems like that he noticed the painter, and rest of them were just doing their own stuff. This detail makes the whole scene very
The painting The ship of Patience was created by an unknown 18th-century painter in Cuzco, Peru. The purpose of the painting seems to demonstrate the movement and expansion of Christianity overseas. The striking angelic figure in the sky shows a clear contrast with the frightening devils on the ground. By labeling each figure and person the painter was able to create an easy visual image for the natives to learn from. Without knowing anything about Christianity the painting clearly has Jesus Christ in the sole center person of the painting. There aren’t just holy, famous people on the boat with him, there are people with diseases and those that look like workers. It is demonstrating the open and loving beliefs and image of Christianity.
But even the men in the white tank tops with more flesh exposed, their hats are fine, and their body language is relaxed and do not portray that of a servant. I noticed the sail and row boats in the distance, the women surrounding the table; laughter, wine and company, and obvious friendship, but maybe also boredom. Was this a pre or post boating trip as the title hints? Was this painting staged, or maybe even a band and live music playing to the side? After closely looking over the portrait, what is most interesting to me is that contrary to the large number of people in the painting, no one’s gazes meet, showing no connections between the people, although most are smiling.
In the center of the painting is Plato on the left and Aristotle on the right. These two are showing the two parts within philosophy, Timaeus and Ethics. The other philosophers on the sides are ‘corresponding to the separate schools of thought within the two major divisions, each carrying on the philosophical arguments for which they were famous (Fleming, 304). Plato: (428-c. 347 BC) was a Greek philosopher and one of the most creative and influential thinkers in Western philosophy. Plato founded the Academy in Athens, the institution often described as the first European
The beautiful painting is a visual treat to anyone laying eyes on it. The blue sky the wavy water the sailboats all are ironic to any coastal shore. The moon on the distance is an indication that it’s early dusk or dawn. The sea looks windswept but calm and clear rather than stormy and angry. The ship is setting out on a long journey but the butterflies are an indication to a positive spin on departure so it’s probably intended for people who have had or will have firsthand experience with departure and those emotions.
