Personal Statement – Psychology Conversion MSC
My interest in psychology stems from my interest in criminal behaviour leading onto understanding behaviours and mental health. I studied psychology at A- Level along with Sociology and Medical Science BTEC. I chose to study Criminology as an undergraduate degree in order to understand the psychology behind the criminal mind. However, over the three years I found my interest being driven further into psychology and mental health as I was introduced to Criminology modules which overlapped with psychology, such as ‘The Psychology of Criminal behaviour’ in year 2 and ‘The sociology of mental health’ which was covered in year 3.
I want to study Psychology at postgraduate level with the intention to partake in further study in order to specialise in either clinical psychology, or child and

As well as this I have finished a Netflix series called ’13 reasons why’ which is an eye opening series which tackles many psychological issues that young people go through including sexual assault, depression, bullying and suicide. I have just begun to watch another Netflix series called ‘Don’t Call Me Crazy’ which shows teenagers and adolescents going through treatments for mental health issues including eating disorders, suicide, depression.
In contrast to fictional series, BBC panoramas programme on ‘Britain’s Mental Health Crisis’ touches on the decline in funding for mental health care as well as the global understanding of mental health. Ultimately, as a result of this there has been a shocking increase of ‘unexpected’ deaths of mental health patients. Consequently, I feel that there is an apparent need for enthusiastic, understanding individuals like myself to use their attributes to be involved professionally in psychological interventions, treatments and
The criminal psychologist occupies an important role in the current justice system not only in Australian society, but in contemporary society on a global scale. To understand what a criminal psychologist is, the principles of criminological psychology must be divided into individual definitions in order to frame the conventional interpretation of 'criminal psychology'. Criminals are often identified as senseless archetypes that commit crime usually through a disorderly offence. A criminal psychologist will usually look at the 'why' to determine the reason they are senseless. Although, most of the time it is due to the psychological aspects of a particular individual. This can vary from their upbringing to the use of harmful substances that affect their
I left behind my native country, being awfully discouraged by its methods of handling crimes and the people behind it- erroneous judgement sentences, lack of empathy for the mentally disturbed and failure to raise awareness and support for the silent sufferers. My interest for social and legal issues left me bitterly disappointed- it is not enough to acknowledge them; I want to contribute. A degree in Forensic Psychology would empower me to grow familiar with the challenges of the field and enable me to progress to a PhD level in Criminal
As a psychology graduate, with a BSc in Applied Psychology and MSc in Health Psychology, I’m currently seeking a role as ‘Assistant Psychologist’. It is for this reason I’m contacting you, as I believe my experience and education would make me the ideal candidate to work at Oakfield Psychological services in Altrincham. Studying psychology for four years has quipped me with the core skills needed to successfully conduct research and to apply psychological interventions. During my time as an undergraduate I focussed my research on personality dimensions and psychological well-being. This gave me an in depth understanding of the topic areas and provided me with report writing and data collection skills needed for further study.
Having been born in Zimbabwe where mental health is not taken seriously or as an important issue and being raised in the UK were I have come to gain some understanding and realization on the matter of mental health, I am greatly affected when I notice how far this country has come within its education and grasp of mental illness as well as social inclusion to those with mental health issues, as
Mental health and the criminal justice system have long been intertwined. Analyzing and understanding the links between these two subjects demands for a person to go in to depth in the fields of criminology, sociology, psychology, and psychiatry, because there are many points of view on whether or not a person’s criminal behavior is due to their mental health. Some believe that an unstable mental state of mind can highly influence a person’s decision of committing criminal actions. Others believe that mental health and crime are not related and that linking them together is a form of discrimination because it insinuates that those in our society that suffer from poor mental health are most likely to become a criminal due to their
My heart remains set on becoming a psychologist and I plan to accomplish that dream in the years to come. For now, I am taking an AP psychology class while I finish my senior year; I decided to get a taste for what the rest of my life will be like. Thankfully, this class has only cleared my vision for becoming a psychologist. I’ve learned that the term “psychology” itself is rather broad. There are many fields and subfields in psychology, not to mention there are psychiatrists and psychoanalysts as well. I’m not sure what field exactly I want to partake in, but I’m hoping that I will be able to make a choice when I attend CU Boulder in the
I now find myself wishing to further my passion for psychology while studying abroad in London. I will be taking a Psychology course that will transfer as six hours of upper level three hundred courses. The course I will be taking investigates how school and clinical service delivery operates in the U.K. with a focus on autism spectrum disorders and emotional and behavioral disorders. The University of Westminster is where I chose to study not only because of the diverse history that resonates among the city, but the prestige of the psychology department. At The University of Westminster, the undergrad and graduate psychology programs are all accredited by the British Psychological Society. This opportunity will provide a number of things that will assist in the development of a career in psychology. Studying during the summer will allow me to get ahead and take advanced classes at my home institution that pertain to behavioral psychology while focusing on children. It will be an opportunity to expand my knowledge on a subject I am passionate about learning from
A strong case can be made for investing in mental health, whether to enhance individual and world wellbeing, improve life span, or even to enable people living with mental illnesses to have a better quality of life. Mental health problems account for a quarter of all ill health yet they receive less than 6% of all health research funding, people with these health conditions usually experience poor access to help services and lower quality care than those with physical health problems. Addressing mental and physical health needs together would be more cost effective for the NHS and would benefit the increasing numbers of people dealing with untreated mental illness.
1). Criminology arose from the social scientific community over the year and has since come into its own discipline, it examines the entire process of lawmaking, law breaking, and law enforcing” (as cited in Akers, & Sellers, 2013). Criminology seeks to discover the depth of crime at both the micro and macro levels, from the individual’s natural biological and psychological characteristics, the nurturing of social and structural institutions, to policy, prevention and control.

To maintain my place in the Psychology Honours stream with a 5.5 Grade Point Average (GPA) for Level 2 and Level 3 psychology courses plus BEHL 2005 Introductory Research Methods; and an overall GPA of 5 at the end of 2018 (University of South Australia, 2016). This will enable me entry into the Psychology Honours Program in 2019. As I am uncertain which field of psychology I wish to enter, I believe this is an important goal to ensure my options remain open and my value of achievement is satiated.
My constant desire to know how people worked, why they worked that way and how to rectify illnesses people faced, has followed me throughout my maturity. A specific fascination of mine was how people could take medication and it would appear in a matter of time, be entirely fine. This led me to want to study the biology of disease and health, the chemistry of the manufacture of medicine, and the ability to describe and explain this knowledge. I believe this is essentially pharmacy.
My purpose for seeking to pursue a doctorate degree is to enhance my knowledge of theories, research methods and assessment as it relates to psychology. More specifically, I would like to fine tune my skill set of executing varying concepts and techniques derived from theoretical discourses applicable to my work as a Psychologist and in so doing, obtain credibility within the field and among colleagues. I also believe, like Abraham Maslow in his theory of Human motivation, in becoming a lifelong learner and achieving intellectual self-actualization. I felt like my esteem needs were met through completion of a Master’s degree and am now compelled to aspire towards higher study; thus doctoral pursuit. Through my journey in completing a Master’s degree in Counseling psychology, I acquired internship experience and continue to obtain a wealth of firsthand experience within the human services field from years of working with students with behavioral, emotional, and social problems.
While the broadness of a psychology course appeals to me, I am particularly interested in the cognitive and social areas of study - finding conciseness and perception the most fascinating.
I am a hardworking and dedicated student. I take pride in my work and show commitment at all times which I believe is important as it will help me achieve my goals and complete this course. I find learning new things exciting and I believe that I would be a good student in Criminology. Once I have completed this degree, I would like to complete a master’s degree in Criminology and criminal psychology or forensic psychology in order to increase my psychological knowledge in policing and
