Mentoring Relationships Mentorships are an effective way to develop positive characteristics in the people who need it most. In order to build a strong mentoring relationship, trust is essential. Without trust, it is almost impossible to get closer. The relationships between Will and Sean, in the movie Good Will Hunting directed by Gus Van Sant and Roger and Luella, in the short story “Thank you M’am” written by Langston Hughes are examples of the successful mentoring relationships. Both adults build trustworthy mentoring relationships with the young people in order to teach them a way to solve their own problems. The relationships between both characters are based on trust. In the movie, as a counsellor, Sean decides to build trust first. Instead of asking Will about his life, Sean reveals his story to Will. By telling Sean’s personal stories, Will slowly starts to show interests and eventually he becomes comfortable enough to tell his own story. It explains that to get other …show more content…
In the film, Sean helps Will to overcome his trauma. Near the end of counselling session, Sean tells Will that everything that happened to him while he was kid is not his fault. By accepting his painful past, he can be mature. Therefore, Sean wants Will to accept that he shouldn’t blame himself for his past. Without building trust, going into other’s painful past can’t be done. Similarly, Luella corrects Roger’s behavior in the short story. When Luella passes money to Roger, she teaches him not to “make the mistake of latching onto [her] pocketbook nor nobody else’s” (Hughes 2). By providing money to him, Luella wants him to feel guilty about it and she is addressing him not to make the same mistake again. Roger realizes how important to behave himself because he learns that his behavior can make him in trouble. They improve trust and they act like mother and son despite the fact they are not related by
Firstly, Will’s biggest role model is his father, but his father Greg does not demonstrate the right traits his son Will can model himself after, to become a better person as he grows up. After Will is chased out of his home by his drug-addicted brother Eric, Will states “I can’t wait until I'm bigger. I’d like to smear him against the wall. I’d smear him so bad.”(Robinson, 9). This negative thought is a result of Will’s father Greg being too violent around Will and creating an environment in which violence has become a normal thing. Often times Eric will do something like throw a party and this will aggravate Greg. Greg will often times resort to loud shouting and violent behaviors. Will has slowly adopted this violent behavior from the poor environment his father had created.
For this assignment I have chosen to focus on the film Good Will Hunting primarily because I have seen the movie prior to this course and I feel it is one of the best films I have gotten a chance to see. Will Hunting's profound genius was as much a burden as it was a gift. Initially seeing the film I enjoyed it but viewing the film in the scope of all that I have learned in this course made the viewing experience much more meaningful, as I now had a deeper understanding of Will's internal conficts, and how they directly effected his relationships, beliefs, and actions. The film is an excellent example of the issues involving interpersonal communication and how they play a part in either making or breaking our
The movie really relates the main idea of the story and that is what psychologists call intimacy. The two characters of Will and Sean are the central focus of the movie. Skylark, Chuckie and his friends help in the bigger scope but the relationship between the psychologist Sean and Will is what really counts in this tale.
Criminologist James Fox of Northeastern University predicts that murders committed by teens will skyrocket as the population of kids 10 and under is higher than population of 21st century teens by 20%. (Stephens) Mentoring is the act of helping out someone that isn't as knowledgeable or experienced in different areas. The goal is to make them leaders. (Patterson)
Mentors are people who provide support, strength, and inspiration. Many people have a mentor in their life that they aspire to be like, and seek out for guidance. Mentors play a big role in many lives, including Junior's from The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. Some of the biggest mentors for Junior are his parents, his Wellpinit teacher Mr. P and his Rearden basketball coach. If it weren't for these mentors inspiration and support, Junior wouldn't have taken some of the risks he does.
One way she shows this, is when she lets Roger in her home. It is important to notice that she wants to get to know the good Roger and not the one that tried to steal her pocketbook. Furthermore, she trusts Roger. This is significant because she just left her pocketbook sitting out not paying attention to it or Roger. This shows lots of trust. Another reason, she gave Roger food. I wonder if she did this because she wanted to help Roger become a better person. Briefly, everybody deserves a second chance to become a better person.
One thing I believe is a necessity in growing up is having a mentor. Having a mentor is, not only, beneficial for the mentee but also the mentor. Being a mentor is a learning experience for everyone participating, it helps people grow as a person and friendships are created when a bond if formed. Some people might think it's a waste of time for a child or that it'll never work out for a troubled delinquent but based on the research I've done, I have proven them wrong. Through-out this paper I will provide the pros and cons of mentoring and how they affect both mentor and mentee. To back up my proposal that mentoring is supporting, I will supply examples to answer the question: Is mentoring really important?
One of the key reasons why Sean was able to teach Will to open up was to by first opening up himself. Sean was not afraid to show his faults and allowed Will to challenge him on certain, albeit emotionally-charged, occasions. Instead of completely shunning the challenges as the other psychologists in the movie, Sean actually faced those statements and answered them sincerely whilst accepting that he was not perfect. In other words, he showed Will it was okay to be vulnerable to his emotions and to accept his imperfections. He was able to show Will that he cared, as with many other patients who suffered abuse as a child, Will seemed to have blamed himself for what happened until Sean gently, but firmly challenged Will to accept it. By the end of the plot, Will was ready to start taking risks and learning to live life more
The therapeutic relationship between Will and Sean started on a rocky road, but turned into a genuine and trusting relationship within the first couple of sessions. Although the therapy was a success, there were a few elements that walked a fine line of interrupting the therapeutic process. These factors included ethical concerns (inappropriate touch, verbal threat), countertransference, and bereavement (grieving loss of
In life, we all have a mentor who looks out for us. A figure that stands out and serves as a foundation for how our future ends up. Mentors can be our closest relatives, our best friends, or even people that we’ve never met, just those who stand out to us. Mentors teach us principles that they want us to follow and think is best. They mold us with their knowledge and shape us into people that they want us to be.
Good Will Hunting is an interesting story of a young genius orphan growing in a slums of South Boston with a group of best friends, written by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck and directed by Gus Van Sant. In this film, Will Hunting is the main character played by its father Matt Damon who is trying to himself identify his value in the world. He is not a normal teenager, he has a special ability that called the “photographic memory” so that he could remember and solve academic problems in a really quickly way. This film also tells us the journey of Willy as he is required to experience psychotherapy by Professor Gerald Lambeau (Stellan Skarsgard) unless he wants to serve the jail time due to his assault to a police officer. After several attempts for such treatment, all psychologists give up talking with him because of his stubborn characteristic until he meets Sean Maguire played by Robin Williams. Sean is the only person who is able to guide Willy on the way to finding himself and recognizing what is the most important to him in his own life. The writers and director collaborate very well in conveying the message to watchers through the storyline and some special relationships in it. There are two noticed relationships in Good Will Hunting which are between teacher and student and between man and woman.
Mentoring is a significant and powerful tool to help students like me in crucial need and help them succeed in life and school.
After a difficult start, Sean concludes that Will's defensiveness is the result of years of physical and emotional abuse, (as well as intense isolation), and that his hostile, sarcastic, and evasive behaviors are all defense mechanisms. The two work together to break through Will's considerable barriers, using a certain type of psychotherapy, and to get at the heart of the problem, dealing with Will's complex emotions. The two begin to relate to each other more, with Sean telling Will about his past and his happiness with his now
Good Will Hunting is a film which conveys many interlocking themes and messages to its viewers. One of these nicely woven themes is placing trust in the people we care about as well as people we have only recently become acquainted with. Another message, arguably more significant than the last is finding and pursuing the potential one has and bringing meaning into our lives in any form we choose. I believe the potential and success this film demonstrates is that success, growth, and meaning in a person’s life does not always have to come in the form of advancing in a career or social status but rather in the form of overcoming hardships and developing close reciprocating relationships.
Sean Maguire, evaluates Will constructively. Sean and Will share that they were both victims of
