In her article, Spencer-Oatey (2011) states the increasing focus on “the relational” in pragmatics. There are various terms used when analyzing the interpersonal relations and thus she first tries to evaluate this terminology confusion in a critical way. Because she believes that although researchers may disagree whether we should focus on the words of participants or analysts, metapragmatic emotion and (im)politeness comments should be analyzed, she reports a workplace project partnership study.
One of her aims in the study is to address the lack of what is meant by “relational” since there are not many studies concerning the similarities and differences between the variations about “the relational”. Another point that was stated which needs to be addressed was who of “the relations”, whys of it, and the basis of relational sensitivity.

Relational ethics places emphasis on the context of relationships in which they affect moral choices/actions. This is different from Kohlberg’s ethic of justice, which places importance decisions based on individuality (Burkhardt, Nathaniel, & Walton, 2013, pgs.110-111). In relational ethics, emotions expressed in the interactions between those involved are important because it allows for connections to be made among the participants (Pergert & Lützén, 2002, p.25; Pollard, 2015, p.364). The relationship is mutual, the participants are interdependent; they must interact with each other and be present in the moment of interaction. The main themes of relational ethics are engaged interaction, mutual respect, embodiment, uncertainty, vulnerability, freedom, choice and significance of the environment (Austin, 2006, p.136; Pollard, 2015, p.364; Wright & Brajtman, 2011, pgs.23-25). The four components that will be incorporated in this paper are engagement, mutual respect, embodiment, and environment. Engagement means one remains true to self while still being aware of others’ needs; sharing the moment together. Mutual respect is respecting others while also still keeping one’s own identity; this is how people become connected to each other. Embodiment is about bringing the mind and body together into one entity, instead of either or, it is both. I am originally from Puerto Rico, which is a country in which communication is an integral part of society. The cultural norm of the Puerto Rican culture is to speak up when necessary and communicate clearly if we want things to be done. At the same time, I believe that in order to produce results, the manner in which communicating takes place, is an extremely important component. My culture also showed me how the emotions used when communicating, such as the use of the hands and body language, will dictate the tone and flow of the communication. The literature suggests that the majority (as much as 76%) of the message we gibe to another person during conversations is carried by non-verbal or para-verbal communication. Thus, we must be very careful and strategic in our use o non-verbal communication (Van Acker, 1997).

In Affect - A basic Summary of approaches, Andrew Murphie puts forth thought on the concept of affect and how it directly correlates with the language. Affect is described as what occurs right before one becomes aware of how they are feeling, and thus turning that feeling into an emotion. That being true, affect is moment to moment and is constantly changing, for emotion is continually being altered in order for one to be fully present in every point in time. Affect comes and goes instantaneously, for at the instant when it comes, one makes an effort to put affect into words, turning the affect into a feeling or emotion and it is gone. Affect cannot be put into language, but it is always something that will be with one. That being said, one cannot describe one’s affect to another. Though, by trying to talk about one’s affect, one must speak about the instant that created said affect, and by expressing one’s thoughts about their moment to moment experience, one can try to evoke a similar experience in another’s mind.

The method of the study was that the participants were asked to respond to an online questionnaire on emotion display norms.
