Imperial Presidents
Midterm Essay
Donald John Trump. Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton. Two very distinct, ideologically diverse individuals. Both in the running to become the next President of the United States. The current president, Barack Obama, has served as a dramatic foil to his own predecessor George W Bush. But if elected, how will Clinton or Trump run the office? Political scientist Stephen Skowronek assesses the history and actions of the presidency in his book The Politics Presidents Make. He distinguishes four types of political identities, reconstructive, articulate, disjunctive, and preemptive. Based on their expressed ideologies and goals for the future, using Skowronek’s ideals, one can determine what kind of president each candidate could be.
When determining either candidate 's political identity, what first must be assessed is their comparison to President Barack Obama. Obama is a member of the Democratic party and has served two terms as president of the United States. During his first campaign trail in 2008, Obama gained popularity and won the election with his fair health insurance proposals, empathy for the middle class, and calm temperament, all of which his opponent, John Mccain, did not practice. His foundations were based on the belief that the United States can only work as a unit when everyone has the same opportunities in healthcare, education and employment. Obama was welcomed into presidential turmoil as he was faced with the
Other main issues were health care, energy and illegal immigrants. Obama stated numerous times during on the campaign trial that all Americans should have health care coverage they can afford. While McCain focused more on health insurance by compelling them to make prices within American’s means and make them feel protected with everyone receiving the same tax benefits. On energy, both candidates opposed drilling in the Alaska refuge but that is where the similarities end. McCain supporters during his rallies would chant, “drill, baby, drill” which gave much insight on his views on energy (Balz, 2009, 206). He supported the expansion of offshore drilling and the increased use of renewable sources such as solar, hydroelectric and wind. In principle, Obama said he didn’t oppose expansion of nuclear power but said it had to be done carefully and cost-effectively. The Republican platform had no
Republicans are red, Democrats are blue. I will not vote for Donald Trump, will you? Me personally, I do not think Donald Trump should be president. Donald Trump has done many outrageous things, and I would like to consider running for president as one of them. Many would consider this a publicity stunt. I say he just wants to make a fool of himself. There is a time and place to take things as a joke, this is not one of them. It is as if Trump does not care about his overall presentation, In majority situations it is okay not to care what others think, this is not that. This is presidency, you are in a race to run the country and here he is being racist, and being selfish. If he does care about one thing it is immigration. That is probably the only thing he cares for.
In this essay, I will compare and contrast the recent top two candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton as it relates to the presidential election, along with my opinion and views regarding what recently took place as of November 8th, 2016. It’s no secret that this election has been the craziest thus far. Not only for the first time has a female candidate made it this far in an election, but we also got to witness the shenanigans that took place leading up to the election, majority of which came from our very own, Donald Trump.
This year the presidential elections will take place at the beginning of November, and there are lots of people wondering how this is going to end. Some candidates for these presidential elections may not have been the best choice for their respective parties, but the one that really shouts, “I should not be here” is Mr. Donald Trump. His personality and actions are not the correct ones for a president because of his temper and comments against other cultures. On the other hand, we have Mrs. Clinton who is a more competent candidate; she has more experience on the field of politics than Mr. Trump who has none at all, which are the reasons why she is a better choice as a candidate and as president of the U.S.
George W Bush’s presidency can be associated with an infamous term that stood out from the State of the Union address, that term being ‘Axis of Evil’. In this context, Bush categorised the countries of Iran, Iraq and North Korea as being ‘evil’ states. This neoconservative comment left little doubt as to what Bush’s foreign policy towards these states was going be (Baxter and Akbarzadeh, 2008). This comment would then define George W Bush’s presidency, due to the controversy over this phrase and the results that it would have on US foreign policy as “rarely had such a rhetorical device had such devastating consequences” (Ansari, 2006:186). This paper will argue how the use of the word ‘evil’, and the categorisation of these ‘evil’ countries, had a large impact on US-Iran relations.
In November 2016, Donald Trump was elected president of the United States. With a campaign centered around otherization and nationalism, the atmosphere of this election, as well as the attitudes of the citizens of the country, bears similarities to 1930s Nazi Germany. While it may initially seem far-fetched to compare Donald Trump 's election to Adolf Hitler 's rise to power, both campaigns utilize nationalistic, racist sentiment and a fear of the "foreign other" to gain power within the country. Moreover, both campaigns utilize propaganda and the media in their own way to generate hatred and fear to further their own goals. I will argue that these tactics used by Donald Trump has inspired numerous acts of hatred, and that any person who is not a white male has a reason to fear Trump 's presidency.
America was now concerned with the economy. In his first term he had faced a recession where the government was forced to bail out automakers and banks. He was also well known for pushing the affordable care act ("Barack Obama Biography").The Democrats ad campaign consisted of painting Romney as an elite, disconnected from the needs of most Americans. In a time of high unemployment they were running ads like “The Cheaters” saying Romney invested in companies that sent jobs overseas(”2012 Obama VS. Romney”).
Political candidates often run for the same position and have a common goal to become President. The way in which they approach their Presidency may differ. That is the case for two of the Democratic Candidates of the 2016 Election, Bernie Sanders and Hilary Clinton. Both Candidates have similar views on Women’s rights, yet they differ on issues of Education cost, foreign policy, etc.
When most people think of Donald Trump, and Bernie Sanders, there are few, if any similarities, that generally initially come to mind. Mr. Trump is a recognized figure throughout the world, where far fewer people were even aware of Mr. Sanders, until quite recently. However, in this early stage of our political season, both men have put together and enjoyed far more support, than most of us probably believed would be the case, just a very short time ago. Personality-wise, the two individuals are miles apart; Mr. Trump being far more brash, edgy, confrontational and showy, while Mr. Sanders appears far more reserved, content and issues-oriented, etc. One man seems to eagerly belittle and attack his opponents, while the other avoids personal
Downgrading. That is this election in a nutshell. I have not felt more annoyed with politics and media outlets than ever before, since Donald Trump announced his candidacy on June 16, 2015 ,with those empty four words "Make America Great Again" , we learned that Trump is nothing, but a whining child that erupts on any ounce of criticism from either side. Why did he gain the support of voters with such minuet substance, like building a wall or banning all Muslims? I believe voters fell into the same trap as Bernie supporters , by appealing to people with on the spot ideas without any real consideration. The validity of free college is equivalent to building a wall paid for by Mexico, both are incompatible in the real world.
President Donald Trump announced an extremely important policy that he wanted to an enact… through the popular social media site called Twitter. A summarization of what his tweet means is as follows; Transgender individuals are a disruption to the victory of the military. This message provoked outrage and, consequently, little approval nationwide. In order to formulate his message, President Donald Trump used the tool of rhetorical appeals. As stated by Doug Downs, Aristotle observed that people usually made three kinds of appeals: to logic, to emotion, and to a rhetor’s credibility (Downs 469). Emotional appeals, also called pathos, toy with a reader’s feelings, through the use of manipulative claims, in order to convince the reader of something
In Detroit, there are 100-plus Iraqi immigrants, many Christians, who came to the U.S. seeking asylum from brutal persecution, something like many American’s ancestors. After decades living in the U.S. Iraqi Chaldean Christians, indigenous Iraqis, are being rounded up and being sent back to Iraq. During the campaign trail, Trump vowed to help persecuted Christians in the Middle East, but in exchange of removing the travel ban the U.S. agreed to return Iraqi nationals. However, Judge Goldsmith of Detroit granted a preliminary injunction request as many immigrants will face physical harm if they returned. Immigration, the foundation of American society for centuries, will be ruined by President
In conclusion, Donald Trump is both charismatic and holds himself in high esteem, he is eager to explain how exceptionally well he did in the election and does this in great length in his speeches. He even has a framed map of the 2016 election results displayed in the White House (Lozada, 2017). In his recent speech in Poland, Trump made reference to the ‘West’ ten times. Beinart (2017) argues that in this context the West is not a geographical term, but a racial and religious one. Trump is unlike his predecessors, who acknowledged that democracy and capitalism were not Western, but the universal aspiration of humankind. Previous leaders of the US discussed globalisation as a process where America improved the world. However, Trump describes globalisation as a process by which the world cheats, weakens and threatens America. His words, ‘The fundamental question of our time is whether the West has the will to survive’ (Trump, 2017), only makes sense if non-white, non-Christians are seen as invaders. Thus, this implies that anyone in America who is non-white and non-Christian is a threat. Trump, by describing that being Western is the essence to the US’s identity, is defining the US to be in opposition to many of its own people.
Donald’s Trump’s victory in the 2016 election is very complex. The political mishaps that have occurred since JFK’s presidency reshaped the American psyche of who the president should be. This chain of dissatisfaction with the federal government led the American people to hope for a president who is honest, free of corruption, and supportive of the middle class. Trump recognized the American need for a new kind of president and took on a persona that perfectly exemplified this. The Trump Mythology is the belief that Donald Trump is a transparent, honest politician; however, this is only part of the equation. Belief in the Trump Mythology contributed to his victory, but it is also important to acknowledge the respective roles of demographics, voter turnout, and Hillary Clinton’s flaws. An interesting difference between the Kennedy Mythology and the Trump Mythology that is worth noting is the role of the media. Throughout the Kennedy Era, popular media fed the people’s fascination of Kennedy’s Camelot, perpetuating the mythology. Donald Trump, however, was largely hated by popular culture. American media ultimately discounted Donald Trump as a viable contender for the presidency.
Will Donald Trump fulfill America’s request and actually “make America great again”? When friends of mine who are Trump supporters inform me that they support him, I don’t understand the reasons why they picture him as our future president of the united states. Donald Trump has never been an elected official. He has never been elected into an office of any kind. He’s never had to broker political compromise or gave any political speeches prior to him running for president. With no experience in politics at all, why would people think he’d make a good president? Sure, Donald Trump is a barefaced self-promoter and experienced businessman. But people don’t realize all of the mistakes he has made as a businessman. Washington, D.C., is not a type of Wall Street or anything for him to lose money or make some reckless decisions that would put our country into a deeper hole that we are already into, and also getting multiple things done within the nation’s capital takes more than a huge personality and a strong will. If Donald Trump is elected to be our president, he’ll have to quickly learn how to deal with his Democratic associates in the House of Representatives and Senate. He’ll also have to get used to the pace of government because there are moments when things can accelerate pretty quickly and also where things can move extremely slow at times. He’ll also have to get used to giving speeches on topics he may not be interested in, especially when it comes to conversations
