Industries around the world are very different but also alike in so many ways. The military is a great industry to look at for things like team work, because the health care industries can learn how to improve their quality of care and customer (patient) satisfaction. Having that extra money can benefit the companies when they focus on improving team work alone. Lessons are learned all around.

In a 2015 article, “Is U.S. military becoming outdated?” written by Stuart Bradin, Keenan Yoho, and Meaghan Keeler-Pettigrew, the authors argued that despite the U.S. military maintaining a position of global dominance “without peer” during conventional operations, it is not the ideal force against current and future threats. The authors claim that there are several negative factors arising due to the past sixteen years of war against several state and non-state elements, inferior cultural differences of government bureaucracy compared to commercial firms, and a misallocation of defense spending that leaves the US military waging war inefficiently while simultaneously losing technological dominance against current and future threats.

In an effort to provide protection for our international interest our political leadership point of view is to show militaristic prowess. Mr. Bacevich has mentioned several examples regarding excessive spending within the Department of Defense (DOD) that dwarfs those of America’s closest allies. Also noted, Mr. Bacevich explained that the Navy maintains several large attack aircraft carriers; however, in the battle fleets of the world, there is no ship even comparable to a Nimitz-class carrier. The question is “why do we continue to move away from the general principle to maintain the minimum force required.” I think because we are living in a capitalist society the power of money is at the forefront. The DOD is an industrial military conglomerate.

By slow stages, large and sustained military expenditures produced an enduring Military-Industrial Complex with the self-serving consequences suggested by the World War II economy and, more seriously, with the potential for perpetuating the forces of modern warfare which had provided for the initial growth of such a complex (90).

The B-2 Bomber for example, having parts made in all 50 states, is a strategic move. Nobody is going to stop the production of that plane; no congressman/woman is going to allow that. Simple positions that were originally held by people in the service sector, such as peeling potatoes and doing laundry, are now handled by contractors. For every soldier out fighting with a gun, there are hundreds of people working to provide equipment. Danielle I aggree with your statement. I would like to add an out of box suggestion though. In my Navy career I notice that alot of military bases are in areas that are underprivileged. So furthermore the goverment is helping the local economy by providing a base which provides jobs to the local economy. Usually bases have local businesses that are contractors for that base. As a example local maintance repairs such as plumbing, roofing, and general upkeep for the buildings on the base.

The self-interests is the absence of enterprise mind-set and behavior. Instead of thinking about the military as a single entity and what is the best for whole military, military sub-organizations are rather focused on their own interests. They are reluctant to take holistic view of objectives and processes and, consequently, stick to “rice bowls” and “stovepipes.” The second obstacle to military cost-conscious culture is its orientation toward effectiveness rather than efficiency. Most Military Soldiers believe that when they get out of the Military and start a business that there is only one type of business they can own. They also believe that they will not have any problems in achieving their own business goals and will have stability in that business. This is why they have to set long and short term goals. Look at privately owned business vs. government owned business and the pros and cons of making your choice of business. When making that choice of either business type education level, wages, benefits, and total compensation are an affecting factor to a positive or negative outcome.

Considering that the military’s logistical structure hasn’t had a major improvement in over 60 years, the idea of streamlining and consolidating systems would be a welcome and much needed change. I currently work in the ammunition field for the U.S. Army and have done so for the past 18 years. The changes that the Marines are beginning to implement will help to free up resources and cut funds that could be used for other projects.
