It all started with a smell. Milton Hershey was in Chicago, at the Columbian Exposition. (It’s pretty a candy showing) All across the world people with candy were there to see if the Americans would buy their candy or inventions. As soon as he entered the grand exhibition hall, he was stuck by a smell that filled the air like a heavenly breeze. At last he found it, in the back corner of the hall, there were men from Germany making chocolate. Historians don’t even know who first discovered the almost magical seeds inside a cacao fruit. In 400 B.C. Indians found the seeds and then turned it into a drink. Mayan Indians were drinking a chocolate beverage, cacao powder mixed with water and spices. The drink spread from them to Europe then the

The founder of Hershey Chocolate, Milton Hershey, had a long journey to creating some of the most famous candy today. From a young age he lived in poverty and his parents constantly fought due to differences, which would always have an impact on Milton’s life. He started out in the business struggling, first with his caramel business going under and the unhelpful advice of his father that only led to Milton making more mistakes. Once Milton made it big he went on to do amazing things and dedicated a big part of his life to helping other people and focusing on the well-being of his employees. The Hershey Company is the leading North American manufacturer of quality chocolate, non-chocolate confectionery, and chocolate-related grocery products. The company is also a leader in the gum and mint manufacturer category as well. The transportation cost of chocolate was high and small mom and pop stores commonly supplied chocolate made locally. Today you would be hard-pressed to find local chocolate in the United States, with the shelves dominated by four major brands. The
They didn’t make M&Ms or Snickers bars, nor did they add milk or sugar to make the cacao taste sweeter. Chocolate was clearly a favorite of Maya royals and priests, commoners likely enjoyed the drink on at least some occasions, as well. “In the classic period, “chocolate drinks were known to be part of such banquets among the nobility” (Foster, 2005, p. 341). There have been many artifacts found that are covered with paintings of people together preparing and drinking cacao. Some items were discovered in the tombs of deceased rulers that were known to be used in cacao consumption. The Maya enjoyed chocolate so much that they grew the trees in their gardens closer to home so they didn’t have to travel out into the forests to gather the cacao beans. Maya groups living in the Yucatán, where the climate wouldn't support a tropical rainforest, apparently found ways to grow some cacao trees. Foreign goods enabled rulers to solidify their relationships with other powerful members of society through gifts such as chocolate beverages because they were a symbol of privilege (Foster, 2005, p.
For over one hundred years, there has been only one company that has been on top of the candy industry in North America; Hershey. With over 14,000 employees, serving 70 countries worldwide and net sales of $6.6 billon, Hershey has come out on top. The Hershey company began in 1894 by Milton Hershey. The company has over 8 factories, but their main headquarters resides in Pennsylvania. The beloved Hershey milk chocolate bar has been a favorite by many, but would it still be if more people knew how it came to be that? One of chocolates main ingredients is cocoa. Cocoa, or cocoa beans come from tropical areas around the world, but is mostly found on the Ivory Coast in West Africa. Hershey, along with Mars and Nestle are the three major companies that buy their cocoa from West Africa, but with further investigation, it has been known that over 4,400 children work on those cocoa farms that they buy from.
Chocolate is a candy containing lots to almost no sugar. It is loved across the whole world and Americans buy an average of 2.8 billion pounds of chocolate a year. So chocolate is very famous, but how is it made. Chocolate was originated from central America. It is made from a cacao bean. Chocolate goes through a long process, it starts with picking a cacao bean from a tree which are usually found in humid tropical areas. The cacao bean is picked then taken to a factory where it is roasted in hot ovens. The point of putting a cacao bean in an oven is to dry and darken the bean. I know this because in the article “How is Chocolate Made? From Bean to Bar” it states, “ The heat brings out more flavor and aroma, and it dries and darkens the beans.”
Born into a poor, lower-class family, Milton S. Hershey dropped out of school before reaching the fourth grade. He developed an interest in becoming a confectioner. He believed there would be great demand for affordable, mass-produced chocolate, and thus he built the Hershey Chocolate Company. Hershey’s is now the largest producer of quality chocolates in North America and a global leader in chocolate and sugar confectionery. Although he enjoyed making money, Milton S. Hershey was intent on using his vast fortune for philanthropic purposes. He decided to surround his enterprise with a model town and personally financed the building of roads, utilities,

From the standpoint of the original Hershey milk chocolate bar, Milton Hershey is the original creator of developing an efficient chocolate manufacturing process during the late 1800s. Milton Hershey developed a method to produce chocolate that tasted delicious, could be created in bulk, and sold to consumers at competitively affordable price. This process begins with obtaining ingredients used to create a chocolate base. Though Hershey’s main factory is in Pennsylvania, the cacao bean is the main ingredient used that needs to be imported outside of the United States. The cacao beans from cacao trees only thrive in tropical climates. These trees grow in tropical rain forests of Brazil and Indonesia. Once the trees produce a significant amount of cacao beans, Hershey hires farmers to pick the cacao beans off of trees. When
The word “cacao” and the first data concerning these valuable beans were derived by Europeans who came to the new World from the Maya of the Yucatan Peninsula who made chocolate drinks to their nobility and presented them in beautiful vessels to their rulers. These people were probably the first in human history to turn cacao beans into chocolate. However, the word “cacao” is believed to be much older and originate from “kakwa”, the word of the Olmecs, the earliest of civilizations that existed in the Americas (Coe et al., 457). The old inhabitants of South America realizing the delicious qualities of the cacao fruit tree domesticated it and later spread it from the northwestern part of the Amazon basin along the trade routes. The key event was the invention of converting cacao tree seeds into chocolate that is believed to have taken place around 1800 BC. Maya also benefited from getting cacao as a
In 1894, the Hershey Chocolate Company began in Lancaster, Pennsylvania when Milton Hershey decided to begin producing chocolate coating for his caramels. In 1900, Hershey expanded their business by producing more goods. Once Hershey began mass production, they were able to minimize production costs and make high-quality milk chocolate. After this new production model was established, Hershey began to expand its facilities throughout the northeastern United States. They also increased their supply chain efficiency by building a new facility in close proximity to ports and dairy farms that supply Hershey with its raw materials.
