Minimize Gang Violence

Gang violence is a serious problem in the United States. According to Gordon Witkin “Last September, after rival gang members taunted each other at a crowded downtown bus stop, a 16-year-old fired a 9-mm pistol, wounding two other teens and a 61-year-old man.” (Witkin). This is just one example of gang violence and its effect on young people. Multiple approaches need to be used to keep this problem from happening. One way to help minimize gang violence is to increase the number and impact of school counselors. According to Peter Wendel, “School counselors in particular can act as a catalyst for systemic change," he said. "They can be the spark to get collaborative efforts going, bringing together the relevant entities within the community." …show more content…

According to Wendel, “One of the first orders of business is to give these children a full physical examination. In some of the worst cases, the children are referred to neurologists. Others are discovered to be having difficulty in school because of vision problems. And still others are identified as having been born to drug- or alcohol-addicted mothers.” (Wendel). Ideinfying these problems will allow schools to intervene on behalf of their students in hope of making them more successful in school. Catching these problems early may help keep kids in school and out of gangs. Another approach to minimize teen gang violence is to keep kids involved in school. Wendel states that, "If kids are not involved in school, they tend to find other activities, like gang involvement, to fill their time" (Wendel). Keeping kids involved in school can include a variety of programs. These can include, sporting activities such as baseball basketball and swimming. They can also include student clubs such as, Book club, chess club and student council. They can even be activities in the arts.
