The meaning of a role model by dictionary definition is a person whose behavior, example, or success is or can be emulated by others, especially by younger people. Throughout New Zealand sporting history there has been a large collection of role models setting examples both positively and negatively. Sport has always played a vital role in defining New Zealand as a nation, the climate and geography of New Zealand has made the country a natural arena for sport. New Zealand has had memorable sport role model figures dating back to Sir Edmund Hillary in 29th of May 1953 that was one of the first climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest. There was also Sir John George who is a former middle distance runner from New Zealand. Walker was the first person to run the mile in under 3:50. He won the Olympic Games 1500m in Montreal in 1976. These two men set the pace for New Zealand in our thriving sporting culture.
New Zealand is commonly remembered in the sporting world from their achievements in rugby in which they are the current world champions. The New Zealand all blacks won the rugby world cup in 1987 and 2011 but have also played a total of 43 matches in the seven Rugby World Cup tournaments. They were the only team who had made it to all the semi-finals at the world cup between 1987 and 2003. The social issue that will be addressing in this business proposal is Child Poverty. The reason why child poverty is now concerning is because of its negative impact on children’s living conditions. It has now become a significant social issues in New Zealand.
There are many similarities and differences between the United States (U.S.) and New Zealand that make them unique. The U.S. has people from all around the world Including people from New Zealand. There is an abundance of jobs and opportunities for people who live there. They have freedom and liberty. This gives them rights that citizens of many other countries don’t have. They also have the right to vote for laws as well as political figures they want in office. Although the U.S. has some amazing qualities, New Zealand has many of the same Ideals, as well as several differences, but regardless both countries are amazing places.
A person to look up to and follow their example is the definition of role model. Lupe, from the Marble Champ, by Gary Soto is a role model. Lupe is a role model because Lupe is a good sport when she is playing marbles, Lupe is hardworking when practicing for marbles, and above all Lupe is smart and strategic. Lupe is a role model because she is a hard worker, determined, and intelligent. More people should try to be like Lupe. With role models around, the world becomes a better place.
The idea of a hero has always been something of great importance to my upbringing. Although my biggest role models are my parents, they always stressed the idea of having positive role models and people to emulate and look up too, whether it be a coach who shows me the importance of leadership and team building, or a teacher who shows me the importance of remaining focused and the importance of education. How would you define the importance of a role model? The importance of role models is seen many times in the book “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian Man” by Sherman Alexie. This story is based on Arnold Spirit Jr also known as Junior, a boy who lived on the reservation in Wellpinit, WA, and how people in his life had affected him and his traits. Some role models that had affected, motivated and helped Junior were Penelope, Grandma Spirit, and Mr. Spirit Sr.
My greatest role would probably be the legendary tennis player Andre Agassi. I understand the difficulty in having a personal connection with someone who is at an exceedingly high level of fame and distance. However open reading his auto-biography and following his tennis career, I realize that Agassi has done a lot for me and my growth as a human being than most people I know. True role models are those who possess the qualities that we would like to have. Role models are those who have affected us in ways that influence us to be better people. They are people who others imitate, emulate or look to for guidance. There are good role models who inspire greatness in others and bad role models who are bad influences. There are even anti-role models, pegged by the media as "bad girls" or "bad boys" who serve as good examples of what not to do if you want to become a successful, respected person. With the majority of my time spent as an athlete throughout high school and college, I believe athletes should pose as role models.
The idea that when growing up as a child, we lose some illusion in order to obtain new ones tie in with the understanding that children’s minds are not matured enough to adequately understand the meaning of a true role model. Every person is looking for something different when searching for the best role model for them. But who makes a good model? The celebrities that kids are looking up to are adults that partake in adult and illegal behavior such as partying, drinking, and drugs that lead into violence.
