As the lights dimmed before the start of Monster House, my daughter and I sat down with a bag of popcorn and our 3-D glasses on. As the movie started I saw her reaching out toward the screen to try to touch the images that looked like they were coming right at you. She seemed enthralled, while I had a smile on my face. This made me ponder as to the future of films and the development of new technological advances as the movie business moves toward the future. Movie production is a costly process which only increases in costs as “better” or newer technology is used, famous directors are hired, and actors with name recognition are cast. Lewis, (2013), stated, “One may be prompted to ask why anyone would go to a theater unless he or she were going to see something that couldn’t be seen at home” (p. 402). He was referring to the idea that the film industry is facing increasing pressure to present a product that is newer, better, and more “cutting edge” than in the years past in order to attract larger audiences. Larger studios may market to their intended audiences through questionnaires and focus groups in order to create a better film preview to entice wider audience, while independent studios may be able to present their movies at film festivals and through the media (Lewis, 2013). Larger studios may distribute or release a movie nationally, or exclusively to gauge public response, while the independent studio may not have such luxury and may have to release the film locally and selectively around the country in the hope of gaining traction through word of mouth to be able to afford a wider release (Lewis,
