Morals and Themes Learned From an Important Lesson: The Bible
Many books, movies, quotes and ideas have been crafted and based off of the stories and themes of The Bible. The parables as shown in The Bible As/In Literature have many characters that other authors and artists base their work off of as it guides some audiences to believe where these ideas and morals have come from. One of these art forms being the Dreamworks animated movie, The Prince of Egypt. It tells the Biblical story of Moses and how he saved the Israelites from the hard, grueling slave work the Egyptians forced through them, once God gave him the task to. The movie The Prince of Egypt and the parables from The Bible As/In Literature share many themes that connect the stories together and the traits shown through their characters. Some major themes that are used between the two are leadership, determination and faith. One major theme in The Prince of Egypt that relates to the BAIL story of Joseph is determination. The story of Joseph is about Jacob’s son Joseph and how his brothers despised him. Joseph always had a dream that one day his brothers would be looking up to him, and that he was someone very important. His brothers were very angry and they sent him to Egypt and took his tunic and dipped it in goat’s blood. Joseph got to Egypt and met the Pharaoh, and answered his dream and became Pharaoh’s right hand man. One place where we see determination from Joseph is when he told his brothers and father
The film Prince of Egypt is unreliable when compared to the Biblical account of the Exodus. The 1998 DreamWorks retelling of the testimony of the Exodus remodels the story of Moses. It does this by bringing along the Major theme of audience relation and appeal, those of which differ from the Bible's theme of God is mighty and can do all things. Nonetheless examples of the Motion picture’s theme are found in the Settings, Characters & Storyline changes. These changes lower the films credibility when compared to the Bible.
Thomas Jefferson called him “truly the man of the Revolution” and he will always be remembered in American history for his important contributions to the American Revolution. This man is Samuel Adams, “the Father of the American Revolution.” A graduate from Harvard University, Samuel Adams failed in business before becoming a politician. Although, he was a popular leader in America, many controversies surrounded him. He was one of the staunch supporters of 'Republicanism ' in America. The system of 'committee of correspondence ', formed by Samuel Adams and his associates played an important role in uniting like-minded Americans from all the thirteen colonies. He also
The story of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is integral to the overall narrative of the Israelites’ descent into Egypt. It also tells us that anyone can make his or her dreams come true. His progression from dream interpreting shepherd to minister of Egypt is one of the most elaborate stories in the Bible, the Book of Genesis. Joseph was born in a family of 12 boys and Joseph was his father’s favorite. Jacob wanted to show everyone how much he loved Joseph and decided to give him coat of many colors. The coat of colors was a prestige gift in Canaan, because it was very expensive back then. Joseph had a dream of 11 sheaves of corn that turned and bowed down to a golden sheaf of corn another dream that was about the sun, moon, and sky with eleven stars bowing down before a bright golden star. He knew that someday he was meant for more things to come that are powerful in his life. This was God’s way to show him that he will be great someday and be a ruler. With the combination of knowing Joseph is Jacob’s favorite son and Joseph’s dreams of being one that he may be a ruler of some kind, the 11 brothers become very jealous. One day, they decided that they wanted to kill him, but before they get the chance, they came across a couple of Ishmaelite’s on their way to Egypt. They decided to sell Joseph as a slave. As Joseph is taken to Egypt, his brothers return home, told their father that Joseph is dead; they brought back his coat stained with goat blood
In conclusion, the movie, The Prince of Egypt, is a good introductory movie for someone who does not have a full understanding of the story of Moses. It provides the basic story line for Moses’ life although it does take liberties with some aspects of the story. The biblical story of Moses, found in Exodus, will give the viewer and reader a far better understanding of the life of Moses and the important role that he would play in the lives of the Hebrew people.
While artistic and historical license has been taken, the setting is an element of the movie that is true to the essence of the Bible, faithfully representing the dry and barren landscape of Egypt, while the impression of it’s geography has been altered. Although the Dreamworks animation, ‘The Prince of Egypt’ depicts the setting accurately, the animators of the film have changed certain aspects of the movie to create interest and relatability. The first difference in the setting of the book of Exodus and the film ‘The Prince of Egypt’ is the misrepresentation of the Nile River. According to the story of Exodus, the biblical account of Moses implies that he floated across the Nile river safely. However, the film represents the Nile as a busy and dangerous trade route, filled with large boats and potentially harmful predators. Therefore, by placing Moses in a dangerous river, it emphasises the need for Moses to be saved from Pharaoh's wrath; while for the viewer, it creates a sense of tension and suspense. Also, another setting that was altered when compared to the biblical account of Moses was that of the Pyramids and Sphinx. The movie claims that the Pyramids and the Sphinx were positioned near the palace; however, according to historical evidence, these Egyptian statues are located in Giza. In contrast to the movie, the Bible states these Egyptian statues were found in Thebes. With this change made, the viewers can recall a popular feature associated with the traditional
Joseph began his life as the favorite son of Jacob who tended to the flocks as a shepherd.3 These humble beginnings foreshadow how one day Joseph will tend to the Seed of the Woman during times of famine in the land by giving food to this eleven brothers. Jacob, who was the son of Isaac, had eleven other sons who were jealous of the special attention that Joseph received. In fact, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.4 Joseph had a dream that predicted that Joseph would one day reign over his older brothers. This upset his brothers and they tricked Joseph by selling him into slavery. Joseph was then taken to Egypt where he was sold to Potiphar and became a servant in
The film ‘The Prince of Egypt’ is inaccurate when compared to the story of Exodus. The film was created in 1998 by DreamWorks Pictures and retells the story of Moses. The directors clearly changed the film, so the audience can infer information and excite the audience. The main mishaps are in the setting, the characters and the storyline. Clearly, this account of the story of Moses, is inaccurate in comparison to the biblical account of Exodus.
Today, all around the world people express their different and unique cultures everyday. If we were to go halfway around the world things that would seem weird to us would be normal to them. What makes people so quick to judge others when they have different ways of life than us? In the novel The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver an American family travels from Georgia to the Congo, and they have one goal in mind. Their goal is to spread the word of God, their baptist beliefs, and American values to the locals. However, the family fails to see that the Congolese people are not in need of a change of faith and lifestyle. The family is thrown into a difficult lifestyle in the Congo with many challenging obstacles that change some of the family members views and values. With the exception of the father, Nathan. In The Poisonwood Bible the values and culture of both the American family and the Congolese people help shape the theme of America’s over reach in third world countries and the destruction it creates.
There are several similarities and differences between the Disney’s film “The Prince of Egypt”, produced by Penney Finkelman Cox and Sandra Rabins and the story represented in the Pentateuch. The narrative of the overall story, is to depict the hardship that the people of Egypt endured. Although the story of the movie has been modified to fit a younger audience, it also clarifies the story well. I believe one of the most important scenes is when Moses is in a basket making his way through the river, although this scene could be found in both the film and the bible, they are illustrated differently. The film created a vigorous journey, showing crocodiles and extreme waves that baby Moses has to face. The story in the Bible was not that dramatic,
After Joseph was sold into slavery, he earned the respect of his owner, Potiphar and was given great privileges, but Potiphar’s wife betrayed him and he was thrown into prison. Joseph earned the respect of the prison guards, and became a leader of the prisoners. Even though he was forgotten about in prison for 20 years, he kept to his faith and true to his
Pharaoh elevated Joseph above almost everyone in Egypt because Pharaoh saw that God was with Joseph and all he did, God made successful. Because of this, Pharaoh put Joseph in charge of his house, the people of Egypt, and all the land. One day, Pharaoh’s wife asked Joseph to lie with her and Joseph replied, “…he has held back nothing from me except you, as you are his wife, and how could I do this great evil and give offense to God?” (The Norton Anthology World Literature, pg. 182) Although Pharaoh’s wife did not succeed in demanding that Joseph lie with her, she called out to everyone in the house and said, “He came into me to lie with me and I called out in a loud voice…he left his garment by me and fled and went out.”
Joseph was the first born child of Rachel and because he was born to Jacob in his old age, Jacob loved Joseph more than his other sons and made Joseph a richly ornamented robe, therefore Joseph’s brothers hated him and could not speak a kind word to him. Joseph also had dreams that indicated that he would reign over his brothers and this caused more hatred toward him. His brothers were jealous of the love that he received from their father and because of his dreams. Consequently, Joseph’s brothers plotted to kill him but instead they sold him to some Ishmaelites that were passing through to Egypt.
The Prince of Egypt accurately depicts the Bible story of Exodus, although there are some scenes that were portrayed inaccurately. The Prince of Egypt was released in 1998 by DreamWorks Pictures, it is about the book of Exodus in the Bible, in which Moses goes back to Egypt to release his people, the Hebrews from the Egyptians. The first aspect analysed was the plot, it was mostly accurate although there were many scenes that were changed or added to keep the audience’s attention. The second aspect is the setting which was very accurate when compared to the Bible. The last aspect are the characters, when compared to the Bible it was mainly accurate, with a few changes. Therefore, The Prince of Egypt has been accurately depicted with some inaccurate aspects.
The Bible does provide a morality for everyone because it is the word of the holy, good, God. Namely, since He is perfectly and entirely good, all that derives from, including His word, is good. Therefore, anyone who diligently and properly reads the Bible will have a correct understanding of morality. Ultimately, by understanding God's word, humanity recognizes that it is morally wrong. Paul wrote, "all have sinned" (Romans 3:23). No one has followed God's morality. The manifestation of the sinfulness of humanity is evident, and it seems that you could sadly testify of humanity's sinful nature since you have had encountered people who exercised their sinful nature. In spite of humanity's sins, the Bible teaches that God made redemption and
I will talk about the "Moralized Bible" and how its illumination was used to convey complex theological idea. Any people any randomly selected scriptures were selected and matched with allegories that spread in the society for lots of years or the moral explanations that taught by the religious book. Such as Christian bible which is all written by the people. It used vocabulary and images to express its meaning, which is in the stacked medal and The design is also similar to stained glass. Every single page has two vertical lines of painted scenes. And it all filled out with the mosaic repeating patterns. Adjacent to each medallion is a text excerpt, a summary of a passage of the passage or a concise contemporary interpretation or a fable.
