Movie Review : ' I Watched The Film Seven Pounds '

For this assignment I have chosen to focus on the film Good Will Hunting primarily because I have seen the movie prior to this course and I feel it is one of the best films I have gotten a chance to see. Will Hunting's profound genius was as much a burden as it was a gift. Initially seeing the film I enjoyed it but viewing the film in the scope of all that I have learned in this course made the viewing experience much more meaningful, as I now had a deeper understanding of Will's internal conficts, and how they directly effected his relationships, beliefs, and actions. Ben is also a very peculiar character.  The audience first encounters him with the full knowledge that he is dead.  Ben is also the one figure that is able to move freely between the past and the present.  Because Ben represents that which Willy seeks, Willy feels that he can achieve his goal the same way that Ben did and so he believes that "opportunism, cheating and cruelty are success incarnate" (Smith).

Seven Pounds is a film about a man named Tim Thomas who is searching for a way to redeem himself after a car accident, which he caused by texting and driving, that killed seven people including his fiancé. Tim exhibits signs of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD throughout the movie which influences the choices he makes and the actions he takes during his life.

The film starts with a big action scene. James Payton (Ice Cube) is trying to break into a ring of passport forgers. It is all to lead to Omar, a ghost character who works in the shadows. He is a man that no one has seen but is an underworld kingpin.Kevin’s part of the film opens with him playing a first person shooter game much to the chagrin of his live-in girlfriend Angela (Tika Sumpter). He wants to marry her but needs to win the respect of her brother… who is of course James Payton.Ben is a security guard, dealing with high school kids. He is a good guy who tries to guide these youngsters on the right path. Ben does have grander plans. He wants to become a member of Atlanta’s finest and eventually become a detective. Movie reviewer Roger Ebert of RogerEbert.com writes, “Both Dan and Ben have elements in their characters that come under test in this adventure. Dan fears he has lost the confidence of wife Alice (Gretchen Mol) and teenage son Will (Logan Lerman), who doubt he can make the ranch work. The son Will, who has practically memorized dime novels about Ben Wade, idealizes the outlaw, and when Dan realizes the boy has followed the posse, he is not pleased. Wade intuits, however, that the boy is following him, and not his father. That's an insight into Wade. He plays his persona like a performance. He draws, reads, philosophizes, is incomparably smarter than the scum in his gang.” (Ebert)

The movie’s main theme tends to contrast two groups of people in the society. One group consists of people who come from the rural areas while the other group is that of people from the urban setting. The social norm of the people in the rural areas is based on simplicity and illiteracy. The story revolves around the murder of one of The Ward Brothers. The death of William occurs and his brother Delbert is accused of killing him. Delbert denies the allegations but before he is set free he is taken into custody and made to sign some forms.

Ben exemplified compassion in many cases, were he would sacrifice himself or his personal trails for someone else troubles. In reality this scene can compare with real life cases in the world today how compassion can be shared with people to impact others. In the movie Ben finds himself falling in love with a girl name Emily, who has an enlarged heart that he later gave his life for her to survive. Ben shared compassion with 6 other people, but given the most compassion to Emily.

This film centers around a man named Benjamin Martin. Martin is an excellent soldier who fought in the French and Indian War. Now when it is time to fight for freedom in the colonies, he holds back. It could be because he has lost his wife, or has seven kids; what the audience knows is Benjamin is willing to sacrifice what he believes in to make sure that his children have a safe environment to grow up in. Later in the film, he decides to join the Continental Army to avenge the death of his son. The movie displays principles from people who are fighting for freedom from the British (Colonel Lee), fighting to become an adult (Gabriel), and fighting for family (Benjamin).Two scenes display the conflicting principles between the characters of the movie.

If you get bored, what would you do? The main character, Jefferies (James Stewart) broke his leg because of an accident, since he is during his treatment period. Therefore, he has nothing to do. To spend his boring time, he would observe his neighborhood's behavior. But his boring observation discover a murder.This film gave me a positive impression because of its plot, the message behind film, the characters and the fluency of the movie.

The movie is about three teenage burglars that rob houses because one of the crooks dad owns a home security company and has a spare key to all of the houses. They become quite skilled at this and attempt to rob an old blind man because he was awarded a 2 million dollar insurance settlement after his only child was killed in a horrific car accident. The young burglars think that robbing a blind, retired old man is going to be a walk in the park. As soon as they get into the house they learn that it will be anything but easy. Having a unique storyline keeps the viewer from guessing what is going to happen next. This movie takes a sick twisted turn that no-one in the theater would have ever guessed. Just when you think you're going to guess what's going to happen next, Fede surprises everyone with a sick twist to the movie.

An emotionally stirring movie taking place in Jackson, Mississippi in the 1960s, “The Help” stars Emma Stone, Viola Davis, and Octavia Spencer as three women who share a common motive. This racially tense setting creates the perfect foundation for a drama film such as this. The characters’ personalities in combination with the emotion of the plot develop a socially accurate depiction of the struggles faced by the people of the time. While the racial aspect of the movie is dominant, viewers may also find compassion and friendship within the conversations and encounters of its characters.

A well-known phrase in the English language is, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” This catchy slogan is commonly used to convey emotion, individuality, and personality in an image. In the film industry, creating movie posters will indefinitely be a part of the phrase above. According to Alexander (2011), “a movies poster encompasses the message and feeling of the film, it should be the main source of attention for the release of a new movie” (n.p.). For this project I chose the genre, Drama. Within this genre, I chose three movies that are very diverse to analyze. The movies that I chose were, Holes, Gone Girl, and The Shawshank Redemption.
