Mrs. Rosnick: To Be An Effective Leader

The best teacher I’ve ever had was my Honors English teacher, who was the strictest and harshest grader I’ve ever come across. With her as my teacher, I spent the majority of my sophomore year stressed out. What I didn’t realize, however, was that the only reason I was struggling, was because I refused to acknowledge that what she was doing was teaching. The teachers I had previously, never challenged me in the way that she did and, because of that, I could do the bare minimum and still pass. After I finished her class, I realized that she didn’t just set me up to pass her class, but set me up to excel in the future. She changed the way I looked at education, and made me acknowledge that having trouble in a class didn’t mean that I was incapable;

Of the many classes that I chose to take, my two favorites were an English course and Health course. I may want to be a K-9 Officer, and these have few things in common with that career goal, but they were my favorite courses because of the professors who taught the course. Janice (Meredith) Privott for the English course, and Matthew Harpold for the Health course. These two teachers helped push me to better myself in almost every way. Mrs.Privott helped me on a personal level with stress and trauma; from her support she made me a much stronger person. Mr.Harpold helped me with my self-esteem, he took the time to help me when I needed it, even when I wasn’t in his class, just as Mrs.Privott did.

The teachers profiled in “Unforgettable Miss Bessie”, “My Favorite Teacher”, and “And the Orchestra Played On” are remembered and admired by the narrators. Miss Bessie, Miss Hattie, and Mr. K. possessed significant qualities that made them remarkable educators. They inspired and encouraged students. They only wanted the best for their students and prepared them for their futures, enabling them to overcome difficulties in school. Besides the content of their subject matter these educators their taught students to believe that their lives and future all depends from themselves: whether they would choose the clean asphalt road or dirty, bumpy one.

She was unapologetic about treating her students, especially her honors ones, like adults. She was strict about plagiarism and demanded our full efforts. Within our social studies curriculum, she found ways to infuse valuable life lessons and talk

There is a quote that I have embraced during my professional journey I like that state, “The influence of a good teacher can never be erased”. As a product of the Muscogee County School district, my life mirrors that statement. If it were not for my awesome teachers I would not be the person and teacher I am today. Growing up poor, I lived in Wilson Apartments and attended Fox Elementary School. It was my kindergarten teacher Mrs. Vignery that ignited my passion to become a teacher. She would always hold my hand and made me feel loved despite my many issues. As a result, I wanted to pass this love to my students. “One of the best teachers I have had the pleasure of working with,” Principal Curtiss Tolefree of Washington Middle School confided in me about 6th grade English teacher, Heather Ruha, as I crossed the threshold of her classroom for the very first time.

Through twelve years of school the teacher that stands out is my band teacher, Amanda Posey. She made me a better person, helped me grow up, and taught me many skills that I will use. She has made a positive impact and difference on my life. Posey has a passion for teaching music, teaches life lessons, and challenges her students making her an amazing teacher.

Throughout my high school career, a teacher that has had an impact on my life consists of Michael Sherwin. He is my Advanced Placement Government and Advanced Placement U.S. History teacher. Mr. Sherwin proves to be prominent in my high school career because his lectures in class are always enjoyable and very comprehensive. He is very knowledgeable on the subjects that he teaches and he is able to provide insight on countless topics. As his student, he is the reason that I have taken the initiative to partake in much more difficult classes throughout high school.

During my life I have had several teachers with who I hold in high regard. Mr. Anthony Arico, Mr. Marty Berger, and Mrs. Edna Thomas to name a few. Even though all of the above named teachers had a very profound effect on my life; my all-time favorite teacher would be SSG Daniel Spencer retired. He was my ROTC instructor for approximately two years and has been a mentor throughout my adult life.

The atmosphere she created in her classroom was unlike any teacher I’d ever had. If there’s one thing I could say, her class was never boring. Whether she was wearing a witch hat waving around a plastic sword – in correlation to Macbeth, or jamming out with an air guitar to Iron Maiden - pertaining to Dante’s Inferno. Over the years I have had the pleasure to work with a plethora of excellent teachers. Many of whom have had a lasting impact on me both as a performer and educator. The few teachers that have stand out were the perfect mixture of both great performer and teacher, but most importantly they seem to be heavily invested in my successes. The following teachers are just a few that fit this mold.

A high school teacher that has impacted my life is my 9th grade Geometry teacher, Mrs. Scully. Mrs. Scully has impacted my life from the very beginning. She has always been very caring and fun to be around. She is probably one of the most unique people in my life. She has always wanted me to do my best, and worked hard for me to understand the course. I was very troubled in mathematics, but the first time I received an 80 on a test in her class was the happiest moment for me. She is dedicated and she cares about you. She wants you to do good. I only had her for that year, but I still continue to see her. Sophomore and Junior year I would also use my tutoring time to be with her. I am now a senior class officer and she is our leader. She puts together senior activities and the officers help her. She influences me to be the very best person I can be. I see how she has these stylish cars and is overall happy with her life and committed to what she does. It’s inspiring and I can only wish to become as happy and successful as she is. For example, when I was a freshmen in Clear Lake High School. My favorite subject is math because I’m good at it and also math is interesting for me. My Algebra 1 teacher was Ms. Brodus. Her class rules was so strict. She always told students to put their cellphones away but, she was so enjoyable, delighted and pleasant talk to. Also, she always gave her plenty of time to every students. She was so organized about her every assignment. Whenever a student has trouble in any problem she helps them. This case study is an analysis of leadership as exhibited by Rebecca S. Halstead. The article published at Harvard Business School by Boris Groysberg and Deborah Bell details the traits, motivations and leadership style that Halstead exemplified. Through the analysis of this article I hope to not only document the achievements of Rebecca Halstead but also document and assimilate the leadership lessons imparted by her. An important observation I have made from the progress of time I this course is that study of leadership is synonymous with studying great leaders. The study of science involves experiments & making observations based on results. However, leadership is not an absolute science, there are various approaches. Every leader has a different style & combination of traits. Aspiring leaders & scholars of leadership must find their individual combination to succeed.
