During the early stages of life children start to develop and will reach many milestones. This includes speech and language development. Speech and language development is important because this is how children learn to communicate and socialize with others. Children will start to imitate your body language, actions, and sounds. This helps children by laying a foundation for their speech, communication, social, and language skills.
Mrs. Stone is a psychologist who works in a private clinic. She works with children who have many different issues or problems whether they be mental, physical, or emotional. Mrs. Stone has been in this positon for a little over 9 years now. Mrs. Stone has not worked in any other field of study besides the one she is currently in now for psychology and has been in for the last 9 years. Mrs. Stone says she would describe her present job as very rewarding. She stated that she feels a sense of peace when she is able to help children overcome fears and obstacles they face in life. Mrs. Stone also said that with her job she uses observations to help her identify behavioral, emotional, and psychological issues with children. She also conducts some scientific studies of a child’s behavior and their brain function. We worked on games, activities, and strategies to provide these children with the means to communicate verbally. I watched as these children became aware of their progress and exercised their need to communicate with their families. Watching their growth made me realize the impact I could have not just on one person, but their families as well. My interest was heightened as clients' families expressed their concerns of being unable to navigate resources within their communities. Many of their limitations were caused due to a language barrier preventing them access to support.
