In the works Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare and A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen, the main characters are deceived within the reliable relationships they created in society. Such deception occurs when Claudio’s trust in his friends and family interferes with his marriage to Hero. Similarly, when Nora deceives Torvald by hiding the truth and putting too much trust in her friends. These two events symbolize the similarities of the works and represent a connection of mistrust. The connection between the characters within the two plays demonstrates the tragedies that occur throughout the plot of the story. The concept of deception connects the roles of the main characters as they face consequences as represented in both works by creating relationships and trust within their societies. Deception plays a critical role between Nora and Torvald’s society in A Doll’s House. While the plot forms in the play, the characters do as well. This is present as shown “Can the world buy such a jewel” (1.1.175)? The behavior and feelings of Claudio start to form in this part of the play as trust in Hero creates his love. Claudio also starts to put trust in his friends to protect and support his decisions but that only creates more tension towards the middle and end of the play. Claudio’s trust in his friends backfires during Claudio’s wedding, “ O Hero! What a Hero hadst thou been. If half thy outward graces had been placed About thy thoughts counsels of thy heart” (4.1.108-110)? Claudio is not only in reality deceived by his friends, but thinks he Hero is deceiving him.
