"On those nights that I missed him most I listened to music" (Alexie 3086). Woven throughout Sherman Alexie 's work, "Because My Father Always Said He Was the Only Indian Who Saw Jimi Hendrix Play ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ at Woodstock,” is the theme of music. Its presence is a faint drumbeat of life, felt throughout the piece. It not only accompanies moments of sorrow, such as when the narrator listens to music while he is longing for his father, but encompasses every variation of emotion available to man, and because of its extraordinary influence on the characters, it takes on human qualities. Through music 's multidimensional effect on characters and its personification, Alexie highlights music’s everyday influence in life, suggesting that it is inescapable and necessary to the human experience.

Although, I did not have very much knowledge on music history or the many different music composers. My knowledge in music was mainly revolved around music theory and harmony. In modern world, many people are struggling to make friends due to their over reliance on the technology. However, music still remains a form of socializing tool for many people. Music we listen to dictate who we are friends with because it unites people with common belief and interest. There are many different types of music in modern society and each type of music represents individuals with unique experiences that shaped their identity. This pop culture in modern society can draw together various people from many different backgrounds of race, color, and even ethnicity. No matter what people say about music not being a big deal, it definitely matters to rest of the world as the president of Bard College, Leon Botstein, stated during the press release when he was invited by the United Nation as a guest speaker, “Music, in its fully developed extended forms, is the last refuge for a hope that lies beyond the linguistically expressible that in every human being there is a boundless power of imagination that need not be envied, for it has no transferrable value”. Even though music has no transferrable value to others, it can still act as an antidote for people who are suffocating with their dilemmas in life. The ones who truly appreciate the hard work behind the beautiful melodies of music are the ones that shares core life values because as a communication tool, music can penetrate through any barriers between people of different backgrounds.

To be able to create the music we hear today has taken thousands of years’ worth of discoveries, development and creativity from the collective of humanity, which seems exaggerated when we see how easily we can create music now.
A society is a community of people who share common interaction, culture and territory. These societies consist of more than two people according to their social relations and cultural identity. With a population of 10.28 million, the 1960s was a decade of political and social upheaval in Australia. New aspects of society were being considered in shaping Australian politics through several protests in defying authority. These included women’s liberation, racial equality in support of the Indigenous and Australia’s participation in the Vietnam war. This then led to the inspiration of creating protest music internationally. The major cultural and societal development in Australia was seen through several elements of pop culture, predominantly rock ‘n’ roll music which was heavily influenced by American and British artists and was especially successful. The Beatles, Elvis Presley and Johnny O’ Keefe are three of the most iconic figures that ensured the rock ‘n’ roll culture and lifestyle could spread rapidly within Australia and all over the world.
While most parents want their child to become a pro athlete, lawyer, or doctor, it is very uncommon for a parent to want their child to become a musician. The reason being is that the average musician does not make as much money as a pro athlete, lawyer or doctor. When in reality being a musician is not about the money, it is about self expression and elevating the mind which is more valuable than currency. Music is essential to people’s lives because it controls basic human emotions, for example, when one listens to sad songs one declines in mood or if one listens to something upbeat one feels the need to dance. This is called the Greek Doctrine of Ethos which was written in the 4th century B.C.E by the great Greek philosophers Aristotle and Plato. The Doctrine is still relevant today how for numerous reasons “Aristotle, in his politics explains the different kinds of music imitating specific feeling (anger, kindness, love), can affect a human being with the same kind of feelings. Therefore, says Aristotle, someone who listens to the wrong kind of music will grow up to be bad person and become a good person if they listen to good influencing music. Consequently, Aristotle (and also Plato) recommended the right kind of music in the education of young citizens” (The Ancient, 2009). While listening to music stimulates the brain, playing a musical instrument works both sides of the brain. Thus, playing a musical instrument affects a child’s brain development in various ways.
