Music Concert Review Sample

The music concert this review covers is the Plano Symphony’s rendition of the Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy in C minor and Symphony No. 9, The Choral, in D minor. The concert was held at a church in April 16, 2016, and it was a sold out performance. Since it was a night simply dedicated to Ludwig van Beethoven, the symphony titled the concert as “Best of Beethoven.”

On Friday night, November 13, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. I attended the Manhattan School of Music for the Jazz Orchestra that performed by Jazz vocalists and MSM alumni Jane Monheit and many other musicians. That place is unlikely the ordinary place, people have appropriate dress on and have nicely etiquette toward the performers, unlike me, many of audiences seem like that they come to this concert with certain knowledge of Jazz orchestra. And its musical venue was the ideal spot for the concert, so I sat in a decent spot spot that located at midst of the concert hall where I can view all the performers and hear performers’ music clearly. On the night of February 11, 2017, Sarah and I traveled to the Music Hall at Fair Park to see Broadway’s hit “An American in Paris.” This was one of the most breathtaking shows I have ever experienced. From the talented dancing, magnificent acting, and wonderful singing it was a great way to spend my night! I first thought the concert would include full band, background singers, different lightings and costume changes. My thought was quickly changed when I saw that there was one drummer and the artist with his two guitars. It was very different from the other concerts that I’ve been to. For my concert report, I chose to attend a University Chambers Players performance. Within this classical genre of music, the pieces performed were all homophonic in texture and each melody introduced was supported by chordal accompaniment. All of the pieces performed ranged from an eighteenth to twentieth century time period, and furthermore, each performance employed the use of western world instruments, such as the piano, cello, violin, and viola.

The concert I attended was called the Faculty and Student Recital, which took place in the Cisco Auditorium on April 11, 2017. The music that was on the program was mostly what is called “classical” music, as well as a Chinese Folk Song, an electronic composition, and variations on an Indian Tala. In the classical pieces, the instruments that were used were the violin, the piano, the cello, and the oboe. In the electronic composition, the computer was used to make music. In the Chinese Folk Song, the piccolo was used to imitate the unique timbre of a Chinese flute. In the Indian tala, drums from Ghana were used to imitate the rhythm and sound of Indian drums. This afternoon at 12:30, I went to the listening hour, a free noontime concert, at the Music Building. The concert of the day is SJSU Saxophone Studio and Dr. Victoria Lington’s Saxophone Ensemble Concert. Since it is just a one-hour noontime concert, most of the students there just where their t-shirts and jeans to the concert. The SJSU Saxophone Studio students have played six pieces of music in one hour. They began the concert with Sonata no.3 composed by George Frideric Handel (1685-1789). The second piece is Quartett (Allegro de Convert) composed by Caryll Florio (1843-1920). Then the third piece they played is Saxophone Concerto. After that, they played Premier Quartet op. 53 that composed by Jean Baptiste Singelee and Cello Suite No.1 BVW 1007 that composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. The last piece is Rondo, composed by Zdenek Lukas (1928-2007). All of the music performed today is classical music. Only the first and third piece play by alto saxophone with piano accompaniment. And the second, fifth and sixth piece is quartet that include soprano, alto, tenor and baritone. At the concert, I think I am a referential listener. I would think of a scene when I heard the music to understand the music and its mood according to the dynamic changing. For example, in the piece of Premier Quartet op. 53, I would image that people are dancing in the ballroom. The concert “Spring Winds” took place on Santa Fe College’s Gainesville campus. “The Santa Fe Handrummers” were all dressed in African clothing since they were performing traditional African songs. “The Santa Fe Winds” were dressed up in suits in dresses and they all looked nice. Some people in the audience dressed up while others wore more casual clothes. The venue was clean with comfortable seats. It looked like the venue was able to hold around a hundred people. The sound quality was great but it was a little loud due to how close the seats were to the stage. The concert was still enjoyable and I had a great experience.

The only thing that kept us going was the hope that there would be righteous music to rock out to. We heard of all the funky artist that would be there such as The Who, Jimi Hendrix, the Grateful Dead. As we finally made it to the field after an unbearable fifty mile long backup of wheels. We saw the largest amount of people ever. It was packed. All that could be seen was a sea of people in bellbottoms and flowing shirts. Most people didn’t have shoes on. Everyone was setting up camp, whither that meant getting their van ready or setting up a tent like us. We patiently waited for noon to come around when the music would finally start. It took us a while to get to the performance area because of the mad amount of people that were in the area.

The first half of the concert was only instrumental. There were two violins, two violas, and two cellos. They sat on stage with the violins one my right, then the violas in the middle, and the cellos on the end. The violins played a few songs solo. The second half of the concert was only the choir and a piano. Their performance started with the song Daybreak. The song Daybreak also had a few girls playing percussion, one of them had a tambourine. Using SHMRG, the Harmony of most of the choirs songs were very homophonic. The Melody of most of the songs were mainly slow, though a couple songs were very fast, and upbeat.

For this assignment I chose to compare and contrast two concerts. The first concert is from the modern era, while the other is a Baroque Era concert originating from the 17th Century preformed by a modern day orchestra. The Baroque Era Concert takes place in a large modern day Lutheran Church in front of a small crowd of well dressed onlookers. The second concert that I chose for this assignment is a modern day rock concert from the English Symphonic Rock Band, Muse. This concert takes place at the O2 Sheppard’s Bush Empire Theatre in London, England. The crowd is large and ruckus, the concert is loud, bright, and energetic.

On Thursday April 25, 2013 , I attended a jazz vocal concert at the Music Concert Hall. The first vocal ensemble opened up the performance with a slow rhythmic song called Blue Skies. It began with vocals and I noticed a light auxiliary percussion and drum rhythm. Also, the bass guitarist used walking bass and the piano and electric guitar joined in as well. The first song also consisted of two soloist Regina and Chantel who took the front stage to show off their chops. After the solo performances they fell back into the vocal sections and finished off the song as a complete band.
