The Considerations that Go into the Music in Disney Fairy Tale Films Disney as a popular animation company provides powerful fairytale films with the use of music that had a major impact on people and their culture. However, there are many considerations that go into music to make that popular fairytale film. Although some may argue that the music in fairy tale films may distract from the plot because it drags the characters behind, but the truth of the matter is that the music actually helps the plot in fairy tale films. I believe the music helps build enjoyment and create more attraction in a fairytale film. More specifically, the lyrics, instruments and cultures are taken into consideration in a Disney fairytale film. Alan Menken, pianist, has worked in the most popular Disney films that included The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Hercules and Enchanted. For Menken, the use of lyrics was a real important factor in Disney’s music. In The Little Mermaid, he mentioned we wanted an “I want” moment in a Disney film because there hasn’t been an “I want” moment before. Menken states, “My favorite part is that motif [that sounds like] water flowing, which beautifully set up the tone and became the central theme” (Snetiker 58). That “I want” lyric created the most inspiring songs in The Little Mermaid which is “Part of Your World.” Another popular Disney classic film, Beauty and the Beast, Menken wanted to do a classic Mozart composition in the beginning to have that quiet opening, hence the lyrics “Little town, it’s a quiet village….” These lyrics show that lyrical music adds emphasis on Disney’s music.
