Throughout high school, I have challenged myself both in the classroom and out in my community. By taking the honors classes, while participating in as many extracurricular activities as I can, I have learned the importance of balance and commitment. My school offered many dual-enrollment courses with conjunction to the local community college as well as Seton Hall University. These classes prepared me for the rigorous workload of college classes, while giving me the opportunity to earn college credits as a high school student. In addition to the dual-enrollment program, I have taken several AP classes that too transfer to college credits. My difficult courses has taught me to always give my best effort no matter how hard the task at hand is. I have taken three advanced placement classes and four honors classes. First of all, I did not understood English very well, and second, I discovered that I was going to graduate two years later than what I thought; I became a sophomore instead of a senior, and I did not like that. I can still hear on my mind the bad comments that some important people from school told me about my capabilities, without knowing how hard-worker and determined I was going to be. Our team practice everyday for 2 hours and our record was 23-1. We were the first team ever to win in our age division to ever win for St.Mary’s. We had a hard time in the beginning of the season. One of our best players injured her knee. She was running towards the loose ball and her knee twisted. She was out for the rest of the season. Looking back on it made me better because I learned how hard you to to practice or try to achieve your goal.

I have always succeeded in all of my courses with high marks, earning a place in the National Honor Society. I have been in accelerated English, math, and science since eighth grade and took my first Advanced Placement course in tenth grade. Midway through tenth grade, I made the decision to graduate early considering my senior year would be very minimal in course work. To graduate early, I took economics independently last spring and challenged the U.S History and Government course. I am currently taking thirteen credits in college courses and going on clinical rotations three times a week in the hospital through the New Vision Medical Program.

In 8th grade, instead of baking cookies or cake in cooking class or drawing pictures in art, I took German 1 to put myself in the position to be placed in AP German my senior year. My freshman and sophomore years of high school I took Photography to work towards taking AP 2D Studio Art along with other AP/accelerated sciences, maths, and english classes. Certainly, there are other students that took just as difficult of courses that I did, but I pushed myself to excel in other courses that others may not have taken.

A special attribute that sets me apart is my tendency to work hard. I constantly try to do my best in everything that I do. Throughout high school, I’ve always set a high standard for myself by taking rigorous classes, joining sports and clubs, and maintaining a high GPA. Even if certain classes didn’t have any relation to nursing, club meetings were the day before a large exam, or tennis practice was especially grueling, I still worked hard and put in as much effort as I could. With this type of attitude, I was able to maintain Distinguished Honor Roll and a cumulative 4.08 GPA throughout my high school career. In my Junior year of highschool I took a total of eight college level courses through Central Ohio Technical College, and passed each one. This was a struggle for me due to personal issues, however I studied hard and pushed through. The summer before my senior year I took an online Statistics course offered by the same college, and attended the Camp 4 Scholars at Kenyon College. I spent three weeks on campus having making memories, having new experiences, and building my academic skills in a Behavioral Neuroscience course, as well as an African American History course. In this program I learned many skills and had my mind opened to the world beyond my hometown though hearing others’ stories. A special accomplishment of mine that I believe sets me apart from my fellow applicants is that throughout my high school experience I have always been enrolled in AP and online college courses. By doing this I have been getting high school credits and college credits at the same time, so as some would say I’m “killing two birds with one stone.” I believe that this is a great accomplishment because while my fellow applicants were taking the easy way and only doing what was expected of them every year I wasn’t; instead, I was at home challenging myself to do more than what was expected of me. When assigned my first essay, “My Greatest Accomplishment,” I took time to brainstorm different ideas that defined me. The accomplishment that stood out the most to me was qualifying for State Track in four events on a sprained ankle. While writing this essay, I felt like a baby learning how to walk. My writing was unsteady and I took a few tumbles trying to get the paragraphs to flow. This reminded me of trying to run on my sprained ankle at the State-qualifying meet. I learned from my various courses that you cannot get discouraged when you know that you have a lot on your plate those are the times to rise above and to focus. Making sure everything was completed in a timely manner and to an above average standard was very important especially in my college courses. When you do not put the amount of effort needed it shows in the final product, I always want my product to look like I did my best no matter what it might be. Coming in from middle school it was easy to skate by and do everything at the last minute and still get perfect scores but now that I am being academically challenged those methods no longer work.
