Jake Hunter Instructor Peters Student Success 0200 31 October 2012 Bloom’s Taxonomy Essay I learned a lot of new ways in order to make myself a better student in student success. The 4 main skills I found most useful to me were note taking, time management, critical thinking, and reading. These 4 skills used together will make all the difference in school and grades. This class has showed many others useful tools but these are my most interested skills that I have learned and become interested in. Reading my information over and over will help my comprehend it better and leave less room for cloudiness and allow myself to have less and less questions about the information I need to learn so I can make a better grade on my tests and other assignments. I plan to do everything differently such as taking notes and studying a lot more physically. I plan to apply as much energy into my reviewing as much as I do in sports or in other activities. Reviewing and reviewing will help me understand things better and allow myself to be a better person and student. I plan to manage my time better and allow myself to create better schedules to get important things done without sacrificing time for unimportant things. These skills will affect my life tremendously. Not only will it make me a better student but make things a lot easier. These skills I’ve learned through this class have opened new doors and have showed me what I am actually capable of. I will learn these skills throughout my entire life and they will allow things to be much easier for me. The strategy’s I learned in note taking such as applying much more energy into reviewing information and reviewing it over and over so it won’t seem cloudy will help me increase my knowledge while disciplining me in becoming a better student. Based on my past experiences, most of my teachers relied on Bloom’s Taxonomy to some extent. Just as Dr. Richard Paul suggests, many teachers attempt to foster critical thinking skills when they “ask questions that call for analysis, synthesis, and evaluation,” even though this approach, according to Dr. Paul, “is seriously misleading” (521). As pointed out in the article, simply asking these questions does not teach students critical thinking skills. I can recall several of my teachers who would request that students “compare and contrast,” “determine as a whole,” or “defend a position” on tests or homework. Critical thinking has an important role in learning and development because if properly executed it allows me to see the entire situation instead of the individual task. I plan to take the necessary actions to determine the task with open eyes and an unbiased approach. Remembering the facts about the situation can help in resolving the issue. Understanding by reiterating the problem can help me further comprehend. Applying then analyzing the tasks and or situations so I can prepare the steps to come to the evaluation. I can see if the resources are accurate and thorough. The last thing I should be able to do to assure my critical thinking skills are complete is a form of creating. I take all the information of this situation, and use it in my final resolution. These steps are crucial in the ability to think clearly and not be clouded by biased information.
Critical thinking is described as unbiased, clear and factual thought process that helps any student with any decision-making process. Critical thinking is an essential tool that every student will need to master to continue academic success. There are multiple phases of critical thinking as described by Benjamin Bloom which include remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating and creating. The critical thinking process starts by remembering. If we can remember what we read and apply key facts we will be able to move forward to understand what decisions we need to make. From there we can then apply the facts to the decision we have to make and innovate, or create, as needed.

Over the course of the last six weeks, I have come to realize that critical thinking is an important asset as I continue my journey in life. I have found this course to be both challenging and rewarding. Most importantly, I find myself viewing problems and conversations in a completely different light. While I would not consider myself an expert at critical thinking, I would assess myself in as a Beginner Thinker. Paul and Elder point out in the beginning thinker stage an individual actively begins to take command of their thinking process across multiple facets of their life (Paul and Elder, 2012). Furthermore, we recognize that there are problems in the way we think and begin to consciously attempt to better understand we can improve our thinking.

A part of the class that worked well for me was when we were working on grammar. Learning about grammar was very helpful and feel that after learning about grammar my essays did get reasonably better. Another part of the class that i thought was helpful was writing the rhetorical essay. Before having to write that essay I did not know what that even meant, but the end that was the essay that I understood the most. It was also very helpful because weeks later after writing that essay, the SAT had the same topic for the essay portion.

With this, I prefer to see and read information to full gain comprehension. If I forget the data, or not clearly understand it the first time read, I have the option of reading it over. I do not always trust myself to absorb all information the first time around. I take a lot of notes to look at. Notes help me remember even though I may not read the again, I can refer to them in my mind after writing them down. I am not sure if just anyone reading them would get anything out of it, but at least I know what they mean.
The process of critical thinking requires you to ask more questions of both others and of yourself before a decision or determination is made. In order to successfully evaluate data in a critical manner, you must have a system in place to assess information as it is presented. In any situation whether you are having a conversation, observing others, or material you have read, you must be ready to probe deeper and ask the right question at the right time.
Studying skills will help you be more successful as well, there is also to much studying. To much studying can cause stress, and dense learning habits, also pushing your self to hard may ruin learning skills and cause your self to feel bad, or not as intelligent. Study skills for tests, quizzes, and exams is very important. Evenly spreading out study time will increase memory of the subjects you learn. Taking frequent breaks will make studying less stressful. Using flash cards, web sites, computers, or just a pencil and paper are all great ways to study. Having an answer sheet to refer to, and look over when your done will also help study and learning skills because it can help you see what you did wrong and need to fix. Having a study group or club before big tests, like exams or diplomas, will help you have more fun with your friends when studying.
Bloom’s Taxonomy was created by Benjamin Bloom in 1956. Bloom identified that there were three categories of learning. Cognitive: Mental skills (knowledge) Affective: Growth in feelings or emotional areas (attitude) Psychomotor: Manual or physical skills (skills).
The most important things to me now and what I plan to do, is continue putting myself first and finishing school. It is also important to me to focus on my mindset to keep a positive outlook on life. I need to not lose focus on myself. As long as I keep my focus where it should be, I will be able to reach my goals of having a successful life. This will include always being eager to learn, setting new goals for myself periodically and being consistent. I want to be a well-rounded individual and increase my success always by doing this, I must dedicate my life to learning. I want to educate myself with new ideas always to expand my mind.
