In formulating this essay I will give a descriptive account of my core philosophy and it 's ongoing development. I will evidence my way of working in context to counselling theory, relating this to the course 's guidelines. Giving reflections on personal, intrinsic values and beliefs, their application in practice within a placement setting.
There are many emerging influences that shape both my professional and personal development as a practitioner. Accessing a vast array of life experiences, contributes richly to the evolution of my individual approach. Aptly noted as “Counsellors and therapists are influenced by their own experience or story as they develop or adopt their theoretical stance”(Milner and Palmer, 2001, P. 17)). Ongoing instruction at college and engagement with fellow students continue to prompt further learning, allowing for openness and shared knowledge. This facilitates an atmosphere of mutual exchange which often flows spontaneously. In addition personal research undertaken around theoretical subject matter expands and enhances understanding. Attending training and workshops in Transactional Analysis, Emotion Focused Therapy, Neurobiology of Anxiety and Trauma and Seren work with the survivors of sexual abuse, have promoted exploration, development and growth. Discovering scientific aspects of neurobiology and its positive affects, affirm the effectiveness of the therapeutic engagement in counselling. Details consolidating these findings are described

Counselling sessions can help us work through a range of personal issues from everyday hardships to potentially life threatening situations. In this reflective essay I propose to put theory to practice by analysing and reflecting upon a one hour session with a professional counsellor. The session is to be recorded so I can refer to particular instances during the session.
1.1 Reflect on ways in which the study of counselling theory has developed their understanding of self
In this assignment I intend to define ‘counselling skills and knowledge’ and then show how I actively employ these qualities during my everyday life. These include informal helping interactions with family and friends, in a supervisory capacity at work and during skills practice sessions as part of my counselling course. Finally I’ll analyse the effects that these helping interactions have on me personally and the various ways in which I deal with those effects.
In this reflective essay I will provide an analysis of the counselling session I conducted and recorded. This will include a summary of the session. I will also describe the micro and advanced counselling skills utalised, as well as a critical evaluation of their effectiveness. A discussion of my application of these skills, as well as areas of possible improvement will supported by reference to relevant literature.
Understanding one’s roles and responsibilities as a counselling professional impacts practice influences the quality of work presented, and sense of satisfaction, along with shaping one’s professional identity. Professional identity comprises the alignment of roles, responsibilities, values, and ethics being consistent with practice. Professional identity development is a complex process through which the sense of unity with a profession is established. Many counsellors view professional identity as a process resulting in companionable personal and professional uniqueness. Gale & Austin (2003) affirm as counsellors ‘engage in this individually unique growth process’, it is hoped that the counselling profession as a whole will be ‘strengthened as they reach a heightened sense of purpose and a synergistic collective identity’. To build a personal relationship with ones chosen a profession, however, it is undeniable that a clear foundation must be established, together with a professional philosophy being constructed which clarifies and distinguishes one’s profession. Conversely, parameters impacting this foundation include personal values,
Ever thought of a stressless and convenient way or mechanism employed in providing care and health services, counseling psychology comes to mind. Nowadays, people are looking for the most efficient and effective ways to address their physical health, emotional, work and educational concerns which they may experience at different growth and development levels of their lives. In order to survive, most people go out of their way to get the best services from professional counseling psychologists in town. For an individual to be the best in his chosen career pathway, such an individual must passion and committed interest in his field. In this way, such an individual has identified his interest, defined his focus, mapped his route and freely cruise off.
As a counselor, being aware of the theoretical approaches and which ones best suit your perspective on human nature, complications, and change for an individual is vital. Not only is understanding the approaches important, but the counselor’s own values and personal philosophy are equally fundamental for the counselor to do their job efficiently.
The counselling process is based on the exchange of emotions between the client and the counsellor which aims to form an alliance (Hough, 1998). It involves the counsellor using skills in which they possess in order to communicate effectively with clients (Hough, 1998). This reflective essay clearly articulates my application of counselling skills used in this practice session and suggestions for improvement. It will provide a summary of the session, identification of a range of skills used and a brief explanation of the reasons for using the skill. It will also provide an evaluation of my application of the skills chosen, including verbatim examples, suggestions for improvement, also including verbatim examples to demonstrate what could
The essay will evaluate the necessity and importance of the development of the core conditions in the counselling process and critically analyse the strengths and weaknesses of the person-centred approach on the counselling process.
I intend to describe where I was, where I am now and where I aspire to be.
Write an essay of your own choice, e.g. “My understanding of person-centred counselling”. Relate and refer to your own life experience and/or your work context.
This application paper will discuss my personal theory of counseling or psychotherapy in a number of different areas. Specifically, I will discuss the seven areas of interest. First, I will discuss and describe
My core values and beliefs directly support my academic support and service to others. I believe in a positive attitude, that when you have a positive outlook on life you’ll see the good in people and the beauty in life. Seeing the good in the world helps you be kind to others. When you're kind to others they're kind to you, making it easier to help other people through their problems. I believe Cindy Lou said it best “The Cheermeister is the one who deserves a slap on the back or a toast. And it goes to the soul at christmas who needs it most. And I believe that soul is the Grinch.” I believe what she means by this is nobody should be treated badly.
To demonstrate the above I will draw upon my experience and learning from classroom triadic practice, my counselling placement practice and my personal and professional development to date.
