I will admit that, when I first saw the class "Professional Writing," I thought it would just be something I would have to get through to achieve my Creative Writing degree. In the beginning of the course, I still felt that way. My personas back in Week One were somewhat half-hearted and lacking in detail. Neither persona delved deeply enough into the character, although I could have done so if I put more effort in. But as this course began, I wasn't particularly enthusiastic about it and didn't feel an urge to put in all the effort that I could. Instead, I wrote half-hearted personas about a woman with a nebulous programming job and a mother with very one-dimensional children.
However, as the course went on, I grew to value it more and more. I enjoyed writing the book review in Week Two, and the interview in Week Three, although not something I plan on doing often in the future, was an interesting experience. My original thought that the grant and residency applications would be boring was proven to be entirely wrong, and writing the book proposal allowed me to fully flesh out an idea that had been bouncing around in my head for months. As my

It certainly wouldn't have been anything I would have felt comfortable submitting anywhere without serious revisions. But the book proposal that I finished yesterday is something that I feel could go out into the world before too long. It still requires revision, of course, and I would want to have other people look over it first, but its starting point is far beyond what its starting point would be had I written it last month. Over the past seven weeks, I believe my professional writing skills have grown more than I ever dreamed that they would. Thanks to this class, I have more confidence in my abilities to write professionally and more of an understanding of exactly how helpful that will
When I first started this course I didn’t know what to expect. I really enjoyed writing but there was a lot of areas that I needed to work on. When I first started to review the modules I was blown away by all the helpful sites that were at my disposition. The Power points and different sites completely changed my whole perspective of writing to a whole new dimension. Thanks to the modules I am more confident right now before I even begin an essay. I remember in the past how beginning an essay was so difficult for me because I didn’t know how to even start. In this course I have learned how to begin an essay, how to manipulate information, and how to use in-text documentation properly. These are just some of the few things that I will definitely be taking with me in the future for my courses and personal growth.
Over the course, as I began to see all the material and work come together, I felt a sense of accomplishment and felt very proud of what I had done over the semester. This learning experience has definitely opened my eyes and opened new doors for me professionally already.
Throughout this course, I was able to assess and evaluate my weaknesses and strengths in writing. This class has truly brought out my ability to write, a skill I did not believe I had. I now know what it takes to become a college-level writer. Also, at the beginning of the course I did not particularly enjoy writing. Now, however, I have a greater respect for
This course was comprised of many learning activities; each was designed to help me achieve the course learning outcomes. I have taken two college English classes in the past; however, it has been several years since my last college class. I have some experience in writing and this class definitely helped me get back into writing. I often have trouble brainstorming and capturing the subject I need to write about. This class definitely helped me overcome the challenges I faced in writing and being able to effectively express my ideas in a clear and concise manner. Not to mention, it definitely helped build my writing foundation through a step by step approach to each assignment. Therefore, this class bolstered my writing and communication skills.
Over the past four months, I have made great strides as a writer. The area where I have seen the most growth is in my use of the writing process. Prior to my enrollment in this course, I would sit down and write all my papers in one sitting. This class has taught me how to lay out a plan for my papers. I have learned how to effectively brainstorm/research, draft, and revise my writings before I complete them. Also I have learned to not just stop there, instead I am now going back and reflecting on my work after I complete it. This allows me to identify where I prospered and also where my downfalls may have been. With this information, I am able to apply this to future writings of mine; lessons that will stay with me forever.
It was my first day of college and I rushed through the campus of Colorado Mesa University to get to my first class. Even though I was in a hurry, I couldn’t help but notice how lush and green the grass was and how clean everything looked. I began to slow my pace as I found my attention captivated by the campus around me. The buildings looked new, the benches looked clean, the grass wasn’t brown and dry. Everything seemed so organized and well maintained, unlike my high school. After several minutes I made it to my first class and realized that slowing down to look around the campus made me even more late than I already was. I stood outside the door for a few minutes because I was so embarrassed to go in, fearing
Having a liberal arts education is very beneficial to owning your own business. By having a liberal arts education you learn many skills like the ability to think for yourself, also skills to communicate effectively, problem-solving and pattern intelligence skills. All these skills reflect on having your own business because you have to know what you are doing, knowing what people want, also knowing how to communicate with people and knowing how to manage your time efficiently. If you want to be an entrepreneur CEO'S really recommended on going to college to get a liberal arts degree because it’s not just learning about business, you learn and get the bigger picture about how things work in general.
Steve Jobs once said that “The reason that Apple is able to create products like the iPad is because we've always tried to be at the intersection of technology and the liberal arts.” Apple is now a multinational company selling more and more products every day. Their success can be credited to the balance between knowing what people want and how to give it to them. Figuring out how to give people what they desire is the technological part of Job’s foolproof equation. The word liberal is loosely defined as free, free speech, free thought, free healthcare… The liberal arts degree is seen as the study of expression in different medias like visual art or literature. Many want to completely obliterate the liberal arts degree and others think more
I have grown as a reader, thinker and writer thanks to this course. These are the things that I have worked on and improved over the past couple of months and I feel that my work shows this. In no way do I mean to sound over confident, I know I still have plenty to learn. However, I am extremely surprised and proud of myself. I will admit I had thoughts of previously giving up, I allowed myself to focus too much on the negative. Now, however, I feel differently. I have learned through this course how to write, how to express myself, and how to find the answers to the things that I don 't know. Most importantly, I learned to
Overall this process has been quite therapeutic and I luckily I was given the chance to just write. In the future, I’m not sure where my writing will take me, I might consider starting a blog and taking pictures. I think I would enjoy putting my opinions and voice out in public. This class has been amazing and it’s only the beginning. At the start of this class I was unsure if I would enjoy creative writing, but it has given me a positive outlook and I’m excited to see where life takes
Martinez said in her presentation. I am currently taking Intro To Professional Writing with her and I absolutely love that class. The workload is a bit heavy, but it honestly isn't too bad. The things we do in that class is very important and valuable. One of the most valuable things, in my opinion, that we have done is create a portfolio of professional correspondence. In this assignment, we created a cover letter, resume, a complaint letter, an adjustment letter, and a tweet, facebook post, and a blog post about an item. With the tweet, facebook post, and blog post we had to pretend we were from a company and we had to promote one of our products in the best way product, while also being honest about it's
Personally, what was your mindset and goals upon entering this course – have they changed at all and, if so, how?
I started to attend FKCC two years ago, as a new college student that wasn’t quite certain which field interests me. So I decided to start with general studies courses and work my way onto more advanced classes as I go. As I am more advanced student now and I decided to get my Associate's Degree in General Studies and Associate Degree in Nursing after that.
A Master’s Degree would help me become employed in jobs, part of engineering, architectural, and in technology firms. I would work with federal agencies such as the Bureau of Land Management, Army Corps of Engineers, Forest Service, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the National Imagery and Mapping Agency, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Also, I would work with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), or the Department of Homeland Security.
The major concern was that students both past and present did not meet the expectations of professional writing. These complaints were expressed by both corporate executives and graduate faculty. The situation was summed up at a curriculum review meeting. They may have the greatest ideas in the world but, if they cannot express them clearly and persuasively in simple paragraph form, that is clear, concise, and grammatically correct, they are of no use to the company.
