I will admit that, when I first saw the class "Professional Writing," I thought it would just be something I would have to get through to achieve my Creative Writing degree. In the beginning of the course, I still felt that way. My personas back in Week One were somewhat half-hearted and lacking in detail. Neither persona delved deeply enough into the character, although I could have done so if I put more effort in. But as this course began, I wasn't particularly enthusiastic about it and didn't feel an urge to put in all the effort that I could. Instead, I wrote half-hearted personas about a woman with a nebulous programming job and a mother with very one-dimensional children.

However, as the course went on, I grew to value it more and more. I enjoyed writing the book review in Week Two, and the interview in Week Three, although not something I plan on doing often in the future, was an interesting experience. My original thought that the grant and residency applications would be boring was proven to be entirely wrong, and writing the book proposal allowed me to fully flesh out an idea that had been bouncing around in my head for months. It certainly wouldn't have been anything I would have felt comfortable submitting anywhere without serious revisions. But the book proposal that I finished yesterday is something that I feel could go out into the world before too long. It still requires revision, of course, and I would want to have other people look over it first, but its starting point is far beyond what its starting point would be had I written it last month. Over the past seven weeks, I believe my professional writing skills have grown more than I ever dreamed that they would. Thanks to this class, I have more confidence in my abilities to write professionally and more of an understanding of exactly how helpful that will
