Throughout English composition 1 my grades have fluctuated drastically. Some papers were surprisingly great and some have been extremely bad. Overall though I have made minor improvements, maybe not specifically in each paper but overall as a writer I have. Although I have not and probably will never master the art of writing I know I have made myself better just in these past few months. This semester I faced the huge inconvenience of procrastination and over time I learned to change my method of writing; therefore, I could manage my time more wisely and put more effort into my papers.
In the beginning of the course as each week passed I rushed to turn in my paper before the deadline. I took a college class last semester, Spanish 1, and like English all assignments are due at 11:59 on Sunday night. Therefore, I told myself that I had plenty of time to work on my paper. Although I knew English required more work and effort than Spanish I still could not bring myself to work in class. During the week at school while I was supposed to be working on my paper I found

I finally realized I had all week to work on my paper; therefore, I finally took advantage of my time in class. After receiving my bad grade on my first paper I knew I needed to actually put it in effort during the week. Throughout the second paper “The Cause and Effect of Volunteering” I started as soon as I could and by Tuesday I had a solid outline. Then, by Friday I had a nice rough draft finished before the end of the school day. By Sunday, all I had to do was proof read and submit which was a major relief. My paper about volunteering taught me that time management is key in writing efficiently. I received a 90 on the rough draft and a 94 on the final copy of “The Cause and Effect of Volunteering.” My high grade on my volunteering paper gave me hope for my writing and motivation to work on my paper as much as I could during
In the past two months i fell like i have accomplished a great deal. As i focus on it more i realize i have become a better reader. I did this by concentrating on my readings and take my time to read them. With the help of my professor and classmates i began to analyze what i read.
Throughout the progression of this course I learned countless things concerning my writing. {Simkin, M. G., Crews, J. M., & Groves, M. J. (2012). While it’s there’s a many amounts of things ‘ve learned throughout the course, there are several things I‘ve learned which include the step by step process, including the correct usage of grammar and properly proofreading my work before I turn it in. I found out i had a major problem with my punctuation usage and insufficient when it came my periods and commas. I’ve invested some time writing through grammarly and other helpful sites to improve my writing skills. I appreciate the assistance and help I received from Mrs. C
Revisualizing Composition, by Jeff Grabill along with his fellow co-authors is a paper about a study carried across seven different universities across the United States Of America. Each university ranks differently in terms of various statistics such as enrollment, size and setting, therefore participants have different styles and approached towards writing. Following the standard survey method, a series of questions based on 30 different types of writing, were ranked in terms of popularity and value.
I was pushed constantly to work harder at my writing. I studied and practiced several new techniques and methods for prewriting and organizing the essays I found so hard to create. At first, I had quite a few bad days and quite a few subpar essays. My grades would vary greatly from paper to paper. This really scared me, as I hoped to keep myself from drastically dropping in my grades. Yet, I wanted to maintain my grade point average so I had no choice but to succeed and impress around every corner. I began to pour in, even more, work and apply all of the newly learned skills from that class into my mind. I hoped that soon I would be able to find a system for writing that helped me form proper
This English Composition II class has educated me so much on how to write better, write in different formats, schedule my time better, and how to improve my writing. Learning more about all of these categories will help me in the future when I need to write other essays for future college classes that I will have. I am very happy that I took this class when I did, because of it I am more prepared for college this fall. I just hope my future professors are as funny and kind as Mr. Stout has been towards
According to the graph in Harmony, my grade has only fluctuated slightly since the beginning of the semester. However, there is still room for improvement. I think that if I had a little more time off from work and if I push myself a little bit harder, the quality of my writing would have improved a bit. Going along with this, if I could go back and rewrite an essay with a more qualitative style, I would have to rewrite the college essay. It was way too redundant and predictable and it is not the kind of writing I want to be known for, I wish to write more engaging pieces. Also, despite wanting to rewrite the college essay, I feel like the best piece of writing was the rhetorical analysis I did about pastors refusing to wed same-sex couples. It is the best one I have written because while I wrote about a topic that is familiar to me, I wrote about a controversial, opposing
To start off, I would like to say that I am interesting in taking AP English Literature and Composition for a variety of reasons. I believe it would be a great class to get me ready for collage, which would be the main reason. I love to read and I want to become better at analyzing my reading and learn strategies to get better at that skill. I want to continue to grow in the areas of analyzing literature and to transcend in that area of expertise. Also, not to mention, it would look good on collage applications. Lastly, I know that there is a lot of reading in the class and I want to explore more novels and read more of the olden classics.
Have you ever wondered whether a writer’s voice and the standard rules of academic writing can exist on the same page? According to Dr. Debra Pena, English Professor, University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and Mathew Teorey, English Professor, University of New Mexico and the author of "Using Freshman Composition to Analyze What Students Really Know about Grammar" a writer’s voice and the process of academic writing can exist on the same page (Personal Communications February 13, 2017, Teorey 2). However, my first essay In Freshman Composition II titled, “Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE): Is it the New Death Sentence for Future Athletes Playing Sports in America?” where I lost the power of my voice to the process of academic writing.
I grew up in a extremely small town outside of Birmingham, and the high school I went to is not known for its academia. If I recall right, my high school english classes assigned only 1-2 papers a year, so writing 4-5 in a semester was a completely new adventure for me. I learned many things in this course that greatly helped me improve my writing. My writing overall improved in style, flow, and basic fundamental writing thought processes, which is all the areas that are hard to learn. I started to see my style and flow had grown bland and very fact based instead of grabbing the attention of the readers. Now that I understand where my writing needs improvement, I can start focusing on those areas and fixing my papers.
Coming into the 3D program, I was none too excited about taking any general studies classes, including freshman composition. English class has always been the one class I have always had a disdain for. In high school, English was all about reading literature and being told to write several pages on a topic seemingly unrelated without any direction to guide us. Upon coming to Freshman Composition, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the class was nothing like those classes. I feel as if I have learned many things and developed greatly as a writer throughout these last months shown in this portfolio. The main improvements of mine consist of my ability to manage time, my ability to structure paragraphs, and my ability to improve my papers through my own writing process.
Before this course, dread engulfed me as an upcoming deadline loomed. Procrastination was my enemy, though I couldn’t jettison it. I would sit down the night before and furiously scribble everything out on my notebook paper in a rush to turn in the next
As a high school student taking on a college course, I acknowledged and accepted the challenge that lay ahead of me. The main reason I selected Composition I and II was that it allowed me to vastly improve my overall writing skills. Developing my techniques will benefit me when I am required to compose any writing assignments for my future college classes. Therefore, with that goal in mind, I chose to take this class while still attending high school. I began this class as an average writer; additionally, I did not know the majority of the writing rules or how to make an essay meet its potential. Over the course of these two classes, I believe that I have proven my writing to be more seamless and interesting to read.
On January 14th I was able to learn about three of my classmates in my composition II class. The three classmates I learned about are Djordje, Natalie, and Angelica. We learned about each other’s hobbies, achievements, and goals.
The rubric for blogs/journals has four critical elements. The first is critical thinking and reflections. This refers to being able to support your claim with either personal experience, learning, or logical thought. The second critical element is Integration and Application which means that you are able to show you understand the module content and gave careful consideration while answering the topic. Voice is the next critical element and it means that you are able to express yourself and reach your audience in an appropriate writing style. Writing is the last critical element and it means that your paper is free of grammar and spelling errors.
Over the past few months, I have learned several different writing techniques. While all of the different types of papers were difficult to write, I believe that my writing skills have improved. In fact, I did not understand all of the assignments, but I did try to do my best on all of them. While I should have used more transitional words in between sentences and paragraphs, I feel that I learned a great deal. It is true that I have not had very much writing experience and the writing process is difficult for me. Sometimes, I do admit, it takes days to complete one assignment, but it will be worth it when I am a proficient writer.
