In today’s world, ethics is frequently thought of as belonging to a particular religious point of view, but by definition that is not the case. Ethics is defined as “moral principles that govern a person’s behavior or the conducting of an activity.” We make rules for ourselves to live by which affect our actions. We all have different mindsets, therefore have different opinions on what is right and wrong to us. Our surroundings, the people we converse and interact with, our religious commitments all impact our ethical development. I grew up in a Christian home where my parents took me and my sisters to every Sunday service, bible study session and taught us to read the bible every single night before going to bed. It was my uncle who taught me the meaning of honesty. Not because he actually was honest, but because he lied all the time. I think he felt that the easiest way out of any given situation was generally the best way out. Eventually I began to pick up on all of the lying. There was a time I didn’t want to go to work on Christmas day, and knew there was no way to get the day off unless I had a good excuse. I told my uncle about it, and he told me exactly what to tell my manager. I lied to my manager saying I had lost a close relative and could not come in to work. The next day, my manager came to me and gave me a big hug and told me I could take the week off to be with my family. Her generosity made me so guilty for not being honest with her, so I told her the truth. Of course, I was fired, but I learned the importance of being honest. I rather live knowing that I was honest, even if it hurt me or someone else, than to feel guilty or regretful for not being honest. I now strive to be honest with
