Traditions are meaningful activities that you and your family can do regularly. Traditions play a big role in our lives because they help us bond with our family or friends or they help us catch up with some family or friends you might not see a lot. Most families have yearly traditions that they do. Most of the time it is just to have family time or to catch up with some family that you don’t normally see. My family has quite a few traditions that I will be telling you about!
My family has different traditions that we do every year. These are very important to me because I get to see my family that I don’t normally get to see and I get to go to some places that I only go to once a year! One of them is our family Christmas with my cousins that I only get to see around twice a year. We also have a family Christmas with my half sister and her family too that I don’t get to see very much so that is also very important to me. On our family Christmas with my grandparents, my mom and dad, my aunt, uncle, and my cousins the day starts off on the twenty-sixth of December. They travel from Monroe, Louisiana to Greenbrier, Arkansas every year. The twenty-sixth is one of my cousin's birthday so we always celebrate that right when they get to Greenbrier. They normally get to Greenbrier around noon so my nana always cooks a special lunch and then we have cake and give her the presents we got her. After that, we normally catch up a little bit with them and then at dinner time we always
In my culture traditions are very important in your life. For example, one tradition that has been in my family for many years is going to the park and celebrating Easter with the family. We barbecue, play sports, and then at the end of the day we have an Easter egg hunt for the young children. Another tradition of ours is to do a Christmas Eve dinner at my great grandma’s house. During this event you are with your relatives and close friends for dinner and for a social gathering until the early morning of Christmas day. Many of our traditions revolve around getting all of our family together and spending time with them.
Some families do nothing and others throw a huge feast with family and friends. My family always throws a Thanksgiving gathering of family and close
Another tradition that my ancestors did was make dream catchers which get rid of bad dreams and the which are made of feathers, willow rings and string. For my last tradition which is buffalo hunting is one thing that my ancestors did for food and for tools ( I want to try buffalo hunting).
My family has many traditions one of them is to make tamales on Christmas Eve so they are ready for Christmas Day. My family stays up on Christmas Eve and we stay up all night till the clock hits 12:00, that is when we start opening presents. Later on we go to sleep/take a nap and wake up so we can do El Nacimiento de Dios. El Nacimiento de Dios is when our family gathers around the setting of where Jesus was born and "we see his birth". We usually do a posada which is huge dinner with many types of Mexican foods like tamales, posole, rice, beans, etc. Each year my grandma, grandma, uncle, aunt, and some cousins come for Christmas from Mexico and we have a family gathering where we meet our family members in which we have not seen for a long
She said that her family started to focus less and less on the traditions after they moved to the United States and as she and her brother got older. For her family most of the celebrating was done on Christmas Eve or in the early hours of Christmas Day. They have always opened their presents at midnight on Christmas Eve. First though, they would go outside and watch the fireworks display while
At Easter, our extended family comes over and we have egg hunts for the little kids, kids, and adults. We also eat Easter brunch together. On Thanksgiving we also have our extended family over! Our family will eat an immense dinner cooked by my mother and my aunts. Football is usually playing on the TV, and everyone is having a great time. Christmas is our family’s most celebrated holiday. On Christmas Eve, we have lunch with some of our friends at Troegs. Later in the evening, we go to my mom’s brother’s house to give gifts and have a good time. On Christmas Day my immediate family will celebrate christmas together eating a delicious breakfast- usually cinnamon buns- and give gifts. Later that day, we’ll head over to our nana’s house and then to my grandma’s house. At my Grandma’s house we celebrate Christmas and my cousin’s birthday (which is on the same day). Two days after Christmas we will celebrate my birthday, which is on the
What’s a tradition to you? Is it something as simple as ordering your favorite dish from your favorite restaurant on your birthday? Is it something spiritually important like saying grace over your meal everyday? What if your traditions were your daily routine? Night Flying Woman by Ignatia Broker asks an even bigger question: What if your traditions had to change?
When one thinks of the word tradition, the thought that often comes to mind is a positive one, such as the thought of Christmas dinner at grandma's house or church on Easter Sunday. Most of these traditions we follow blindly, meaning that it is just something we do even if we do not remember why. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a tradition is “an inherited, established, or customary pattern of thought or action” (757). Since it is inherited, we do not really have a say in receiving it or not. It is expected that we continue the tradition because that’s what our ancestors have done. While following a long line of tradition can be truly great, when the reason for the tradition becomes blurred it can become harmful. In Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery,” blindness can be undesirable when following a tradition and can make that tradition dangerous.
It is important for people to know their families traditions because everyone has different holidays that they celebrate, so you would need to know what holidays you celebrate or you might get your family upset with you.
Some people have done these traditions for a long time. So kind of like in the real world take Christmas for example many people have been doing it for a long time the parents get rid of you and send you to grandmas house then they buy Christmas presents to hid in there closets until Christmas eve then they wrap the presents and put them underneath the Christmas tree and then when you wake up they say hey look at the presents Santa has brought you.
We all have family traditions, some of which we take pride in, some of which we dread and despise but, whether you know it or not they are what make us who we are. One of my favorite traditions that I can truly say I’m passionate for would have to be Thanksgiving dinner. The dinner for the holiday goes by in a blink of an eye because of all the enjoyment. However, the preparations that lead up to the day are long and prestigious even though they are what make the dinner so great. Since the holiday comes up before we know it, we get started as soon as the year hits mid fall.
My family always wanted everyone to be happy, so we always go somewhere for a day or take them shopping. It is mostly like a ritual we do for that one family or kid that we surprise the kid or family for the day, so it is like a Christmas for the child or family.
Tradition is defined as the passing down of components of a culture from generation to generation. Traditions of different cultures are performed to try and maintain a connection with the ancestors and provides a continuous identity within that specific culture. One specific aspect of a tradition that is carried out in different cultures is the Wedding. All over the world, different cultures carry out wedding traditions that were passed down from many generations before. Wedding traditions are so important because they hold special meanings within a culture and allows one to honor their family and the actions of their ancestors through the specific tradition.
One of these is that on Thanksgiving everybody comes together to my parents’ house in New Jersey for a huge feast. On Christmas only my mother and the children (me and my brother) travel to Illinois to spend a week with my grandparents. On New Years Eve we all get together at my parents’ house in New Jersey and toast to the New Year with champagne and apple cider. During Labor Day weekend all of my family travels to South Jersey to my grandfathers’ condo. We usually spend all of our time on the beach and barbequing, except on Sunday when we go to church. After all, my grandfather is a minister. One of our biggest family traditions is going back to Puerto Rico. Every year my mother and I travel back to Puerto Rico for a portion of our summer vacation. Now that I am older I travel there more often and stay there much longer. My father never joins because he doesn’t like my mothers side of the father too much and he thinks that we when we speak Spanish we are all plotting against him. Of course that’s not true though. My bother doesn’t speak Spanish so he doesn’t like to go either. I guess that tradition is one that belongs solely to my mother and I.
Since my family lived so close together, we had many family traditions that remain important. We gather for nearly every holiday for a meal and routine. For Easter every year, we have an Easter egg hunt and dinner at my grandmother’s house. For Christmas Eve, we always went to my great-grandparents house and had dinner and exchanged gifts. For Christmas, we celebrated at home, and then went to my grandmother's for breakfast with our cousins. The importance of all of the holidays we celebrated was that no matter what was going on in our lives,
