My feelings towards the Roundtable discussion are mixed, as aspects of it were useful and others were not. On one hand, I enjoyed “meeting” my peers despite being thousands of miles apart. Since chatting via Skype includes audio and visual cues, it was helpful put a voice and a name with a face for the first time. Moving forward, I believe this will help humanize my interactions with them in that these peers will no longer simply be a name on the screen. Perhaps doing a similar exercise in small groups at the beginning of the semester as a way for students to get to know their group members.
On the other hand, there were parts of the discussion that didn’t run as smoothly. First, despite our efforts it was difficult to coordinate a time for the three of us to meet. As a result of a non-responsive group member, we had to hold two Roundtable discussions. While I didn’t mind sharing my research, it was frustrating to have to allocate additional time at the last minute to accommodate one member. As you said yourself, we are busy grad students and time is a valuable commodity! Additionally, the quality or usefulness of feedback from my peers varied. Some responses were thoughtful and truly aided me, whereas others were more generic or tried steering me in a direction I did not want to take.
2. How comfortable did you feel presenting your research project to your team? What could you have done to make this experience more effective? In addition, what would your teammates or
I felt very comfortable and very accepted within the MDT meeting. The atmosphere was friendly and relaxed and everybody there seemed to have something to contribute. Everyone was encouraged to participate and I felt that I could have contributed to the discussion if I had known the patient better. I feel they would have listened to my ideas and not dismissed them due to me being a student. Everybody communicated well with each other and had the best interests of Kate in mind and so discussions were made until the best outcome was achieved for her. This demonstrates the benefit and importance of communication within a team and how all contributions within meetings should be valued (Perkins & Repper 1998).
First of all, to be put in a group of individuals that I had never met or interacted with before was always going to be difficult. The process of getting to know them better and finding the strengths and weaknesses of each team member was hard at first but the more we worked on the presentation, the better we became at communicating and getting the
I think that everyone in my group gave good and valuable input. I could tell that some deep thinking went into the write-up of people’s jobs. Everyone came to class prepared and I could tell that Kelly, Nicole and Emma put a good effort into thoroughly completing their jobs. We had no problem discussing anything that involved the book. The discussions went really well. I think that the fact that we all had our own thoughts and opinions about the different events that occurred in the book, and even the book itself is what made our discussions so benefiting. We all found the book enjoyable to read, though we wouldn’t typically choose this type of book for ourselves. A Long Way Gone was different for all of us and even though we all really liked the book, its themes and plot were kind of new to us. Still, we had no problem discussing it. Over all, everything involving the book went smoothly. I felt as if I had plenty of time to read that weeks chapters and do my job by the time it was due. Nicole, Kelly and Emma also came to class prepared, having read all of the needed chapters and done their job
While doing the research it made me interested in being a motion graphic designer possibly working with companies for advertisement and commercials on television when I’m done with my schooling. When planning out my presentation I had so much information I wanted to share but when I realized I only have 2 minutes or less to talk I had to cut a lot of information out. Eric from the Digital Arts and Design field came into our class and mainly talked about motion graphics and although it was interesting he said information that I wanted to bring out as well in my presentation and since the presentation would be the following class day it kind of discouraged me to repeat the same information they already heard. The project overall was very informative and having a group helped me with making friends in
We made sure to stay onto of our work and were able to go back and help other group member who worked after us with their parts as well. Because we worked through Google Drive, we were able to all work on the project equally at the same time. We all logged in, created our slides, added our information and picture, and left comments for one another on there. Bhavik introduced me to a new meaning to the quote, ”I don’t want to see you—die—trying not to suffer,” which I was able to later use in my presentation (Baldwin 264). I set up a group text message so we were able to ask each other questions and stay connected at anytime. Our group also met up in the library the morning before presenting so we could discus how we would present to the class. Working in the group setting was very important because we were able to hear each other’s different interpretations of scenes we did not understand or scenes we analyzed
I felt like due to most of us not knowing each other and ever really interacting with each other, there was tension. We did not know how to start a conversation over some very intense issues that this activity bought upon us. I definitely was anxious at the beginning because I was nervous about how such a a large group was going to interact with each other. Other times that I felt some tension was when people started disagreeing on ideas. When people thought their idea was better than another persons. I felt some tension when people started using their job title as being superior to voice their opinion over
I was able to provide insight to 2 of my peers based on previous WNA’s that I had written. Moreover, I was able to provide insight to another student by providing another perspective on how she could dissect her topic. On the other hand, I was able to receive helpful feedback in which my peers provided me links to articles that might help in my research. I feel that the online discussions create more results than the in class discussions. I believe this is true due to the fact that people are shy and do not like to speak up in
During the group discussions it helped me earn feedback from my different peers in the class and view the different thoughts and ideas that my fellow classmates had. When writing an essay, having different classmates review my work and give feedback helped me learn more about myself and other people. It helped me learn that people will always have a different point of view when it comes to writing, and I also learned that peer reviews are a precise and beneficial way of showing different ideas and showing mistakes that I made in my essay. This also contributed to my overall improvements of
The feedback I received was varied. The planning, structure and content of the presentation was good and well structured. Based on this feedback I was happy with the flow and how the presentation came across from this perspective. As a result I don’t think I would change how I went about creating the presentation. I do a lot of planning and project work as part of my day to day job so structuring it I found quite
I facilitated the third session as the group entered into the middle phase of the group process. In the middle phase the group focused on getting the work done (Shulman, 2012). All of the group members, both have things in
To analyse the presentation and teamwork I need to be able to understand everyone has different experiences and different ways of working and had their own view on teamwork. My confidence grew as I got to know the team. Giving the presentation has helped me with my confidence, which I will need when I am working in the health care. I have also learned to speak up more and encourage others to take part when they where being quiet and not pulling their weight. It was good to do research using the appropriate methods, looking at journals and professional sites. I managed to hold it together during the presentation in front of everyone. I knew the presentation was not going to go as well has it could due to the lack of practice. The reason I was so nervous was
In the Spring of 2016 I was selected among students of Longwood University's English department to participate in a semester long research conference. Through the Meeting in the Middle: Undergraduate Research Conference in Medieval Studies I was able to develop a semester long research thesis, prepare professional presentations, analyze complex subject matter and develop a working solution, while also communicating with professionals to develop and refine the research content. This experience is pertinent to the position because it required dedication, persistence in learning about an unfamiliar subject matter, and utilized strong communication skills in a professional setting.
I feel our discussion was semi-successful and our group worked pretty well together. We followed the standard agenda most of the time, but I feel we did some things that did not follow it. We rushed through the first two steps, task clarification and problem definition, in the standard agenda model most likely because we were all nervous from filming ourselves and could not think of how to start it. We then spent most of the time discussing our research in the fact finding step. We ended after the solution criteria step; however, we did talk about possible solutions throughout the discussion especially in the solution criteria step. I feel that the reason we took so long on the fact finding step and did not get farther was mainly due to
The group discussion has just passed, and it was really a hard work and challenging. There were many precious lessons I got, and, hopefully, so did with my friends. Our group was consisting of four students. As a quantity, reasonably, we had had enough power to do a better work and gained a satisfying result. As I flashed back to the group discussion, it was enriching my memories. Some were in high spirit, remarkable and enjoyable. Opposite to it, few were disappointing.
It started with the bulk of our research which was mainly going through information on our topic and finding support for the points we wanted to discuss within our paper. Then we created our group outline we found this to quite easy as well as it was easy to divide up the work of doing so by each focusing on our own lens then bring it together to work it all together, we also at this point discussed and formulated our introduction and conclusion. Next we began to go from the process of going from the outline to our actual paper. We did this by creating our each own section then putting them together, however since we had already worked on making sure the segments would flow together well in the outlining process we did not come across many problems. While we had each individually put together the main detail sections of our paper, we also put together our introduction, conclusion and solution segments of our group paper together. For the introduction segment of the paper we had a bit of disagreement about a word choice however we eventually settled it over conversation and overcame it. After we had finished our first draft of our group paper we let another group of peers that were in our class look over our paper to make sure we had not gotten caught up in any biases or if we were overlooking and major paper structure flaws. After small critiquing from the other group and looking over
