My Identity In Education

College was always in the equation during my moratorium, the time in my youth to figure out myself, however, I just never knew exactly what I wanted. Part of my identity has always been my love for knowledge, for learning and for trying to understand the world a bit more. Despite the challenges during high school and during college, education will be in my life. This love for knowledge means that schooling created and is part of my identity as a person in general but as a student. The challenges during my schooling in school made me who I am and will continue to enhance the development of my identity,

In Silva's Coming up short, one of the subsections discussed the powerlessness on the path to adulthood for many working-class adults, "Despite their belief in education as the path to upward mobility, pupils from working-class backgrounds who lack familiarity with the rules of the system" (Silva, 47). This meaning that people are aware and believe that a higher education could lead to greater things however it seems to be risky, and luck plays a large role. In this section, they talk about how some people just feel powerless that they strive for an education but it doesn’t work out for several reasons. A higher education simply did not suit them, they weren't prepared or because they were not sure what exact major they want so they end up wasting money. During my moratorium, "…designate the time-out imposed on adolescents and youth during which they are supposedly expected to sort out the components that will constitute their adult identity" ( Cote and Allahar, 74), I had doubts on whether college suited me, I didn't feel prepared and I didn't feel like I was able to be a professional. Throughout my schooling, I never had a strong idea of what I wanted to major in or have a career in, I did not have the option to look for options, I never had the chance in school to be fully passionate to a subject. This is still an issue now, because I lacked the options to explore my passions and interest I know just chose a major that seemed interesting. This is the powerlessness many young adults experiences, especially hoping that luck will be in the course of one's college career and will hopefully provide a worthwhile
