The Bible to Me
The Bible has 66 books, 1,189 chapters, and 31,102 verses, but it is so much more than that. For thousands of years, the Bible has changed the lives of so many people and lead numerous to follow Christ. Personally, I have grown up in the church my whole life, but I finally made the decision for myself to follow him in 2012. Throughout my time as a Christian, the Word has been my rock. Anytime I was sad or stressed I would close my eyes, flip to a random page, and let God’s word surround me. No matter what, God has always had something to say to me each time I went to His Word. To me, I believe that God’s Word has been a focal point of my journey in Christ.
When I was younger, all I thought about the bible was that it had a lot of cool stories where there were heroes and there were bad guys (who always got forgiven) and that was the extent of that. Of course, I knew that I should love my neighbor and the basic Bible verses such as John 3:16, but as a grade schooler, I never really knew any more other than that. It wasn’t until middle school that I truly started to understand the content in the Bible. I started to rely more and more on the words that I read every week at church and every Bible study on Wednesday nights. I started to understand the gospels and the amazing words of wisdom behind the different chapters.
Later as I went into high school, my knowledge of the Bible only grew. I was taught to believe in the holy trinity, God’s free gift of eternal
To truly know and grow with the Creator, one must spend time with the “love letter” He inspired for His Creation. That letter, which I affectionately call love letter, is the Bible. When I was in school and I would get a love note from a young lady, I wouldn’t just sit it down somewhere to collect dust. Instead I would take it, store it in a safe place, and come back to read it over and over again.
I see language as a huge blessing. When utilized properly, it can encourage, teach, and help others. It can also be used to express ourselves to our core. To be able to reflect what is within our hearts, though, we must dive deep into emotions and language. Paired, they allow us to understand one another so that we can communicate and help each other through life, something that is definitely not meant to be done alone—which exactly explains why God gave us all community. With life being like an ocean, I truly believe that we cannot survive without God, first of all, and also without people. Because they are so important to me, I place emphasis on understanding how to properly use the English language so that I may glorify God, showing my thanks to Him with my every sentence whether it is verbal or written or thought. This portfolio, thus, is a reflection of my identity and journey with God—all constructed with language and emotions to portray my love for communicating with Him and His people. “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable inyour sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.” Psalm 19:14After being rescued by Him, I gained sight. I no longer saw the things around me and within me with a blurry lens; I took on the clearest lens, as though my eyes became cameras, to see things with truth. With this new vision and mindset, I began to see my own mistakes as well as those around me. Because of this, I understood what needed revision and what
Why do people read the Bible? Some read it for inspiration, others for information, and there are those who read it for their vocation. No matter what our reason for reading it is important that our interpretation is correct when we read it, and share information with others. In the South University online devotional says,“It is easy for the pastor, priest, chaplain, lay teacher, or other Christian leaders to fall into the trap of reading the Bible only in preparation for a sermon or a Bible study, or some other form related to ministry.” It is true their are those who spend most of their reading time in preparation to share with others. There should be a balance so they will not starve themselves in their spiritual
I believe that the 66 books of the Bible are God’s word revealed to us, written by God’s apostles and prophets. In its original manuscripts it contains truth without error as it unfolds the story of God – his creation, our fall, his redemption and restoration; therefore it is, and will remain to the end of the world, the true center of Christian union. The Scriptures are the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds, and opinions should be tried.
The Bible is not simply a good book; it is the best book! It is not just a religious text, but it is a literary masterpiece that mixes consistent real-life historical events with religion and literature. If you like to read a mixture of literary genres then reading the Bible would be right up your alley because this book is full of narrative genres, stylistic forms, poetry and prose. The reader doesn’t even have to have a particular religious orientation to take an interest in reading the Bible because the Bible can be read as a novel, filled with stories of flavorful characters, murder, war, sibling rivalry, deceit, and mayhem. It is an interpretive portrayal of human experience in artistic form.
While the Holy Bible is filled with many different types of writing, including history, narratives, poetic literature and apocalyptic, it forms a cohesive theme that tells me where I, and all things originated from, as well as my purpose in this world. Because the Holy Scriptures give, what is to me, a plausible understanding of who I am and how my life matters, I have discovered that I want to align my life and future in accord with its directives and commands. The reason that I hold these writings with such high regard is because the Holy Bible says of itself that God breathed it out onto men to write down and that it contains the very instructions needed for me to live a life that is honoring of God and worthy of what God deserves. II Timothy 3:16-17 states, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work”. For this reason, the Holy Bible has taken on a role of great importance in my life and because it is the very revelation of God, revealing who God is and how God has worked and continues to work throughout history, I have determined that it is foundational to my faith and a practical guide to direct me in determining the course I should take in this life.
Theodore Roosevelt said, “ A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education.” Reading the Bible sounds good in theory, but many feel like Ezekiel, a young man in his twenties, who said, “When I looked at how thick the Bible is, I lost any desire to read it.” Others also may feel that the Bible is outdated in today’s age, and that it lacks any real value. What about you? What do you think? Did you know that the Bible actually tells us why we should read it? 2 Timothy 3:16, 17 says, “All scripture is inspired of God and beneficial…”. So, despite the fact that the Bible was written thousand of years ago, its principles still can benefit us today in our day-to-day lives. There are four main ways that the Bible can help
Books are written to enlighten and to bring an understanding, as well as an intended message that can be valued. Often knowledge from books teach us specific meaning or purpose and having a comprehension of the central themes allows individuals to grasp the intended lesson. The Bible has countless themes and lessons that are wide ranging for us to learn from (Precepts, 2008). The themes of the Bible facilitate in assisting with understanding the scripture, so the information can be applied to daily life (Precepts, 2008). The Bible offers many important themes for us to study, such as the main characters God and Jesus Christ. Both the Lord and Jesus are the most significant points of the Bible and all the way through the Bible
The main theme of the Bible for me according to my understanding is the following; God’s love for humanity is so great that he gave his son for our sins; “For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life” (NIV John 3:16). The Bible demonstrates Jesus willing sacrifice for us in order to make a pathway in which we can receive the gift of salvation and eternal life in which we can rejoice with the trinity of his existence in our forever home in heaven. “Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (NIV John 14:6).
God. Growing up in a Christian family I attended church on a regular. I was educated about the importance of the bible directly and indirectly through my pastor and family. We all learn of the Ten Commandments, the consequences of sin and ways to handle life.
I always knew about the bible, it would be very hard not to when you live in a Christian household and not to mention my dad being the Senior Pastor at my church. These going through the motions continued into my teen years and being a typical teenager, I start to question why I was doing the things I would do. During all the questions I asked I started to drift away
I became a Christian in 1982 while in high school. I had never attended church prior to Easter 1982. I found something interesting in the whole of the service and decided to read a Bible. The Bible made some sense to me. I had a few questions about some of the stuff that had happened and was given Evidence that Demands a Verdict by Josh McDowell. Well that answered most of my questions. I was also given Mere Christianity which answered more questions. I felt convicted by the Holy Spirit and asked G-d to come into my life and forgive me of my sins.
Ever since I was born I have been attending church. At this young age they teach you everything about the main stories or the main points of the Bible. At my church I learned stories from Noah’s ark to the story of Adam and Eve eating the apple from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. I learned about who was the narrator of the Bible and who created our earth. I never knew who were the people that printed out the pages or chose a specific font for the Bible. I didn’t have the background knowledge of what country or if it were the Romans that actually created the Bible. In this world there has been several theories that the Romans were the ones that wrote it or it was the English that wrote it and printed it out. After reading the book “How we got the Bible” by Neil R. Lightfoot, it gave me the right knowledge and understanding of who wrote the wonderful collection of books. Understanding how we got the Bible means that we have to know how it was written, on what it was written and who wrote it.
It was not until the enrollment at Faulkner University Christian College with instructor by the name of Don Myers that learning about the Bible inspired me wanting to know more about God and His Son, Jesus Christ who hung and died on Calvary cross for my sins. After engaging in Bible courses, I found myself purchasing many more Bible, along with other literature and totes. The literature purchase allowed me to receive, “free Bible” which I eventually overall ended up with four of them. The last of the four, I used to deliver my first public message in February of 2015. The three
My journey with God started in February of 1993, when I went to a ladies’ conference in Columbus, Texas. It was while the speaker was explaining that she knew there were some of us out in the audience, who felt guilty about something they had done in their past, and they did not feel that God could forgive them for it. But then she quoted from God’s word; “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, not principalities, no things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom 8:38-39 NASB) The speaker continued on to say that all we need to do is
