Throughout my life I have lived with an injury that still taunts me today. I never thought this would still effect me 5 years later. This injury has helped me grow as a person because I worked very hard to get back strong again to where I could continue to play the sport I love. In fifth grade, I was at recess playing like a normal kid. I was on the monkey bars and I suddenly couldn’t hold on anymore. I began to slip and I fell off and I landed right on my ankle. I was taken up to the nurse to later be picked up by my mom and taken to the hospital. When we arrived we waited for hours before I was seen. When I finally went back to see the doctor they could not figure out if it was broke so I had to be sent to a specialist. I could not walk for days because my ankle was so swollen so I missed a lot of school. After maybe a week a finally I went to school, but I was in a wheelchair. The next week I went to the specialist and they discovered that I had broke my ankle but they didn’t know what part was broken yet. I was scheduled to have a CAT scan done on my ankle, and found out I broke my tibia. They told us I was going to need a cast and crutches. I was in a wheelchair for almost 2 weeks because my doctor's office could not give me crutches. My parents had to go to about 5 places that would take our insurance. We still could not find any, so we finally ordered them online. Maybe after 3 weeks I got my first cast of many. It was not a pleasant experience. But now that my
Last year, in October during the cheerleader’s concert, that my mom and dad were singing at, I asked, “Do you want to dance?” My mom said, “yes”. Walking out to dance, she fell and accidently tripped me and landed on my ankle. It felt as if someone was breaking my leg in half. It got really numb where I couldn’t feel it, but I still knew I was in some pain. Picking me up off the ground, my mom sat me on the bleachers. Everyone came over there and it was really embarrassing. My dad carried me to the car and we drove to the dollar store to buy me an icepack to put on it.
I was thirteen, and I had just come home from a school softball game. My friend Dalton had invited my sister and I to come and swim at the neighborhood pond. My sister stayed home, but I got permission to go. After a while of swimming, Dalton looks at me claims that he’ll jump out of a tree near the bank if I jump out. Of course, I accepted my friend’s little dare and climbed into the tree, focusing on the seven-foot-deep drop-off off of the bank. Regrettably, I didn’t jump far enough. My right leg landed in the drop-off, but my left leg hit the clay, which caused all of my weight to shift to my left foot. I felt an immense pain in my ankle and started screaming while crawling over to the bank as Dalton ran to get my mom. After I finally made it to the emergency room, I found that I had broken my fibula at an upward slant, which caused the upper part of the bone to slam down into my ankle.I had completely blown out every ligament and tendon on the left side of my ankle. I had to have a plate and four screws implanted into my fibula along with the surgical repair of all of my ligaments and tendons. The entire ordeal left me extremely interested in the human body, and this interest was heightened when I had to get my appendix removed a few months later and again when I took Anatomy and
When I found out that I had a bad knee I was absolutely devastated. It took five doctors to find out what exactly was wrong and it turned out to be way worse than my family had anticipated.
I was walking down the stairs when all of a sudden my knee locked up and it would not move and was very painful. I yelled for my dad and brother, they had to come down stairs and carry me upstairs so i could sit down. This happen a couple times and at that moment I knew something was wrong and I needed to get it checked
After much debate, it was decided I was in fact NOT faking an arm injury and I was taken to Urgent Care. There I was X-Rayed and determined to have no fracture or break… I got a sling and a pat on the back. I returned home feeling very weak and wimpy, but my mother was not as sure that I was fine. The next day, I went to an orthopedic doctor who took one X-Ray and determined I had in fact broken my elbow. I was casted and told to come back in six weeks, little did he know I would be back a little
It was not long before I went to the doctors and got an x-ray confirming my foot was broken. The doctor told me I would have to wear a boot and crutches for six weeks. I giggled as I was always curious how it is to be in one of those cool boots. I miscalculated this small crack and chip on the x-ray and figured I will be alright. To be honest, I was relieved since my
When I was in eighth grade I sprained my right ankle over spring break.I was at my grandma’s celebrating Easter and was playing with my cousins. I ran to grab a ball that had been kicked out of the area we were playing in and as I was running, my foot got caught in a hole and I tripped and fell. I tried to get up, but as soon as I put weight on my ankle, I fell back down. My cousin,Payton, and my younger sister, Tosha, had to help me get on our fourwheeler and drive me back to my grandma’s. They helped me get into the house and onto the couch. Then my dad and my grandma had me put ice packs on my ankle and had me try to stand on
When I arrived at the hospital, one of the nurses took me into a room and asked me some questions about how I fell and what part of my wrist I landed on. I answered that I fell while doing hurdles and that
It was April 2010 and I was playing in the South Atlantic Conference Basketball Championship. I left the ground for a layup and when I came back down, I was in excruciating pain. I couldn’t walk for a few days and when I went to my doctor, he told me my knee was sprained. I spent months reading a plethora of articles online. I nagged my parents for months to take me to a different doctor. They finally
Over the summer of 2009 I was playing with my friend Carissa, at Rohner Park, while we were playing on the monkey bars after a while of jumping off and landing on our arms to many times my bone gave out and i broke it. While screaming in pain my dad tried to ask someone for a cellphone to call my mom to come pick us up and take us to the hospital. When my mom finally arrived my dad rushed me into the car so we could go to the hospital. While we were in the car i told my mom to go faster because the pain was really starting to hurt.
It was in summer and I was the age of 8 and my friends were bored so we all thought of football but we hated two hand touch so decided to play tackle because I thought what could be the worst that can happen but I wasn't near ready. So we started playing and I got a pass to me and I caught it. But then a kid spears me or dives at me and he hit my chest and hand and I fell to the ground in pain it felt like a car ran over my hand and I knew it was broken.
When my mom got there she took me to the emergency room. The doctor took me for x-rays and about an hour later he came to me and said that it was broken. My heart sank. Then I asked him, “Will I get to do anything?” He said that I wouldn’t get to do anything. Then he went and got the stuff for my first cast. It was cloth paper and cast material. He put the cast material around my arm. Then he wrapped it in paper wrap. The doctor said, “You can't get it wet or it will fall apart.”
When I saw the x-ray of my wrist I did not understand a single thing the doctor explained all I knew was that I was going to wear a cast for a month and to my surprise, it was not going to be a pretty pink color if not an ugly off-white color. It was in that moment that I realized that I was screwed, I was not allowed to get the cast wet which meant no beach or pool for the whole month and when you live in a tropical island and have a pool in your backyard this are horrible news. I was to stay with the cast for all of winter
During a soccer tournament in 11th grade, I suffered a ligament tear in my left ankle. It was a horrible injury and I could not play soccer for 6 months due to it.
Honestly , it was my first time going to the Accident and Emergency department i was scared and worried about what will happen to my wrist and how will my parents react .While my teacher was doing all the registration i sat there in state of shock . It was really a blessing having my best friend by my side comforting me and constantly telling me everything will be alright . I was then called to do some X-RAYS before consulting the doctor . My parents finally came and just right it was my turn to consult the doctor , my mother then went in together with me . The doctor was then examining my X-RAYS that i took before consulting him . My heart was beating very very fast as I am a right hander and i need my right hand to do many things . Finally the doctor spoke , he said that there was no obvious or major fractures shown in my X-RAYS but i have to put an temporary cast on my hand. He then referred me to a specialist at KK Children Bone Specialist to ensure there was no hairline fracture or any small minor fractures .
