Over the course of this project, there have been occurrences where I decided to add to what I observed, along with what my focus was on. At first, I wanted to find out how people thought when they were working. This focus was obviously difficult since I was not allowed to say how people thought, nor did I know. What I noticed through my observations was that I resorted to looking at people’s expressions and noting their expressions over other observations. Not only did I enjoy doing it, there were many instances where I found comparisons between what I was looking at throughout each observation. Looking back at my observations and how I decided to do them, there a few actions that I might have changed or would have done differently. The first thing that I would’ve done differently is I would have done each observation for a longer time period. By adding a longer time period, I would increase the possible amount of people I observed in an area. With more people to observe, I might have found new comparisons along with the addition of the ones I have already found. Additions of thematic comparisons add to my data by securing what I found, adding more basis in my observations. Another addition or change that I would add to my observation if I did everything again would be going to a different area. I enjoyed where I was observing, but I felt after the first few observations that there were few people to observe. This did allow me to gain detailed notes about what they were doing, and it gave me time to properly observe them. However, I do not believe it game me enough data to work with if this were a study I was relying on. Due to this, I would change my course of location to an area where I assumed there to be many more people, thus generating more data to gather from. The setting for my first observation assignment was at the Starbucks, in Gibsonia, Pennsylvania, near my family home. The day I choose to observe was Sunday, November 27th, 2016, between the time of ten o’clock and eleven o’clock am, after church hours. The second observation assignment location was Mugsies, a coffee shop, near Westminster College, in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, between the time of eleven o’clock and twelve o’clock pm during lunch hour, on Tuesday, November 29, 2016. 179). This is an important statement as it means the researcher needs to start thinking about how they will analyze their data before they even collect it. In order to properly analyze the data, the researcher should transcribe each interview and then compare it to their observations and journal (Badenhorst, 2008). When analyzing the data the researcher must keep in mind the research questions, and create themes through the data that relate to the research question. First, the researcher will analyze each session together, coming up with keynotes and themes from the observations, interviews, and journals (Anderson & Austin, 2012). Once that is analyzed, each piece from each session will then be compared with each other. For example did participants enjoy the program in session 1 but not by session 5? Why did this happen? Was the program too repetitive? Was it the same thing over and over? Was there a different instructor? After the analysis is done the researcher must put the data into a legible discussion

Participant Observation – The advantages are realism and natural behaviour, thus greater validity, new directions for research, and qualitative data. Conversely, there may be observer bias and effects, lack of quantitative data, difficulty in replicating or generalising, time consuming, and may raise ethical issues (Haralambos, et al., 2002).

Throughout my years in writing and taking English courses I have always been a faulty writer and never have been strong in this aspect. Truthfully my writing was the same until I came to college and took English 104 with Professor Horjus. Horjus had taught me things about myself and my writing that I never gave my full attention too and explaining my thoughts. Professor Horjus had started off class on making us say things we could work on after turning in an essay and feel we lacked or felt very strongly about. Being able to talk about the lack of my writing skill or even the strong aspects in my writing let me see that everything teachers have taught me in the past has honestly not really helped. College English has defiantly shined a new light on writing for me.
I honestly do not believe that there is anything that I would change with regards to how I created my paper. This is because I feel that throughout my paper, I truly put my all into my writing by using a certain passion in order to create a paper that truly reflected the ideas which I wanted to show within the paper regarding the topic. Likewise, I also feel that when it comes to the structure of the paper, it was quite well constructed and had a high degree of “readability” so to speak which resulted in an essay that was a pleasure to read. These conclusions are not based upon my own perspective, but rather from the feedback given by multiple people who I requested to critique my writing within the paper. Reflection is considered as a vital element of professional practice as it precedes to insight and then subsequent change in practice. The hypothesis of reflection is not new as it can be tracked as far back in the 5th century by the influential Greek philosopher, Socrates and to the 1930s primarily focusing on John Dewey’s work. Dewey is one of the founders of learning from experience. He theorised reflection as ‘active, persistent and careful consideration’ (Dewey, 1933) initiated by a specific situation which was opposing, perplexing or uncertain. One of its most common use today is coming up with a thought, an idea, or opinion made or an observation made as a result of concentration, suggesting in essence a way of thinking in which one looks back and meditate upon (Agnes, 2004).
