This year I took debate and throughout this whole year I learned in many ways how taking debate is beneficial to me, and how it helped me throughout my school year and my later life in general. Such as how to speak clearly, extend my voice and how to pronounce and enunciate clearly so that my voice is vocalized clearly and in a way that is in a way that is very understandable to everyone. Which can be seen on numerous occasions from ballots at the beginning of the year such as “ AST # 1 ” which I learned a lot from as it was my first debate and at this tournament I took congressional debate and what I learned from this is that I have to use my voice because if I didn’t I wouldn’t be able to speak which is what happened to me and at my …show more content…
One thing that greatly affected me was my self-confidence, that had taken the better of me before I had taken debate, and once I took the class my confidence in anything was much improved, for example just like our debate quote ” I spoke my mind ” more frequently after I took debate. Which has liberated my voice to what I want to say, no matter what anybody believes about me, and leading to myself not getting held back at all Debate has taught me how to have more in-depth conversations with people and a better way of communicating in a way that is clear and complex. I struggled in a lot of areas in debate and even currently I still struggle in a few areas. For example, these past 3 school quarters in debate I have not done so well and I fell short many times just trying to look for what my calling was in debate. But in the end, I found out what the purpose of a debate was which is, “ an engagement of an argument by discussing opposing points “ and for me the two sides of my debate where the part which learned and the part that struggled. Such as, the part of me that struggled remembering points and the part that forgot to practice, which held me back from succeeding in speech and debate. But the part of me learned, and it learned from the struggles I had, such as how I spoke to how I acted, and changed them to a more advanced and proper way, that where some areas I struggled in and how I learned from them. I can improve upon areas such as
I have had debates in previous classes, but just with partners, not a large group debate like in this tutorial activity. Our group was pro two tier healthcare and the other group was opposing it. For
A discourse community comprises of a group of people sharing a common and distinct mode of communication or discourse, especially within a particular domain of intellectual or social activity (Oxforddictionaries, 2017). Some of the discourse communities I consider to be a part of, include an Indian joint family, my peer group, high school education in India, the Apple community and education at Pace university.
Paul Ryan once said, “Every successful individual knows that his or her achievement depends on a community of persons working together.” We do not often realize how important it is for everybody to work together to achieve a goal. A community is a group of individual people gathered together to form a whole, like a school, local church, government entity, non-profit organization, sport team, etc. This whole can make reference to a discourse community.
I think most people can identify with this movie, the fear of speaking out to others to convince them of your point. The fear of trying to prove a point to others that may have more knowledge on the subject or be able to refute it better. In reference to the movie it was about defending a personal honor, having the right to speak out and be equal with others. Debating requires excellent mastery of vocabulary, logic, and nerves. In a debate, you need to be poised and confident in order to get your point across effectively. Just like a regular speech. There are many speeches that have lifted hearts in dark times, gave hope in despair, inspired brave feats, gave courage to the weary, honored the dead, and changed the course of history. Without inspiring, passionate public speeches many people may not have had the fortitude to press on.
The most significant challenge I have faced was when I was growing up was reading. Reading is one of the most important things it was hard for me to say some words that I thought I was never gonna learn to read ever even if they were just small words or big words I struggle so much while growing up. When I was
Throughout high school, I harbored a deep admiration for debate and dreamed of joining the team. Its quintessence of ideals in rational argument, tolerance for conflicting points of view, and rigorous self-examination appealed strongly to me. Yet simple things, like pronouncing a word wrong or having an accent, were enough to hold me back. Thus, I passed through my high school years unnoticed.
I have learned how to ask better questions and to talk to my teachers when I need help or do not understand the concept well. I make sure that I have a relationship with my teachers and introduce myself at the beginning of each semester. Learning how to communicate with my teachers
There is no way you have been able to watch these debates without responding to the TV as if the candidates could hear your opinion. The candidates represent two polar opposite views on issues like women's rights, immigration, healthcare, education and taxes, and you undoubtedly have some opinion on it. As a voter, you will be sharing your opinion on questions like: Who should be getting tax breaks? Should the government help fund education? Should illegal immigrants be allowed to stay in the United States to continue their education? Your opinion must be heard. As a minor, I can advocate for
I have noticed from my friends that even though the election is over, the dialogue has not stopped. Instead, people are more vocal about their options and thoughts. I agreed when Professor Gillespie stated that she does not look to the government to have all the answers, because they too are human, and are flawed. I enjoyed how both sides had good arguments and were able to back up their positions. When students posed questions, they answered them with thought. Listening to two different perspectives allowed me to see how people think differently that I do, but in the end just want the best for their

Without that, I never would have learned about this remarkable passion of mine and my life would have been completely different and most likely would have been much worse without the things I learned from debating. In the end, whether I end up being right and getting that little bit of extra meaningless pride by defeating someone who I’ll never encounter again in an online battle of wits behind a mask of anonymity or being disgracefully wrong and learning as much as I can from my mistakes, debating is one of my favorite activities to partake in and I wouldn’t give it up for the world, although I’d welcome you to try and convince me
John Swales (1990), professor of linguistics, defines a discourse community as an exclusive group of people brought together by a common goal. According to John Swales (1990), every discourse community has six characteristics that makes them a discourse community. Overall the group must have a shared goal, in which they communicate with each other through different genres and lexis they have developed; genres are different types of communication that the group employ and lexis is the specialized language utilized by that particular discourse community. They also tend to have a hierarchy within the group and require individual group members to truly participate to be counted as a part of the discourse community. (p. 471-73)
Growing up I didn’t socialize with people so it was hard for me to join a discourse community. But we I was around the age of fifteen I joined the basketball team, and ever since then it became my discourse community. In this paper, I’m going to explain how the team was a discourse community to me. And what roles we did to become a discourse community. Many people say basketball is all about winning games. But its more than that, I’ve learned many concepts in the game of basketball I’m going demonstrate what made my basketball team a discourse community.
Starting my freshman year, I wasn’t sure where I’d fit in, but I knew what I wanted to accomplish. I wanted to increase my confidence when it came to public speaking, what better way to do that then to join the debate team, I thought.. It was the first day of school and I wasn’t quite sure how to approach my debate class, I was afraid everyone would be much more qualified to be on the team then me. Afraid of the judgement and if I’d be of any use to the team throughout the year. But it was too late to turn back.
Initially, when I first registered to enroll for this online Speech class, I did not know what to expect. I thought that we would only meet in order to present the required speeches and then I thought that we would have a virtual classroom to give speeches were we were all online at once. Now I know that both of my guesses were wrong. For our speeches, we either record them online and invite classmates as audience members to watch, or have a live audience of family and/or friends that record you giving your speech in your living room or somewhere similar. When I found out that these were the ways I would be giving my speeches, I was so surprised. When I am speaking in front of a live audience in a classroom, I get so nervous, so I thought that this method of giving presentations might be less anxious for me.
