Overview: In English 101 there are several aspects of writing that I did not get to explore while attending my high school. I appreciate that this class gave us freedom to write our stories without harsh guidelines that twisted our creativity. In the beginning half of the semester I wrote a narrative essay about a night in high school that I will never forget and a profile essay that included an interview about my advisor’s advice for freshman engineering students. The second half of the semester, I wrote an analysis essay about a politically incorrect advertisment and an essay exploring a current issue in the world. The broad topics, themes, and formats of each essay provide students like myself a stronger foundation in writing essays. I …show more content…
I appreciated the fact that I can now remember this event more vividly than before and consider how this event could have changed me as a person into who I am now.
Profile:
The profile was designed for students to get to know a faculty member and hopefully make meaningful connections. The writing process began with choosing a topic then formulating questions and collecting answers through an interview. A major trouble spot was deciding how to portray my interviewee. I was unable to get started on my story until I knew how to describe my interviewee. I wanted to hook the audience, but also have the audience identify with the him and his ideas. Writing the story and then adding the quotes was easier than starting from the quotes. Future writing will include remembering that the tone of the story and portrayal of the characters are the cornerstones for any project is important to keep in mind. Before I created the interview questions, I could have considered a direction for my story. In conclusion, I learned a lot about my interviewee by paying attention to the little things because they led to the bigger picture of a person. The topic I choose to interview my advisor actually helped me more as an engineering student. I think I took advantage of this essay which benefited myself more as a freshman student than as a student trying to learn more about another person. I enjoyed interviewing a stranger and in turn, I learned valuable life lessons from him.

People have many ways that they write. Some do a process of doing drafts so they can look through, edit and make the paper better. Others will just write a paper and turn it in. My process consist of starting with making a thesis. Then from the thesis I create the topic sentences for the topic at hand. The best way to write the essay in a good format and have good detail in the writing I would write a paragraph a day. By doing that process it allows me to get what is needed out on the paper so none of the paragraphs are mixing content and making the paragraphs less structured. This process not only makes writing essays less stressful while also getting the paper done quickly.
I have been practicing on how to improve my writing over the past few weeks, which has taught me a great deal about writing. My teacher would like me to evaluate and explain my strengths and weaknesses in my own writing. This evaluation is in between my two essays. One on my own and another with my teacher's help. I have strengths and weakness in my introduction, body paragraphs ,and my conclusion.
When I look back at my writing before having any college experience, I can see that I had a lot to work on. I can say that I was never really a big fan of writing anything much less essays. Even when I was younger, I just did not have a great big interest in writing. This was because I felt that I could not elaborate as well as others. I was not use to having to write anything really, but I now feel that I have a better grasp on the steps that I need to take to get my writing on the level that it needs to be.
We are already midway through the first quarter of my last year as a high school student. I find it hard to completely grasp how quickly this year is passing and yet I feel like we've already accomplished so much.
Writing is an important form of communication. It is a personal process that portrays your thoughts and views to someone else. It is not only an important skill to have for school work and certain professions, but daily messages such as emails, texts, and tweets as well. It can have a big impact on how you come across to certain people. Because of this, it is very important for me to practice writing. I believe that this course has improved my writing, which will help me in many ways in the future.
Olympian, Kim Collins said, “Strive for continuous improvement, instead of perfection.” This quote can also apply to students in school in many different ways. Students always want the best project or writing grade that they can possibly get. While that is a worthy goal it is not realistic because students are not perfect and they are still learning, and developing important skills. In my personal essays throughout the year I did strive for perfection, but I learned that I could not do it. I had to make slight improvements to better my writing for the next essay.
I have trouble writing because my writing seems to be a little “tongue-in-cheek” as my AP English teacher said. (I have a couple unfinished examples that I will attach). I tend to not know exactly what I am trying to say in my essays. It is not that I am a poor writer per se; I just have an issue focusing my writing. I enjoy writing; however, I become engrossed in the way I want to present my ideas. Perhaps it is that I do not know the audience to whom I am writing. I usually use proper grammar and mechanics but that is definitely not enough to write an exceptional essay. In this course, I feel strongly that I will develop these skills. Another concern I have with writing is when it is timed. I have never performed well in a timed writing assignment;
As a recent Egyptian immigrant to the United States, writing is the most difficult subject. In 7th grade, my writing process started to develop with the help of an amazing teacher. Ever since 7th grade I have been practicing wiring to be close to the high school writing slandered. I reached my goal last year when my act writing score is 6 point which places me in English 101. I doubted myself so, I took the Accuplacer test which also, placed me in English 101. I was scared when I saw the results that I’m going to fail this course. After taking this course, it made me more confident in writing and showed me my writing level which needs more practice. This class helped me improve my writing skills, by getting great feedback from my instructor
Coming into San Diego State University I wasn’t sure what to expect out of any of my classes, especially my writing class. In high school I had taken AP composition and language which helped me improve as a writer but even a college level high school course is not the same as an actual college class. Before college and throughout high school I didn’t think of myself as a great writer, I have always been very average at writing. At the start of the year I wasn’t a very strong writer but RWS 200 is a huge reason how I overcame challenges and became a better writer.
Throughout my years in writing and taking English courses I have always been a faulty writer and never have been strong in this aspect. Truthfully my writing was the same until I came to college and took English 104 with Professor Horjus. Horjus had taught me things about myself and my writing that I never gave my full attention too and explaining my thoughts. Professor Horjus had started off class on making us say things we could work on after turning in an essay and feel we lacked or felt very strongly about. Being able to talk about the lack of my writing skill or even the strong aspects in my writing let me see that everything teachers have taught me in the past has honestly not really helped. College English has defiantly shined a new light on writing for me.
This week I think my writing was better than the previous weeks because I had learned about many of different type of writing including cause and effect, positive and negative, persuasive writing and comparison which can help me to collaborate the style in my writing to show the variety of the structure. Also, this week I prepare an outline for the research project and I faced the problem on my idea which I’m not assured with this idea so this might be the problems when I write the paragraph. As a result, I got the advised that I should find more references to support the ideas. The another task in this week was listening. The teachers showed us about the listening exam which you have to answer in multiple choice. In my viewpoint, I think answer
While I was starting the process of writing the connection narrative I felt that my writing was going in the right direction. When I finished my rough draft, I knew more work was required in order for me to get a high grade which I would eventually work on. Going into the peer review I felt nervous because I received low scores on my previous papers by my peers. When I got back both of my reviewed papers I was surprised, to say the least. I thought I understood the purpose of the prompt better. I lacked details on how the issue connected to me which discouraged me to keep writing. I felt embarrassed that my peers had reviewed my work. It was hard to accept that I don’t always have strong writing. I do appreciate the feedback they gave me which allowed me to rewrite everything in a way that would address the prompt and would be better understood.
During this semester, I have finished writing three different types of paper, which are summary and response essay, rhetorical analysis essay and argumentative essay. At first, I didn’t have a brief idea of how to write those essays, and I felt confused. However, with the help of professor, and the “They Say I Say” book, I could continue to study and knew what to do with my paper. I still consider writing as a complex task to do, I have to do a lot of preparations before I start, such as searching information on the internet or in the library, having an outline, writing a draft and so on. When I start writing, I have to take care of the grammar, spelling of the words, and add enough figurative language; after I have finished, I should have a works cited page and check again about the grammar and spelling. It is a tiring process to write an essay, but I try my best to enjoy it.
Over the course of the semester, we have studied a variety of styles of writing, from the perspective paper to the
Writing my life story was an overwhelmingly positive experience for me. This story was an important story for me to tell because it is about the day that I met my sponsor child. That experience of meeting my sponsor child was an experience that changed my life because I was able to physically see the boy that I have been pouring into. This experience also took my relationship with my sponsor child to another level because I was there in Zimbabwe Africa building my relationship with him in person. The recentness of the experience, and personal effect this event had on me helped make this writing experience positive. The quite library and very studious environment that I put myself in, and the process of
