So for my Serving Society project I got the wonderful chance to be a part of the Sanare Ministry, which goes around to some of the local old folks homes and puts on a mini concert for the residents. I truly enjoyed the experience in more ways than one! I think one of my absolute favorite things was seeing their faces light up watching the performances. In Dr. Dunn’s article she spoke about how it is a hard thing for many people to truly SEE others and for feeling guilty when we can’t do anything to help their suffering. I can definitely understand how not being able to physically do anything to help can feel like you are failing them as a fellow human being. Every time I drive by someone who is begging for money or food, I always feel devastated when I am unable to do something to help them. Whether it’s the fact that I don’t have any cash on me or that the cash I do have is for something else and is technically my mother’s money.
I always try to help when I can, but it is still not as often as I would like. However, I have learned that sometimes even if you can’t help them by giving them money of food, if you just stop to talk with them and acknowledge their presence and existence it makes them so happy. Just like in Dunn’s lecture when she tells about how they attended a Sunday worship service during their time in Gutuletu and the guest speaker asked everyone to turn and to see the people standing near them, and everyone looked at the students, making them feel seen! To
From experience in feeding those in need I feel that not all being fed or helped should be. Many have brought the situation of poverty upon themselves. It saddens me that a lot of people with families to support choose to spend a large portion of their money on beer and cigarettes instead of clothing and food.
Acts of service always created a desire in me to help make people’s lives better. People often put forth their best when
It realty shouldn't take much put of a person to help others. Although the video didn't show one of life's greatest friend (Karma) which is basically. What goes around comes back around. This would have been a great scene to add in the video. To show the audience that helping others will always return to you. Instead it showed a man that wanted to give to people and did not want anything in return. This video took a total turn that I wasn't expecting. This is a story of a kind and humble man. That wants nothing in return but peace. This message could also be trying to encourage others to become more generous. But we all know in today's society , this is pretty much nonexistence. There is so much violence going on in today's world. So many people want to be the chief and filled with pride. Then there are some that just wants to be heard. But the High Seat is not looking around to see the bigger picture, and how it is affecting families. Plenty countries in this world needs help with educational funding, housing development, and employment opportunities. We all know that the government ,or High Seat has the will to help the countries and communities with their financial struggles. It all starts off with basic foundation of success. No education, no future career goals, no life. Instead very few people are taking matters into their own hands, such as the man in the video. Doesn't really look like he
This past summer, I acquired an internship at Baldwin and Lyons, an insurance company in Indianapolis. Every Wednesday during my internship, a couple of employees and I would participate in a prodigious community service project, Meals on Wheels. Throughout the three months that I worked at Baldwin and Lyons, I got acquainted with some of the individuals whom we delivered to. These inspiring individuals were so grateful and appreciative that we took time out of our day to volunteer to do such a service. One elderly woman who we delivered to would sing to us as she came to the front door “good meals, good meals, good meals.” She is one woman that I will never forget. First going into this, I was elated knowing I was I getting out of the
I wasn’t aware of the importance of doing good for others, until recently that I witnessed it with my own eyes. It all started when was at Chicago, a random man helped out a homeless man and bought him some food. I noticed as I was in line that the cashier then gave the helping man a free choice to pick something he wanted due to the action he did. After that day I began to make an attempt at helping out more and being a better person in general.
I don’t think many people truly take the time to appreciate the kindness they are given. For others, I believe they should understand how meaningful their compassion is.
On the last Thursday of every month, a few of the Young Adults from Harvest City Church volunteer to go to Carrall Gospel Mission and serve the homeless at downtown Eastside. These people are made up of drug addicts, ex-convicts, prostitutes and people with mental health problems. First, We have a short sharing session by the leaders of the mission, and afterwards we serve the homeless dinner. The purpose of this mission is not only to engage the impoverished, but also to give back to the community. Listening to the homeless talk about their lives, I have learned to be more content with what I have and not to take anything for granted. Moreover, I have learned that reaching out to others can have a lasting impact on their lives and also on
I think that maybe, if I help them, that they would want to help other people too. One of my tasks
It is dehumanizing to make assumptions and determine how much help other people are entitled when the people’s lifestyles are not accounted for at all. The givers cannot stipulate another person’s worth without knowing the person. While one can only give within reasons, there are more that one can do to endorse their support for people in need or humanitarian organization(s). Helping cannot be based off of how much someone deserves. Givers need to give to the best of their
I have always had an interest in helping others, which led me to join the National Charity League when I was in 7th grade and stayed until I graduated high school. It is a mother/daughter charity organization with that aims to help local philanthropies. Throughout my six years of involvement, I was able to volunteer at 19 different charitable organizations throughout the Coachella Valley. The philanthropies I predominantly worked with were the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission and Gilda’s Club. The Coachella Valley Rescue Mission is a shelter for the homeless and I predominately did two things for them, serving/cooking food and fundraising. Often, when I would serve food to the homeless, they would talk to me about their lives and how they ended
Throughout society we have always been told to help those in need no matter what the situation might be. But these days it seems as if the only reason people help those in need is because they usually want something in return such as social approval and recognition for their help or if they don’t help they’ll face legal consequences due to their lack of action such as seeing crime occurring and not responding. According to Peter Singer we have a duty to render aid to others, and I agree with that because if that was you in that person’s position you would want someone to help you. The origin of this duty derives from our basic principles as humans to help those that need help if we have the ability to do so. Also because everyone will
Today, I have beholden to a mercy that Jesus has for us. When I drove back to my home from my church yesterday, I saw homeless people in the entrance of highway. At the moment, I just passed out naturally without any filling, but an invitation was intentionally arising in my mind. The invitation was that there is not compassion to other people in my mind, and, in other word, my mind is too hardened to have mercy or love to others. A word of Jesus was coming up that ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ (Matthew 25:45)
As a kid I was always fond of donating clothes, or helping out at my local food bank, because reaching out made me feel good and put a smile upon the ones I was giving a helping hand to and myself. Growing up, my parents have instilled within me to always give aid to those who are in hardship, because if we are fortunate enough to have everything we have ever needed, then why can’t others have the same. My drive for assisting others expanded when I joined the Interact club. I have been in Interact Club for two years, and now I am treasurer of this group which gives back to the community and other communities as well. In the Interact Club, we have donated countless of items, ranging from food to clothes to books and much more. Through the Interact
Many may be quick to say that learning to help the unfortunate can 't be taught after a certain point in life, or that only the rich and fortunate ones can donate. In an article written by
I have found that over the years, sometimes, people just would like someone to be kind or nice to them, sometimes to just speak a kind word or two to them. It is amazing when you truly go out and seek to find the lost, just how many people there truly is out there that have Never known what Jesus and His love are really all about. Sometimes when I feel down or depressed and just not having a good day, I go and look for someone that I know for a fact has less than we do and maybe are homeless. And I try to talk to them sometimes all it takes is a smile and just a friendly word to gain their curiosity. Then they do not mind talking to you.
