They in turn could choose to take this information and be successful or to not utilize it to the fullest potential. I want to be the type of teacher that helps kids to reach their potential no matter what they have been told in the past or how low their self-esteem may be. I want to teach kids about the wonderful opportunities that lie ahead for them. I strive to treat all students fairly and to hold their attention and interest at the same time. I hope that students will understand the importance of a good education in the life after school. I hope to help raise self-esteem by using longer wait times and constructive criticism. The students in my classroom will be able to work together and accomplish more than just “busy work”. They will learn valuable lessons about themselves and their potential. I hope at the beginning of each school year to prepare my student to be ready ad willing to learn. In order to do this I must capture their interest and attention. They will need to think critically and creatively.

As a child playing school with the neighborhood children, I had always dreamed of becoming a teacher. Since the first day of kindergarten, watching the teacher teach us how to do basic things like counting, writing, and reading is what interested me in teaching. Throughout my elementary and secondary education I became even more interested in the teaching field. I thought that being a teacher would be the best thing in the world because a teacher has an immense amount of knowledge. Now I am in college where I am currently studying to be a secondary mathematics teacher. Ever since I was a child, I looked up to all my teachers and was passionate about reading, writing, and teaching my peers. This has made me want to pursue a career as a teacher. I have always wanted to contribute back to my community and make a positive difference for the future of children. Teaching will allow me to motivate students, as well as become a mentor, which will enable me to enhance my communication and leadership skills. Being a goal oriented individual, I would be suitable to train children in required subjects with care and concern. Continually, I want to make a difference in the lives of as many students as I can, such as a child struggling with low self-esteem and/or problems at home. Becoming a teacher will allow me to inspire and help kids realise their true potential. Many of the teachers that I have had throughout my education have become my role models, allowing me to have a positive outlook on life and realise that nothing is impossible if we try hard enough. This has made me want to follow in their footsteps to become an educator.

My desire to teach really derives from those who really connected me with the love for educating others. The connection I made with my fourth grade teacher really encouraged me to seek a change for the better in my life and help others do the same. For she turned out to be one of my best friends who would watch out and made sure to tell me when something was not quite right with me. The connection I had with her made me feel like I was a part of her family, and could do anything with her support. The way she always had time to listen to my drama or play games with my friends and I created this idea that maybe I could be that person for other kids. In life, many variables are ever changing. The only constant unchanging variable in my life is my love and passion for education. Teaching has been engrained in me since before I can remember. My entire family is comprised of educators and I have no doubt that it is what I was put on this earth to do. Many people have asked me, “Why teaching? You can do so much better than that,” and my response is simple; I want to wake up every morning and love what I do and in the process make an impact on a child’s life for the rest of his or her life.

I want to give children a better chance at a future. In an article titled A Love Supreme: Reflections on Why We Continue to Teach, there is a man named Raymond Roy-Peace and it says “His passion for youth has led him to develop curriculums for mentorship programs, conduct youth engagement workshops and develop teacher trainings” (Roy-Peace, 2015). I want to do things like what Raymond did for his students. I want to be a role model and a positive influence. I want to lead my students in the best direction I can for their future and I want them to leave my class at the end of the year with more than the curriculum they are required to know.

Teaching is a career that takes patience, passion, and desire. Since I was about ten years old, my passion has resided in teaching, specifically special education teaching. When my aunt adopted my twin cousins and found out they were autistic, I never would have expected the hard road she would have to go down in terms of their education. My motivation to teach has always been and always will be my cousins. Without them, I would have never found the desire and love I have for special education children. A quote by Magic Johnson that I feel describes why I want to be a special education teacher perfectly is, “All kids need is a little help, a little hope, and someone who believes in them.” Special Ed children, no matter how they must be taught or how much they can comprehend, have the same rights to an education as any other child.

Being an educator, in my opinion, is the most important job in the world, because every decision matters. Through my experiences in the classroom, I have developed a teaching philosophy that will be implemented into my future classrooms. I truly believe that being a student and a teacher go hand in hand. I am continually striving to learn new things, to become a better educator. My main goal is to be a teacher that motivates and inspires my students.

Teachers have the role of shaping students for tomorrow. They help them academically, personally, and socially. I cannot think of any other career that would be as rewarding as teaching. A teacher has the opportunity everyday to change a student’s life. One of the reasons I want to become an educator is because I want to have a positive influence on a student’s life. I think in today’s society it’s crucial for students to feel like they have a positive role model. I have seen what a large impact teachers have made on their student’s lives. Learn to Teach, Learn to Learn. / Use the past to teach the future ( That is my philosophy)

If the best of us will be teachers and the rest something else, then I hope the best of us will also be students. I believe we are all students and I expect I will learn as much from my students as they will learn from me. I hope more than anything though, that my students will value the simple act of obtaining knowledge more than worrying about getting every graded detail correct. If a student cannot enjoy the learning process, they are not going to truly learn the subject content. There are certainly distinct pieces of knowledge that all students need. Students may not always enjoy absorbing these pieces of knowledge, but hopefully there will be individualized interests that make the process easier. I

As I continue to progress through my teaching journey, I have had the opportunity to do a lot of self-evaluation and dig deeper into what makes a great teacher. Since then there has always been a quote that has stuck with me, stated by Seymour Simon, an award winning children’s science author. “I'm more interested in arousing enthusiasm in kids than in teaching the facts. The facts may change, but that enthusiasm for exploring the world will remain with them the rest of their lives.” I truly believe that as an educator it is more important to teach them how learning can change your life as compared to drilling facts that can possible change. Growing up, I was the daughter and granddaughter of excellent teachers. I always saw how dedicated my mother and grandmother were to their profession. I saw first-hand the late night grading, the parent-teacher conferences, and all the joys and burdens of being a teacher. So, without a doubt I knew I wanted to experience the same joy of being a teacher and being able to inspire students to learn, just like my mother and grandmother.
