In order for a task to correspond correctly with ones goal, all characteristics take a toll from having a team that strives to be successful and as individuals themselves. When leading a team to achieve collective success I find that for myself it’s huge to have my top three sub factors leading me on. In order to complete a task as a leader having a high compliance does indeed succeed, allowing accuracy, thoughtfulness, and efficiency to cooperate in my favor. I believe that thoughtfulness is my biggest sub factor in this particular instance because it does help me take other peoples views into account so I am then able to make a valid decision on a topic. As group leader I have to set forth our goals and listen to the group. Each challenge has a loophole, I firmly believe this in life and work, there is always something you can accomplish together to make that challenge conquered, and relations as a group is the first key to success. (Chapter 2 Pg. 22) As previously stated how social relations are important, that in particular ties into the factors that create successful performance. The overall learning process deciphers me from a good or bad leader, our group performance in my eyes is either good or bad, and bad is unacceptable. The leader must be sure to take the group dynamics into consideration. It is important to make everyone involved feel that their needs are important. For the project to be a success, everyone participating must feel as if they are contributing and that they are being valued equally.
Team work is needed in order to succeed. It is said in the guard world that “you are only as strongest as your weakest link” and I couldn’t agree more. That gave me the inspiration to help others when they were struggling as a leader.

Throughout my time in college, I spent a lot of time working in teams, either for group projects, or for the extracurricular activities that I was involved in. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to develop myself as a group leader through my work in the Cavalier Marching Band, where I was able to work my way up to the position of Drill Instructor. During the group work in the course it was apparent that a few traits stood out that would help a leader effectively lead the team. First, the leader must understand the project and be able to communicate that to the team members to improve commitment and ensure quality. Second, the team should have common goals as we set forth in our team charter. This provides measurable metrics which will help identify if the team is effective. Third, accountability is a priority from the very beginning. Everyone needs to know their part and the consequences if they are unable to meet the expectations set out by the group. Lastly, the leader must be able to create an environment of open communication to enable team members to give and receive feedback that will enhance the quality of the project.

As Nanjundeswaraswamy & Swamy (2014, p.57) explains, effective leaders need to balance the drive to achieve a task with managing relationships. Therefore, it is essential for good leadership to not only focus on the task but develop, motivate and empower team members to strive for the achievement of task goals.
As we begin to form our self-managed work teams this week for the final report and presentation due at the end of session, I begin to reflect on the situations where I have had to be part of a group. Accordingly, past experiences have led me to form a generally negative viewpoint with regards teamwork in both the education and workplace setting. In most situations, group work is facilitated by a single leader responsible for ensuring that all members complete their work to the required standard. Nevertheless, this has lead to situations where team members often become unproductive or dysfunctional. For one thing, conflict – whether it be task or relational – arises between team members and leaders when they begin to feel that they are subject to the leader’s authoritarian behaviour or scrutiny. For another, the leaders responsible for the management of the group begin to feel underappreciated or dissatisfied with the levels of task productivity generated by group members. In stating this, I have experienced both sides of single leadership team management – with mostly disastrous results – where negative team performance ultimately reflected on assessment grades.
