On the Saturday of October 22, 2016, I went to Zahra’s apartment after a lunch meeting near campus. I took public transportation through bus route 24 then route 15 to East 12th Avenue right off of Colfax Avenue. It took a little over an hour to get to Zahra’s apartment, luckily because her apartment is only five minutes walk from the bus stop. Zahra and her husband both came down to welcome me and let me in. Then we had a conversation about both of our lives and cultures in the living room for about two hours. At the end of the visit, she was surprised that I took public transportation to her home and was nice to walk me out of her apartment complex and told me how to get back to the bus stop.
The trip back and forth with public transportation was common to me, because I live without a car for the first three years I was in the United States. When I started my first job in Chick-fil-A, I had to spend an hour and half to travel to the store that would only take fifteen minutes if driving. That was the first job opportunity given to me in the United States and I could not appreciate more, so I took the bus for the first week. After travelling there for three interviews and for first couple days at work, I told my parents that I could not make it without a car and they eventually bought me one. With that experience, I really understand how difficult it is to try to be on time when you have to make a transfer in the middle, and how the long trip on the bus or light rail can
The United State has always been weak in public transportation and mass transit tools. California was once supposed to be different and revolutionized. Trolleys connecting the suburbs to the city and business districts was the main reason why cities expanded vertically. These mass transit tools organized the transits in an extremely environmentally friendly way. But the venue of cars and the thought of independence flattered americans pushing them to each buy a car, synonym of their independence. Now the trains and connecting public transportations have practically disappeared and are irrelevant.
In general, everyone needs to go to places everyday whether it is work, visiting a family member, or just touring around interesting places. In order to go to these places, a person needs money. Public transportation costs a lot. Some people won’t be able
For my ethnographic fieldwork, I decided to do my research on the Jewish culture. I interviewed a friend of mine at her house, which is the field site I decided to work in. To protect her identity I changed her name to Rebecca. As soon as I got to her house I notice there was a small piece of metal on the side of her doorpost with hebrew text written on it. I enter the house and she greeted me and took me to her living room.In her living room I noticed she had a tray of bite size cookies for us and a Snapple drink. The cookies were sweet and they did not have strong odor. My friend wore black slacks a white blouse and a star necklace around her neck. After a while, her brother and father came in and I noticed they had a little cap on the top of their heads. I asked her questions about her religion and culture.
Moreover, public transportation is mainly common in means of transportation in and out of NYC due to the convenience, cost, and efficiency of public transportation. It has become more easily accessible due to having subways in nearly every other block, which is cheaper and faster. Public transportation is faster than driving into the city at times since it escapes the traffic on roads since it is underneath. Public transportation contains buses, trains, and light rails as well. Once again, automobile and the city of tomorrow can coexist, but it is not ideal in today’s
People will often tell you that they want to be rich or famous when they grow older, how will that be possible without the proper education and schooling? Many people dream of being an entrepreneur or a lawyer and they believe that it is possible to be one of those things out of thin air. It’s not. Often times most businesses want to see a degree or a diploma to even consider you for a job. However, there are many advantages of attending college. The advantages of attending college is never ending but can include incessant opportunities.
We sat down at her dining room table with a roommate’s computer. She closed her eyes and opened up the email. What we saw was a relief, making me think, for a moment, that my assistance was not needed, my trip had been superfluous. The email was friendly in tone and made it clear that she would not necessarily have to make large payments right away:
It’s been a little over a month since I got to America from Mexico. I live in New York City now. It’s nothing as I expected it to be people in the city are very rude, one day I was walking to work which is a clothing factory a teenage boy, who looked very wealthy told me, “go back where you come from” and “you don’t belong here.” That’s when I met the nicest woman I have ever met, her name’s Jane. She saw everything that happened, she knew I was scared of the boy and that’s when she gave me this flyer. She told me to come to her organization meeting at this church where she would help me adjust to New York. Surprisingly, the meeting was during a time I didn’t work and I heard a couple of the girls that I work with chatting about it. So, I
Most of these people have cars or other forms of transportation. She points out that when unemployment rates rise and the gas prices increase, “privileged commuters” turn to public transportation. She suggests that they are white, but who is to say they also could be people of color. There is also the possibility of location, location, location as a drawback. The bus might not have effective ways to make stops to accommodate many potential riders, leaving them without many options to get places but to have a car.
Why go out of state if the University of Minnesota (U of M) has the right amount of education I need? I believe the U of M is the best choice of a college for me. They have well priced expenses, a large amount of clubs, and they have good medical schools. Overall, the U of M has many choices for me to choose from that will build my education.
On April 2nd, 2016 I had the opportunity to talk to a very special person to me, my neighbor of 20 years. Her name is L.T, she is 74 years of age and she is extremely open and friendly. L.T invited me over to her house around 5:00 p.m. to spend time with her and of course I accepted. According to chapter 11 Living arrangements and social interactions L.T housing patterns are independent living due to the fact that her house is already paid for and she is the owner of it. We talked for a total of 3 hours and I enjoyed every minute of it. There were many topics we discussed such as her previous husband, new husband, jobs, and most importantly her children. According to chapter 9 The importance of social supports: family, friends, neighbors, and
My story begins when my mom and I moved from Crafton, near Pittsburgh, to my grandparents’ house in Schwenksville at the beginning of first grade. In Crafton, there were not a lot children in my neighborhood; therefore, my wonderful mother and heart rending loneliness were my only friends. Fortunately, in my grandparent’s huge neighborhood, there were three amazing girls that became my best friends. However, those girls were not enough to combat my loneliness. At times these girls were mean to me, but my caring mother was there to lift my spirits. My mother was understanding and always knew what to say when I was lonely. As the story continues my life will hit an unexpected turn when I accepted a last minute invitation from a friend to attend

The best place on campus is undoubtedly the Jaguar Student Activities Center or JSAC. Walking in from the hot, muggy air into the breezeway, a plethora of things is going on at once: immediate relief from the heat because of the air conditioner, delicious smells wafting from the food court, and student and/or faculty events. It is a great location to meet new people and experiment socially in a safe environment. Despite all the activity, the JSAC is a relaxed space created for, and by students and it is a great space to spend time in between and after classes (JSAC). Unfortunately, even though Augusta University has such a diverse student body, people tend to seek out those that are similar to them ethnically and culturally. This can lead some to feel trapped in their social circles, lost in the crowd, or alone and uncomfortable in a new environment. Adrienne Rich describes this feeling as “bumping my way against glassy panes… gathering myself up… then again taking off” (63). In this quote, Rich is comparing herself to a bee that has been trapped within her house and is searching for an exit. She previously describes the trapped bee as “looking for what it needs, just as I am, and, just like me, it has gotten trapped in a place where it cannot fulfill its own life” (63). Just as Rich feels trapped within the confines of her limited view of feminism, some students feel trapped within their social circles and limited by perceived social boundaries. However, the JSAC
There are many instances in our daily routines where transportation is a requirement and not a luxury. In the first place, some of us are unable to drive or even to own an automobile. Public transportation can usually be accessed but when you reside in the suburbs such an option may not always be on the table. A trip to the airport to board an aircraft should not be a stressful experience and with minicabs in Enfield Chase, it won’t be. You could ask a friend to provide you with a ride, however, that may not always be an option either.
Public transportation is serious need of a massive overhaul in this nation. We are in desperate need to catch up to the European standard of public transportation in this country. In Europe, citizens can travel across cities, bodies of water, and even counties with their state of the art public transportation system. Europeans are not nearly as reliant on cars and oil as the United States is because they have the much more practical option of taking the transportation provided to them by the government to where ever they need to go. They have set a model that the United States needs to strive for and meet in the near future.
