The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People otherwise known as the NAACP was founded in 1909 by a group of multiracial civil rights campaigners. The primary reason for their upcoming was due to the riot race of 1908. The NAACP would only fight back in one way though and this was nonviolent resistance. Which meant that whatever way the people of the NAACP were treated they would not lay a finger on their enemy. The NAACP has had two primary court cases that put them on top this was Brown v. Board of Education and Morgan v. Virginia. Morgan v. Virginia in 1946 challenged segregation on interstate bus services. The NAACP wanted african americans to be allowed to ride the bus with whites too. They were already allowed to ride …show more content…
Board of Education in 1951 declared state laws establishing separate schools for black and white students to be unconstitutional. The Brown v. Board of Education act would allow african americans to go to college with the whites, before this act african americans could go to school but not to college and the education that they had was horrific. The books that they used were that of the white schools hand me downs, so there for the things that they were learning were not up to date and if the teachers were african american they had around the same education if any. The act would also make James Meredith known as the first african american to attend the all white school of Ole Miss. James Meredith would also attend marches and other types of peaceful protest held by the NAACP. The Brown v. Board of Education act would change the life for many african americans. Brown v. Board of Education and Morgan v. Virginia were two of the most known acts that went to the Supreme Court because of the NAACP. The NAACP was and still is one of the biggest civil rights protest groups. They still get into the issues that we have today such as the african americans getting shot by the police. The NAACP has saved the lives and education of many african americans world
The NAACP was established in 1909 in New York City by a gathering of bi-racial activists.
However it has to be considered, that the African Americans and the organisations themselves were more important in the advancement of blacks gaining their civil rights. The African Americans, always seemed to have a strong leader, all the way back to Booker. T Washington, who was one of the first people to lead the blacks in their civil rights movement in 1865. It
The NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, an independent legal aid group, argues in court on behalf of the NAACP and other civil-rights groups. Along with the NAACP, it was instrumental in helping to bring about the Supreme Court's ruling (1954) against segregated public education in the landmark Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kans. Case (Spartacus 1). The strategy shifted after Brown, however, to "direct action"--primarily bus boycotts, sit-ins, freedom rides, and similar movements-- from 1955 to 1965. In part this was the unintended result of the local authorities' attempt to outlaw and harass the mainstream civil rights organizations throughout the Deep South. The State of Alabama had effectively barred the NAACP from operating in Alabama by requiring it to give the state a list of its members. In the South of the 1950s, that would have exposed every member of the NAACP to retaliation, from being fired to being firebombed. While the United States Supreme Court ultimately reversed the order, for a few years in the mid 1950s
Many organizations helped to throughout the Civil Rights Movement. Many of these organizations were lead by black activist seeking reform. One of the most successful organizations is the NAACP. This stands for the National Association of Colored Advancement. Roy Wilkins was the head of the NAACP during this time (Civil 909). The NAACP purpose was to eliminate racial prejudice by removing racial
Almost 500,000 Americans of all races are members of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the largest civil rights organization in the world and probably the largest secular citizens action agency in the nation. Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the oldest civil rights organization as well as the most powerful and the most respected today. The NAACP is the national spokesperson for black Americans and other minorities, and for those who support civil rights objectives in America. Organized in virtually every city and town where black Americans reside, the NAACP both articulates the grievances of black Americans and protects their
The NAACP made an impact in South Carolina by the mission of ensuring that everyone has political, educational, social, and economic equality. They wanted to challenge federal anti hanging laws and fair housing laws. Also, they supported the crucial Supreme Court case Brown vs The Board of Education which desegregated schools. The NAACP helped have a social equality by civil rights, freedom of speech, property rights, and equal access to social goods and services. They also helped with the anti lynching and fair housing rights by supporting the Supreme Court decision on stop hanging everywhere in the United States and fair housing rights for enforcing the new fair house laws. Also, the NAACP helped with educational equality by supporting the
On February 12, 1909, the NAACP, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, was founded. The NAACP was founded in response to the 1908 race riot in Springfield, Illinois and the terrible practice known as lynching. Their goal was to secure the rights, for all people, guaranteed to people in the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments in the United States Constitution. Even though some of the most important wins in court happened when Charles Hamilton Houston was the leader, his student, Thurgood Marshall, won some important ones too ("NAACP Legal History", NAACP.org). This essay is going to focus on some of the court cases that were fought when Marshall was in charge ( Janken, Kenneth R. "The Civil Rights Movement: 1919-1960s")
During the start of the African American civil rights movement, Africans Americans still were faced with Jim Crow laws which segregated them from whites. Under the Jim Crow laws African Americans had different schools, bathrooms, trains, buses and many other things that were separated from the white population. The case, Plessy v. Ferguson went through the U.S. Supreme Court and turned out to make a legal policy “separate but
The above articles and book outline the NAACP involvement in the civil rights movement during the mid-1930s and 1940s. They provided an excellent historiographical analysis of NAACP’s legal actions conducted during this period. Ultimately, these author’s articles and book supports the argument that the actions of the NAACP in the 1930s and 1940s impacted or contributed to the overall outcome of the civil rights movement in the
In addition, the NAACP also relies on help from the branches of government and attempts to influence public policy throughout this process. The NAACP brings cases to the Supreme Court, submits Amicus Curiae Briefs, and litigation. The NAACP brings cases to court that involves a violation of a citizens rights, in hopes that this violation will be resolved. The NAACP is infamous for the Brown v Board of Education case which addressed segregated schools throughout the United States. This appeal to the Supreme Court, not only brought a solution to this issue, it also allowed the NAACP to influence the public policy by adjusting this policy. In Litigation cases, the NAACP sues against a person, organization, or group of people with the intention
In the late 1940s, lawyers for the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) argued a series of cases before the supreme court. In the Brown vs. Board Education of Topeka, Kansas court case, the court ruled on May 17, 1954 that having separate schools for blacks and whites was very unconstitutional. Imagine going to a school about 2 miles away from your house when there is a school a couple of blocks from you house but you can't since it's a white school. That's what many African American children faced.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was one of the first and most
One big organization that fought for civil rights was The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) founded in 1909. Among this group were two men named Charles Hamilton Houston and Thurgood Marshall went through the education road to get to equality. They believed that the best way to go about ending Jim Crow Laws was to use the education field. Marshall fought against Maryland for black students so that they could be allowed into the Law school if they were qualified and not just based on their skin color. He included the 14th amendment in his argument and the Court decided to allow black students into the University. The way that this helps is that African Americans can learn how to operate in a court room and later on down the road support civil rights in the court room - one of the more important places for civil rights. Another example was when an African American student tried to apply to the law school
In the 1900s civil rights groups like the NAACP, Southern Negro Youth Congress, Student Organization for Black Unity and so many others used movements to address the problems African Americans face. Some of these groups fought for economic, political, and social issues so African Americans can have a say so in what happens in their communities. These groups fought for rights such as voting, unions, school desegregation, affirmative action etc. The many issues sometime we still fight for today, mostly in the justice institutions.
The Civil Rights Movement gave blacks equality through voting and desegregation but there are many people that are racist. Dr. King fought by leading protest, and marches to bring awareness to the American society. Through the era of Civil Rights blacks were beaten, hosed, and killed for being the color that they were. The movement was success and is a major standing point in American history. Within in the past year police officers have had altercations with unarmed civilians that ended in many unnecessary deaths. Many organizations have been created to protest the police brutality, violence and racism within the legal system. NAACP and the Black Lives Matter movement all have specific things that they are fighting for in many different ways. Some organizations have specific things that they do to assess issues. Multiple groups come together to solve problems in the black, urban community.
