Narcissistic Personality Disorder is a complicated disorder which has many implications for how one might act and think of themselves. It is categorized as a personality disorder in which the person thinks highly of themselves, that they are a superior being. They are often envious or jealous of others, lack empathy, and carry with themselves a sense of entitlement (Maniacci, 2007). Someone with Narcissistic Personality Disorder may expect special treatment from others. For example, they may have no problem cutting in line to ask a question but expect everyone else to wait their turn (Funder, 2016). The DSM-5 mentions other traits or behaviors used in the diagnosis of Narcissistic Personality Disorder, such as interpersonal exploitation (using and taking advantage of those around you), being preoccupied with fantasies of ideal love, unlimited power or success, and beauty, and the need for excessive admiration from others (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Subtypes of Narcissistic Personality Disorder. To be even more specific, various subtypes of narcissism have been suggested, most importantly the covert/vulnerable presentation and the overt/grandiose presentation. The latter is what is typically focused on, and what has been explained above. However, covert narcissism is nothing to ignore.
