Nantahala Lake is dam-created lake or reservoir located at 3,000 feet above sea level in western North Carolina. Accessible via Wayah Road, the lake is a 45 minute drive from Franklin, NC or about an hour from Bryson City via NC Hwy 74 and Wayah Road. In 1929, Nantahala Power and Light Company was organized as part of the nation's rural electrification program. The abundance of water along with the terrain of the region made it ideal for hydroelectric power generation. The lake is regulated and maintained by Duke Power and is a major source of hydroelectric power to the region. (7) Nantahala is located at 3,000 feet in the Nantahala National Forest. The lake was created in 1942 by Nantahala Power to provide electricity for war efforts. With 42 miles (68 km) of shoreline, the lake offers recreational opportunities at Nantahala that include swimming, boating, skiing, and many other activities. Fishing is another popular activity at the lake. Fisherman target largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, trout, salmon, catfish, and many different species of panfish (please see photo of Lake Nantahala below).
Regarded as one of the southeast’s largest lakes, Lake Hartwell is located on the Savannah River, bordering Georgia and South Carolina. This man-made reservoir was created by the Hartwell Dam, which extends for seven miles below the confluence of the Tugaloo and Seneca Rivers. Lake Hartwell is a very popular recreational lake, stretching for 49 miles up the Tugaloo River and 45 miles up the Seneca River at normal pool elevation, comprising 56,000 acres of water and 962 miles of beautiful shores. Named for the American Revolutionary War figure Nancy Hart, a devout patriot and lover of liberty, who lived in the Georgia frontier, Lake Hartwell was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers between 1955 and 1963. The lake serves several functions, including flood risk management, water supply, navigation, hydropower production and fish and wildlife protection.
Organisations such as the NICA make sure that the green land is healthy and maintained as well as the Health of the mangroves. Mangroves are a very important part of Lake Doonella as they feed many animals and filter the water so the it's clear and clean for the animals living there. : Larchwood Lake may not ever be the same again. The story about Larchwood Lake is not that uncommon. Without doing extensive research into possible things that could occur by lowering the lake level, the Larchwood Lake Homeowner’s Association destroyed the very thing they were trying to protect. Carelessness and poor planning are not the only root causes however. There are a number of reasons that led to the degradation of Larchwood Lake that happen to relate to more macro level environmental issues. Those reasons are poorly designed environmental policy created by the E.P.A., poor understanding of lake ecology by the managers of the land, and false confidence in poorly planned ideas. By looking at how these factors contributed to the degradation of the lake, hopefully we will be able to make more ecological sound decisions in the future.
The hydroelectric dam provides low cost power to numerous farmsteads and small towns of the expanded region. The lake has also provided for some of the fines walleye and salmon fishing within North Dakota.

Before the United States became an independent nations, Onondaga Lake was the center of the Iroquois Confederacy. The lakes water was crystal clear.The surrounding land was very clean and pristine. All of the forests, streams and creeks were healthy and well.Eventually European settlers came to the area. With them they brought new technology and rapidly made industries grow and develop. Industry and rapid urbanization of Syracuse impacted the surrounding areas because the more the people came, the more it got polluted, many attractions came along like a amusement park and shopping,many job opportunities, newer industries and a bigger population.
(Our History, n.d.) -With this increase, the TVA decided to build coal-fired steam plants and by 1955, coal became the TVA source of power over the hydroelectric dams. The TVA needed to build more plants and to keep up and went back to Washington to secure federal funding to issue bonds. -The 1960s brought low electric rates and these rates were about the lowest in that nation and the TVA brought even more power with larger and more generating power units. -A new option came about in 1966 with the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Browns Ferry, Alabama. (Our History, n.d.) The first unit at Browns Ferry was completed in 1974 and the building of two more units would continue on and unit 2 completed in 1975 and unit 3 completed in 1977. The TVA needed to become more competitive and to do so they look at becoming more efficient and improving the productivity with needed costs cut. -With the help of Marvin Runyon, chairman, laid down a foundation that would provide stability of rates that would end of lasting for the next decade. The State Water Commission provides many laws and policies that citizens and businesses in the state must follow. Also, something that I found very interesting was that the Water Commission is involved in a variety of special water projects. One project that I will focus on is the Dam Safety project. The purpose of this project is to provide a program to minimize the risk to life and property associated with the potential failure of dams in North Dakota. The State Water Commission conducts dam inspections in order to identify any maintenance repairs that should be done. Every summer for the past few years, I have been constantly on the gorgeous glittering waters of Lake Allatoona. I have experienced everything from boating to tubing and even jumping off of double decker docks. It’s hard to say goodbye to the waters for another year until Memorial Day. Even though I only see a small but beautiful portion of Lake Allatoona, the “Tri-State Water Wars” are still a large problem for this blossoming community surrounding Lake Allatoona.
Being a student athlete at the nearby University, located in the heart of Bellingham, I myself use the lake once, if not twice a day for rowing practice. Considering my constant presence, I have become quite disappointed in the water quality of the lake as well as the debris which roams the murky waters.
Lake Tahoe, an enormous expanse of clear, blue, fresh water surrounded by meadows and dense forests and rimmed by snow-capped peaks, is one of the world's great scenic and ecological wonders. Tahoe's water is world famous for its amazing clarity. Even today, one can see objects 70 feet below the surface, a clarity matched almost nowhere in the world. The Tahoe Basin had a slowly evolving and essentially balanced environment for thousands of years, with surrounding forests, meadows and marshlands helping to maintain the clarity and purity of the lake.

We don’t have to burn fuels to cause pollution… pollution free. Hydroelectric developments don’t generate toxic by-products. With an average lifetime of 50 to 100 years, hydroelectricity developments are a long term. It can easily be upgraded to incorporate more recent technologies and have very low operating and maintenance cost. Dams are designed to last decades and so can so contribute to the generation of electricity for many years and decades. Hydroelectricity is the cheapest way to provide energy. Once a dam is constructed, electricity can be produced at a constant rate. Large dams can be useful for flood control. It’s a clean energy source. It does not produce green house gases. When a hydroelectricity water storage dam is built, the water can be used as drinking water and also a recreational purpose such as fishing and boating. The Lakes End is an incredible resource for lake-goers whether you need to rent a jet-ski for the ride, access to the marina for your beauty, need a bite to eat or a place to rest your head after a day of sunshine and water.
