Light pollution is a comparatively unknown and yet relatively serious problem that is constantly growing. Because of the way most lights are designed they throw light not just down, where it's needed, but also up and to the sides. This causes unnecessary light to be cast that can disorient animals as well as throw off their normal routines.
The purpose of my interest group, Natural Night, is to raise awareness about light pollution and to educate the local and state officials as well as the public to the effects of this unnatural phenomena. Natural Night would support laws that would help control light pollution. At least in the beginning, this group would focus on north Florida's Atlantic coast, as I am familiar with the area and feel confident that I would be able to gain support there due to the residents that are deeply concerned about how the sea

There are also national groups that meet annually to discuss how to prevent light pollution. A representative from Natural Night would attend and share what has been done to help in our area and discover what others are doing. To inform government officials the best course of action is still to simply write e-mails and make phone calls while doing some localized advertising and having a booth at local events. In order to get on the governmental agenda, Natural Nights would probably have to rely on demonstrations, rallies, and supporters petitioning their elected officials. As has been stated above, this group would heavily depend on grassroots mobilization to be noticed by governmental officials. Natural Night would be able to tell if its policies were working by the percentage of public and private buildings in an area that had Dark Sky lights (lights that reduce skyglow). Another way to measure success would be to track the number of sea turtles that are found inland after getting confused by artificial lights and heading there rather than back out to
He brings up the point about animals and how they are affected by darkness decreasing. Bogard states that the 400 species of birds that migrate at night in North America, the sea turtles that lay their eggs at night and the bats that prey on insects in the dark are all being affected by the increase of artificial light (Bogard). Another aspect that makes this essay strong is the author’s word choice. Throughout the article, the author uses language that is rich and vibrant, but can also be understood by most people. He uses words like awash, sugary spreads and irreplaceable, among many others. The audience is easily entertained by his word choice and the overall flow of his writing. This strengthens his argument and makes the reading enjoyable to whoever reads it. Also, Bogard organizes his paper in a way that is easy to understand and follow. He presents problems of light pollution throughout the article and then follows them up with possible solutions and examples of how the solutions can be achieved or are currently being achieved. He discussed the problem of light pollution increasing every year and explained how Paris turns off their monument lighting at 1 a.m., suggesting that countries and
Does the group identify upcoming actions or events that will be important to the group? Are members asked to do anything in the near future? What are the group's priorities? Do they have a legislative agenda? Are there current bills in Congress connected to the group's interests? Is there any action at a state rather than federal level? Be specific in your responses
While Verlyn Klinkenborg has good authority on this topic he uses very little evidence that has been researched and proven. He only mentions two scientific studies. One talks about how light attracts animals and the other is a study that connects brightness in neighborhoods. Throughout the essay he gives what seems to be logical evidence that light pollution has a negative effect, but he is no scientist. The use of reliable scientific sources cited in the essay would have been better evidences. Klinkenborg could have supported his argument using sources.
Elie’s father died of dysentery, starvation, and exhaustion in Buchenwald, only weeks before the liberating army came to the gates of the camp. After the liberation, Elie described how their first act as free men was to throw themselves upon the provisions for such were the inhumane savages they had become.
There are many problems in Ohio that require attention for them to be solved. One of our main problems in Ohio right now is the level of algae we have in our lakes and rivers. Having algae in our lakes and rivers is dangerous for our present and future. Having our community drink water with algae in it can get people sick and poisoned. There have been many large algae blooms within these past few years, and having no preparations for the algae in the water caused immense panic in the community. There were stores that limited one case of water per customer, and most stores didn’t even have any water after only a couple hours, while the tap water wasn’t safe for only three days. Given that we didn’t know how long the algae would be in our water, no one was prepared and officials couldn’t tell us exactly when the water would be clean again. Most of the phosphorus that causes the algae to grow comes from our crops, like corn and wheat, being fertilized. This algae causes terror in our community and causes people to react in terrible ways. We need to have a solution figured out so that the terror stops and our families are safe. Having no water is one of the worst situations for so many people to be in when they aren’t prepared for it. This is an issue not only for our community, but for our whole country.
Currently, it is undoubtedly apparent that Texas has complications with its management of pollution in its multitudinous cities and metropolitan areas; such examples that distinctly portray the incompetence of maintaining a clean and healthy environment would be: detritus littering profusely in public places in cities, the health issues facing many Texans due to pollution, and the environmental ordeals occurring that effectively influence people, food, and water. Environmental pollution is a preeminent issue that needs to be allocated and resolved as swiftly as possible; it is an effort that would necessitate numerous organizations and communal aid.
The book Night by Elie Wiesel is an autobiography that depicts his lasting experience with the Holocaust. The book is written in Eliezer’s perspective and recounts his remarkable story. The memoir exhibits three prominent themes: father and son relationship, loss of faith, and inurement.
When the environment is disturbed, people are greatly affected, and this can cause serious damage to human and living beings. The proper utilization of these resources helps to control environmental pollution and can help for establishing clean and healthy environment. I will work with this committee to conserve the environment in the state of Texas and in the whole country.
HOAN is attempting to give the power of voice back to the individuals, taking away the power from corporations that rarely have incentives to aid environmental movements. As a citizens group, Heart has a very limited influence, however they try to affect change by putting pressure on the elected officials of Washington. This goal can be accomplished by informing people of the complete lack of progress the Department of Energy has made in the clean up, originally scheduled for 2011. HOAN then hopes that these informed citizens will realize the importance of the leaking tanks and attempt to contact their local legislature and executive figures (who have an election year approaching). This constant pressure would theoretically encourage the individuals who hold influence over the Washington State Department of Ecology to reconsider the new Tri-Party agreement and begin to enforce deadlines that would lead to action. My current role in the organization is connecting citizens to opportunities that would give the necessary information to provide their leaders with informed and reasonable concerns. I have done this by calling members and beginning to create a flyer for the upcoming December 5th meeting I will help lead. Additionally, I have
How many times have historical events been forgotten? Night, which was written by Elie Wiesel, describes the life of a twelve-year-old during his time in the concentration camps in Poland. When Elie and his family get transported to Auschwitz, he is quickly separated from his mother and sister, which will be the last time he sees them. He is able to stay with his father, but they go through a lot of starving and abuse to stay alive. As Elie and his father are transported from camp to camp, the hope of surviving is getting closer thanks to allied soldiers. Unfortunately, Elie’s father dies months before they can be recused due to starvation and dysentery. Elie is one of the few people to be able to live through the Holocaust, but his experience there has left him with many unforgettable scenes. The Holocaust is a time that should never be forgotten because it is a
Paul Bogard, a professor of creative nonfiction and environmental literature, in his work entitled, “Let There Be Dark” discusses the effects associated of light pollution. Bogard’s purpose is to display the harmful effects on humans and the ecosystems surrounding them due to the increase of light at night and how to solve them. He utilizes pathos, ethos, and logos in order to portray to readers the urgency and negative effects caused by light pollution.
With more people passed than survivors of the Holocaust, we rely on the survivors to give us insight on what the Holocaust was actually like. In the autobiography Night by Elie Wiesel, thousands of people learn true facts about what the torture and the pain was actually like for the ones who were unfortunate to suffer from this event in History. Elie gives specific and horrific examples of what he suffered and saw while he was at camp. Elie’s goal is to teach others the importance of human lives and why no human is replaceable and anyone is capable of doing anything. This book is highly recommended by myself, and many others such as: book reviewers, other authors, teachers, and students.
I have found any number of local and state groups that are active and vocal
In "Acquainted with the Night," by Robert Frost, a first person narrator wanders out of the night and then back again. During his dark and dim travels the man stops to listen to a cry from a distance. After his pause, the man continues on his journey, indifferent about the night.
“Acquainted with the Night” by Robert Frost dramatizes the conflict that the speaker experiences with the outside world, which has rejected him, or perhaps which he has rejected. The poem is composed of fourteen lines and seven sentences, all of which begin with “I have.” Frost’s first and last line, “I have been one acquainted with the night,” emphasizes what it means for the speaker to be “acquainted with the night” (line 1; 14). The speaker describes his walk in the night as journey, in which he has “walked out of rain—and back in rain” and “outwalked the furthest city light” (line 2-3). Through the depiction of the changing weather conditions, Frost signifies the passage of time, perhaps indicating that the narrator has been on his journey for a lengthy period of time and has traveled through many cities. Furthermore, the imagery of the rain at night creates a forlorn atmosphere in the poem.
