Navy Junior ROTC Class Analysis

More than 2,000 qualified young adults apply to participate in the annual Naval Academy Summer Seminar but only 850 of said applicants are selected to participate in each of the sessions. Knowing that the summer seminar deals with STEM and the Navy, I quickly applied myself so I can be one of those 850 selected young adults and participate in a science, technology, engineering, and math-loving atmosphere. I am interested in attending the Naval Academy Summer Stem program because I live and breathe science and engineering. I want to continue my path to higher education through the Naval Academy one day.

The past few months that I have spent in the JROTC program have instilled multiple army values in me through my experiences and allowed me to grow as a person. Several of the army values are as follows: loyalty, duty, respect, honor, integrity, and personal courage.

I took classes on parenting, job search skills, criminal thinking, budgeting, and basic life skills. I also completed over a hundred hours of community service. At the time, I looked at these opportunities as punishments, but looking back I realize that I was learning how to lead a healthier, more productive lifestyle. I also learned skills that could not be taught in a classroom. Among the most important are: patience, tolerance, responsibility, accountability, and humility.

Since freshman year, the Junior Reserves Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program has been an invisible hand of guidance that strived to bring out the best in me. This longstanding program has an impact on me in ways so innovative, it is impossible to find another program filled with diverse exhibitions of life lessons, discipline, and teamwork. JROTC has given me a lifelong readiness to combat the harsh realities of the real world that exist, which in return has helped me better myself and my community in contributions to being a citizen in the United States of America.

Most of the things I learned from this experience was a sense of purpose, cooperation, and expansion of knowledge dealing with the various forms of discrimination, as well as oppression. As the semester passed, I felt like I was finally advancing towards a career field that fits me. The topic/subject made it to my list of fields I may want to pursue when I attend a University, which is another benefit gained from my class. Like many other high school students, my mind ponders on the thought of what I truly want to pursue in college, so this was a huge step for me. Oakland Community College gave me the opportunity to test the waters and depict an idea of what attending a University may be like, so that is to say how much one can really learn from an experience like mine. Another thing I learned was that not everything can be done at the last minute, the way you imagined it should be. There should be an excessive amount of planning and thought that goes into completing certain assignments and projects, I remember staying up on some nights just to complete two to four essays. As guilty as I am, sometimes working under pressure motivates and builds my energy up. National Honors Society has guided me to become a better citizen, to help others, and to excel and pursue in my dreams. Leadership is the pillar that has changed me the most. It taught to not just tell others what to do, but to help them know how to do their tasks. It taught me to help others and to guide. Service has taught me to help those in need, no matter how demanding or compact the task. I learned that everybody is needing help in one way or another, and most don't even ask for assistance. However, any aid provided can make an impact. Scholarship has taught me that school is what guides us to our full potential. I would not have fully grasped this pillar without the help of my teachers, parents, and peers to support me and cheer me on.

I also benefitted greatly from the classroom activities such as the Tulsa Riot activity, the Titanic hypotheses, Tino’s interview, and many more. These acitivties made me realize that while history may be in the past, understanding it and knowing it really changes how you are in the present. The Tulsa Riot really taught me that just because it’s in the past does not mean that it’s no longer relevant, and to say that it’s not relevant is to say that the pain and suffering they went through is not relevant, and that is definitely NOT true. Tino’s interview also made me realize that I’ve been looking at the world through rose-tinted glass. Over the course of this class I have pieced together many things about my own life that before went unnoticed. I am now able to see things in a bit of a different light. Now that I have been introduced to the realm of psychology I understand some of the reasons for behavior around me. I have learned that there is a reason for most everything and a lot of our behaviors and mental processes can be explained through psychology. Studies have been conducted for many years to try and pinpoint the source of our behavior and it is not something that most people think about every day. Having a better understanding of why we operate the way we do will help me to better understand myself and the others around me.

This essay

My first visit to the Naval Academy was on family trip while in grammar school. On this and subsequent visits, the young men and women who chose to devote their lives to country and service greatly impressed me. As a high school student, I had the good fortune to experience Academy life via my acceptance to the competitive Summer STEM program, my invitation to Candidate Visit Weekend, and my participation in the Elite Throws Sports Camp. Through these first-hand experiences, I grew in awareness and commitment to an Academy education as an opportunity to enable me to serve my country. Moreover, I am honored to be a member of a gold star family, via my uncle Senior Master Sergeant Peter Bondi, recently deceased on active duty, and to have had a grandfather who served in the National Guard. Eulogies delivered for my Uncle Peter reflected a life of service and were a source of inspiration that fueled my resolve to serve.
