School counselors conduct needs assessments to identify gaps so that interventions can be implemented that support closing those gaps. The focus of this needs assessment is to identify the gaps that sixth grade students have concerning their middle grade transition needs in the academic, procedural, and social areas. This paper focus on identifying and analyzing the format of this needs assessment instrument and the rationale for the selection. Further, an analysis of how the needs assessment data supports intervention recommendations is discussed. Finally, the needs assessment instrument is analyzed. By working in a public school setting, I hope to integrate aspects of assessment, counseling, research, and skill training to create individualized intervention plans, and provide an optimum learning environment for all students. After receiving the opportunity to work with children with exceptionalities at Camp MATES and the social skills groups, I was stunned to discover how underserved that population is. I was appalled by the obscene amounts of money parents pay for their children to receive services tailored to them and their exceptionalities and how difficult it can be to get into those programs. As a School Psychologist, I hope to make academic success more attainable for all students despite their socioeconomic background. My goal is to assess students who are struggling academically to find an educational method that suits their individual differences and be able to refer them to community resources if needed. For this assignment I reached out to an instructor at Lakeland College who is also a professional school counselor named Wendy Falk. Wendy was happy to complete an interview with me and provided information about herself including what assessments she uses, her theoretical orientation, and why these assessments are used. Wendy also spoke about her school counseling position, a difficult case she was presented with, and her opinion on the use of assessments. Our focus was determined by The School Improvement Team (SIT) based on recommendations from the Comprehensive Needs Assessment (CNA) provided by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) and shared in part A of AAPSL. Standard three confronts the topic of Middle Level Philosophy and School Organization. Teachers must use their knowledge to enhance learning for all students (race, ethnicity, age, culture, sexual orientation, etc.) and a way to do this is through developmentally responsive programs. Counseling programs allow teachers and guidance counselors to work together to help improve the negative stages of growth for 10-15 year olds. Middle level professionals work as one to serve as advocates, address special needs, help adolescents to make sound choices, help further cognitive and academic goals, address psychosocial needs and promote transition between elementary and secondary schools.

There were several reasons for conducting this needs assessment. The first reason was to address the multi-sensory needs of preschool children. It is important to address this because during their early years, children learn by exploring their surroundings. Thus, preschoolers need a structured sensory environment that not only stimulate their senses but also teaches them new development skills such as cause and effect (Messauber, 2012).
