Growing up, Percy never knew his dad. His mother (who they’ll talk about in a minute) eventually married a seriously heinous dude name Gabe Ugliano, or Smelly Gabe. They live in an apartment in Queens, NY, and Gabe likes to make Percy's life and Percy's mom's life a living hell. As a result, Percy's life perspective can be a bit negative at times.Percy didn’t want to be alone without his mother because he never had father that he could live up to and that can be there for him so he killed himself just to be in
Percy Jackson’s mum in the story is called Sally Jackson who was in a relationship with Poseidon, who left her to go on a journey across the Atlantic Ocean, and he never came back. Sally is now married to Gabe who wasn’t very nice, smelt and didn’t really care about Percy, but Sally may have married Gabe to protect Percy, because the smell may keep the monsters and bad away from him. We also get the feeling off Gabe that he doesn’t want Percy around (Riordan, 2005, p.32) ‘During school months, it was Gabe’s ‘study’. He didn’t study anything in there other than old car magazines, but he loved shoving my stuff in the closet, leaving his muddy boots on the windowsill.’ and would be happy to see him go, which is the same in the story of Perseus, where Polydectes tries to get rid of Perseus, because he doesn’t want Polydectes to be with Danae. Percy not liking Gabe could be part of a retelling of the story of Perseus. Where Zeus is portrayed as Gabe, and Danae is Sally, and Zeus sends Danae and her baby (Percy Jackson) to an island beach where a fisherman found them, took them home with him and looked after them. Where as in the Percy Jackson story, Sally takes Percy on a break to the beach (Long Island), much against Gabe’s wishes, and instead of a fisherman finding them; it was Grover who came to help them. The change to the myth story is because Riordan believes that this is the way this situation would be portrayed in a
Although he doesn’t get to see her much he still loves her more than anything and would do anything to keep her safe, like fighting the minotaur. He spends the whole book trying to save his mother from the Greek god Hades. Percy also tries to save his mother from his stepdad, “Smelly Gabe”, who hurts his mother. Although Percy doesn’t have a lot of real family, he meets a lot of friends who become like family to him. Percy learns that his fatal flaw is caring too much, yet he still does everything he can for his family.
When Percy and his mother, Sally go to Montauk Beach in New York, Grover comes to tell them to leave immediately. A terrible storm rages as the drive to the New York countryside, a Minotaur which is half man and half bull, attacks them. It takes Sally blinding a flash of gold light. Percy uses one of its horns to kill it. Percy wakes up three days later being healed by nectar and ambrosia, which is the food of the gods at Camp Half-Blood. Percy is places in a hermes cabin where all the unclaimed half-blood’s stay. After many water related incidents, a trident mark appears above Percy’s head as a father and then Poseidon claims him. The Oracle at the camp tells Percy to find the master lightning bolt of “Zeus” who is a supreme god of gods and Greeks, since Poseidon is contradicted for stealing it. Percy has defeated many mythological monsters, including Medusa and many more, Percy and his friends Annabeth and Grover find Hades who has taken Percy’s mother, Sally, but had his symbol of power stolen too. Hades also accuses Percy of stealing his Helm of Darkness and threatens him that he will kill his mother and release the dead into the world. Percy and his friends then use magical pearls to transport them out of Hades’s kingdom and then after
that Greek gods exist, and have been closely observing western culture and ideas. The author draws parallels to Percy’s life, who is an American teenager, with that of Greek heroes. This parallel helps the readers to relate to the book, essentially engaging the young readers to learn about Greek mythology and the lessons of life that it teaches, in a not so bland way. The protagonist of the novel, Percy Jackson, is revealed to be special in some way. This section also develops other supporting characters, such as Chiron, Percy’s teacher, who also was mentor to Hercules and Grover, who is Percy’s sidekick, a multi-dimensional character with his own past, hopes and concerns. The association of Chiron and Percy foretells that Percy will carry on heroic deeds in future. Percy fights Minotaur, a monster that even Theseus fought and defeated. In the process of defeating Minotaur, Percy loses his mother, which he feels was his last hope to returning to his normal human life. By drawing parallels between Percy and various heroes of Greek Mythology, the author shows Percy in the light of a hero. A hero who is yet to prove his worth in the Camp Half-Blood. His encounter with Clarisse at a bathroom in camp, allows him to show his strength, which was very similar to that of his father Poseidon, but also instils in some ways fear amongst the camp
Percy Jackson is selfless in many ways. He always puts himself in danger to help his loved ones out of danger while his friends ask him to leave them and finish the rest of the quest, but he stays and put himself in danger. Furthermore, on page 59 it says “Hey! I screamed, waving the jacket, running to one side of the monster. Hey, stupid! Ground beef!" this quote shows that Percy is trying to keep the attention on him so that his loved ones can get out. Instead of running away to the camp he stayed and helped his friend.
Throughout the novel, Percy Jackson is a known trouble-maker, sent to a school for troubled kids, called “Yancy Academy’. He is out casted from classmates and sees very unusual things during his time at Yancy Academy. His teacher Mr. Brunner and his friend Grover act very unusual after Percy spies on them during the night. During Percy’s summer his father
It includes significant Greek mythology, like the incorporation of the gods and many mythological monsters and creatures, and incorporates it into an engaging fictional plot. It also shows major character development. The reader can tell from the first page that PErcy was an awkward, almost clumsy and inexperienced, character. He seems to not know who he really is and his true self. Throughout the story, PErcy questions himself, his morals, and his values. On one of the islands in the Sea of Monsters, he is turned into a guinea pig by Circe, a minor goddess of magic who hates men. She tells him that he now embodies his true self. Also, whenever he and Annabeth encounter Luke, they both wonder if they really are and should be loyal to their parents, the gods. In the end of the book, Percy seems more sure of himself and more confident in who he is. He had gained a brother and some much-needed experience after fighting so many monsters, whether figurative or literal. However, in the end, all of his newfound confidence is shattered and disarrayed, when Thalia returns, as he has no idea what to do. To summarize, the Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan is a great book which tells the stories of the gods in a more modern and realistic way, while also showing character development and much
The reason Percy was there was because he got into a lot of trouble in all of his other schools, leading to him being kicked out and put into Yancy. Percy also displayed thoughts of frightful feelings towards his friend Grover announcing he had “ditched Grover” (29) showing that he may have felt scared from Grover saying “Why does this always happen?” and “Why does it always have to be in sixth grade?” (29). Percy was a very loyal son to his mother by expressing how he wanted to be with her in saying “ I wanted to be with my mom in our little apartment on the Upper East Side, even if I had to go to public school and
Percy took his mom’s side on everything.
Despite never admitting it, Percy constantly afraid of the challenges ahead of him like most heroes. To replenish this fear that constantly haunts him, he stays hopeful. The author Rick Riordan is known to show hope in a humorous way, for example, when Percy is being told by Chiron that the quest, he was about to go on was extremely dangerous and could either end or save the world. Also that if he failed the quest he would most likely be punished by Zeus himself. So one the most common ways the gods punish mortals or other gods who have wronged them is by turning the person or god into an animal. Which made Percy say “It’s better than being turned into a dolphin” (Riordan 139). There aren’t many people in the world who will be able to apprehend, and cope with it so well, that they are able to make jokes out of such a deliberate situation, Percy however, is one of those very few people. This quote seems to show a sense of cockiness in Percy’s personality. However, there isn’t much to be cocky about he’s dyslexic, has been expelled from several school’s, drawed the shortest possible straw when it came to luck, and lives in a puny apartment with his mother and her abusive boyfriend Gabe. All these things sound exceptionally harsh, but these thing motivate Percy to look on the bright side of every situation, despite having it seem like he never gets to live on that side.
At the beginning of the story, Percy is a boarding student at Yancy Academy. There he made friends with Grover. During his school excursion he is attacked by his math teacher Mrs. Dodds, who turns out to be a fury. She accused him of having stolen the thunderbolt and demanded to bring it back to its owner. After this accident, he, escorted by his mother and Grover, is going to the Camp Half-Blood in New York. The camp is the safest place for demigods from monsters. But on their way to camp, the Minotaur assaulted them and killed his mother, Sally. But soon Percy got learn that there is a chance to save her, because she is kept in the Underworld “in hands” of Hades.
Sally's parents tragically died in an unfortunate plane crash when Sally was five. When Percy was a baby, his father, Poseidon, left to protect him and his mother from evil monsters. However, Poseidon visited him when he was in his cradle, which Percy described as a "golden glow" and his father's warm smile and a hand on his head. When he was a toddler, his mother married Gabe Ugliano, whom Percy despised and called "Smelly Gabe" because of his body odor that smelled like moldy garlic pizza wrapped in gym
He saves the god of death which leads up to the Mark of Athena he where meets up with Annabeth and the rest of the seven to go on the quest to the house of Hades to save Nico and then go to defeat Gaea. Percy has also had so many people look up to him. “Percy is the most powerful demigod I've ever met. No offense to you guys but it's true.” said Nico from The Mark of Athena. Percy also fell into Tartarus with Annabeth with only a sword. They could have died if they didn't have each other.
This shows that he is loyal because no matter what he has to do to find her he will and this also proves Percy is loyal to Annabeth. His friends also help him find Annabeth which shows that they trust Percy and they believe that what he is doing is the right thing to do. The next big act of loyalty in The Titan’s Curse
When he was in Tartarus with Annabeth and the 3 Vampires find them and want to fight. There was silence after there conversation that Percy and Annabeth had with the 3 Vampires and then the Vampires attack. The toughest one and the strongest goes after Annabeth because no demigod has died in Tartarus. The other two Vampires go after Percy. Annabeth was pinned to the ground and was getting her blood sucked. Same with Percy except there were 2 Vampires on him both sucking his blood. He didn’t realize that he called for someone to help. Someone came down and killed the three monsters. He introduced himself and his name was Bob, Bob the Titan. He said that Percy called him and said that he needed help, but Percy doesn’t recall calling someone for help but he did. This revealed an action that Percy never knew that he could do.
