“A New Birth of Freedom”? Abraham Lincoln advocated “the great task” in his Gettysburg Address, but to reach this point where the entire nation would experience “a new birth freedom” seemed impossible. Some factors that made it difficult for various segments of the population to fully realize and experience Lincoln’s “new birth of freedom” were African-American suppression and unjust wages and laws, and the displacement of Native Americans and working class Americans. The federal government, along with many other organizations and individuals strove to improve the lives of those affected by post-Civil War chaos and corruption, but never fulfilled Lincoln’s vision. Some white Americans had long hungered and thirst for power and control over others. Though the need for domination has been evidenced many times throughout history, like with the Nazi Party, this evil is not something natural amongst humans. Frederick Douglass states in his publication The Color Line that children do not hate someone because they are different: they are simply curious about them. “Aside from the curious contrast to himself, the white child feels nothing on the first sight of a colored man. Curiosity is the only feeling” (Douglass, 6). Despite this statement, many Whites still argued that their prejudice “is a natural, instinctive, and invincible attribute of the white race, and one that cannot be eradicated” (Douglass, 4).
