New Deal liberalism reached its zenith in the 1960s. With Great Society programs greatly expanding the role of the government in the average citizen’s life, and poverty reaching its lowest point in quite some time. The 1960s heralded comprehensive civil rights legislation, continued progress towards integration, and several other programs and policies that was part of new deal liberalism. The latter half of the 1960s, and the 1970s, however, resulted in massive changes in public opinion. This time period was characterized by civil unrest and riots and protests.
