During the latter part of the nineteenth century, presumably around the 1890's, it became known as the Progressive Era, a time of change, reform, and adaptation. As Vernon L. Parrignton put it, it was a "democratic renaissance" (Vernon L. Parrington in The Progressive Movement: Liberal or Conservative). So what was Progressivism? Well, its main goals were to curb corporate power, to end business monopolies, and to wipe out political corruption. The Progressive Era was a period that changed America greatly due to political reforms and social activism. This era brought forth many changes in America and almost all Americans were involved in this movement somehow. This period began in the late 1800s and lasted until the mid-1900s. The Progressive Era was one of the biggest movements in America. The main point of this movement was to purify the government. Several historians have wrote excerpts on their perspective of the Progressive Era. George Mowry, Joseph Huthmacher, and Glenda Elizabeth Gilmore are three key Progressive historians. In their writings, each of the historians explain who the Progressives were, who was affected during this time, events that took place in the community and government, and other topics.

Within such a short time period you see so much anger, violence, triumphs, heartbreak, and social change. The author explicit states each of his central concepts such as the Vietnam War, Civil Rights, and student action making it easier for the reader to follow along and understand the importance these movements had in motivating and changing America. While the liberal experienced emotional changes amid the 1970s, the Communist agreement experienced reduced rates of development yet not the sorts of amazing economic rebuilding that happened in the West. These improvements in the 1970s suggested the Cold War's determination in the 1980s. The New Deal of the 1930s and the civil rights legislation and movements of the 1960s were very different in what they did, but shared a common goal of bettering the country when they were introduced, and making the country better in the future. The New Deal of the 1930s and its programs were able to help millions of Americans get their feet back on the ground after the Great Depression. Civil rights legislation of the 1960s helped African-Americans get the respect and equality they deserved after slavery had been eradicated.

On March 4, 1933, when FDR took the oath of office to become the 32nd President of the United States, America was a country in the midst of the worst economic crisis in its history.

The Great Depression was one of the most devastating events in human history. When FDR was president, his administration contributed to the creation of relief programs in order to help solve the problems of the Great Depression such as the effects of the stock market crash. The government was helping the nation get back on it’s feet by being involved more in people’s daily lives. Franklin D. Roosevelt and his administration created relief programs in order to help Americans after the Great Depression. In Document C, FDR states, “Its evolution, not revolution, Gentlemen”!

Presidency changes every four years allowing Americans to see new and different results. From 1929 until 1939 the Great Depression shocked all of America. The Great Depression occurred after the stock market crashed revealing underlying problems in the United States’ economy. The banks were giving out risky loans and the farmers were overstocking on crops. The previous president, Herbert Hoover, did not try much to solve this major economic downfall. He was worried about too much government interference. He resulted in violence when protests arose and people even built shanty towns and called them Hoovervilles to mock him for not helping the poor. The nation really needed the government’s help. For many individuals in the United States, the late 1970s were a troubled and disturbing time. The Watergate scandal, the Vietnam War, ambiguity in the Middle East and the economic crisis in the Nation had weakened the confidence of Americans in their government and in their fellow residents as well. Many Americans supported a new conservatism in social, economic and political life during the 1980s, distinguished by policies of President Ronald Reagan. The sixties seemed to challenge basic American assumptions; the value of hard work and of traditional family values. “Middle” America formed 55% of the population, earning between $5000 and $15000 p.a. They lived between the city slums and the affluent suburbs, and were usually up to their eyes in debt. They wanted the law to protect them and their property. They believed in good manners, in respect for authority and the flag. The changes of the sixties left many of them confused and angry. They were not sure who to blame for social unrest. They were the silent minority that Nixon appealed to in his election campaign, and they helped him to victory. They were the resentment and reaction byproduct of social unrest. They worked to ensure their property and found it unfair that the government gave money to the people that did not work as much as they did. They wanted law and order. They wanted a state that provided security, response to the insecurity they felt in face of the students movement and the liberal culture. They felt ignored by the democrat government because they did not benefit from the financial help, house and health security.

When one looks back on the frenetic 1960s, conservative sentiments aren’t usually the first thing to come to mind. Yet, while the New Left and the radical counterculture were reshaping cultural ideals, it was the New Right who emerged from the 1960s as a viable political force. The New Left can be categorized as a broad, largely youthful, movement with the goal to challenge various social norms and to institute a “participatory democracy”. Moreover, the New Left was “New” in a sense that they differed from the labor-centered liberal elites at the time; insisting on creating larger, more radical changes to society. On the other hand, the New Right was a largely grassroots movement aimed to restore traditionalist values from the “Eastern Establishment.” The New Right was “New” in a sense that it revitalized conservative hope at a time when those hopes looked mighty bleak. When analyzing the wildly different outcomes of the two movements, it becomes apparent that the New Right’s political-oriented manner to achieve their goals proved to be the decisive factor in maintaining long-term stability; something the confrontational New Left did not have the resources to achieve from the outset.

In the '70s, television programs and stations dedicated to spreading the word about Christianity encouraged the idea that liberalism had negatively affected American morals and values. These were perilous times. The thirties and the sixties were very different but they also were very much the same. Both decades saw the democrats take the presidency as well as the House and the Senate. Both decades were led by presidents who envisioned a “New” America. Roosevelt called it the “New Deal”, while the 60s president called it the “New Frontier”. Both called for liberal reforms. However John F. Kennedy was assassinated before he could carry out his vision(Ourdocuments.gov).
