This work of art is titled, Monterey Bay from Santa Cruz Pogonip. The artist who created this piece is Tom Killion, and its creation came to be in 2002. The piece is a wood stamp press, these presses are hand carved into wood and linoleum blocks. Each variety of color that is present in the piece, a new block has to be created to ensure that the color doesn’t blend in ways the artist would not want it too. In the framed final piece, the stamp is separated into two different frames to gives focus to the the, Monterey Bay and then Santa Cruz. In this piece, Killion uses this chance to portray Santa Cruz in a landscape narrative, he uses depth to enable the landscape. The piece’s foreground is the mountain in Pogonip, a hiking area in the northern part of Santa Cruz County; then it starts spreading out to a horizontal view of the ocean, and at the bottom of the mountain, Santa Cruz is located. In the depiction of the town you see the shadows of the Big Dipper, an amusement park attraction and the historic Holy Cross Catholic Church.

My experience at Stony Brook Wildlife Sanctuary included working hands-on, alone or with other volunteers, and bringing our questions to our mentors. I worked with another volunteer to take census of salamanders living under square boards of wood in the forest. We loved to see the small amphibians crawl around in the dirt and hide under the leaves. Along with salamanders we would find slugs, crickets, centipedes, and others. I loved being able to find little creatures and observe them in their natural states. We would sometime find a bug which we couldn’t identify, so we would take pictures of it to show the staff. After they helped us identify the insect, they would tell us whatever background knowledge they had of the bug, which was usually quite impressive. These mentors have inspired me to be like them and to one day fill the role of a mentor to someone who loves the environment like I do. I want to be able to provide people

New York City’s ground and surface waters are being contaminated with heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants, and nutrients that have an adverse effect on human health (Bharali, 2007). However, eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) act as nature’s biofiltration system, each providing ~50 gallons of purified water per day (Merrill, 2014). New York harbor once had up to 350 square miles of oysters, producing roughly about 300,000 bushels a year (Nigro, 2011). Today, that population has substantially decreased due to the effect of bacterial contamination, over harvesting, pollution and sewage (Munoz, et al. 2010). Only a small number of oysters remain in the NYC harbor, and that damage cannot be fixed without proactive conservation

Of course this is my children’s favorite place in the Aquarium. It features a number of touch tanks with searays and sharks as well as exhibits featuring sea turtles and the wildlife of coral reef. My family and I spend several hours in here petting the sea life. There is also a café and souvenir shop. My daughter still has the big finding Nemo stuffed animal that we purchased on our first visit in 2005.
