According to the New York City Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB) website (http://www.nyc.gov/html/ccrb/html/home/home.shtml), accessed September 17, 2016, the CCRB is an independent city agency that handles complaints against New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers by civilians. The four types of allegations under the agency’s jurisdiction are: force, abuse of authority, discourtesy, and offensive language. Use of excessive or unnecessary force involves punching, shoving, choking, using pepper spray, and other behavior up to and including the use of deadly force. Abuse of authority refers to abuse of police powers to intimidate or mistreat a civilian such as an officer’s refusal to provide identification or an improper “stop, question,

Chicago has had its share of police corruption and scandals throughout the city’s history. Officials always vowing that corruption will never happen. One of the corruption cases that caught my attention was about Joseph Miedzianowski. According to NewOne, Joseph Miedzianowski is ranked number 4 as the most corrupt cop in the U.S. of all time. Joseph Miedzianowski was a Chicago police officer for 22 years. He served as a police officer and a drug kingpin shaking down drug dealers. He also ran Chicago’s gang unit and his own gang dealing drugs (NewsOne. 2011).

NYC policing has been an ongoing problem for many years now, but in recent years it has gone to the point that civilians are starting to kill off our protection. What are the main issues for the police to abuse their power on us citizen’s, is it being racist affecting on how they do their job or is it another element being in played for cops to abuse their powers? In my paper, I will be talking about the certain trainings that an officer should receive before and after finishing the police academy. Being trained in a certain way can affect the way that a cop will do their job and if a police officer is not being trained in an efficient way then it can cause chaos with us as citizens. What is the true problem within police officers in New York
Police departments across the country and their actions of their employees have been scrutinized a lot lately in the media. Not only the way their employees behave but the way they recruit potential employees. Police officers take an oath to protect the communities that they serve in and uphold the constitution no matter what race, gender or ethnicity. With that being said, police officers should also be made up of people of different genders, races, and ethnicities.

New York Police Department and abbreviated NYPD, is a police state belonging to the city of New York. New York Police specialize in the most important issues in American history by searching for the killer and the dimensions of the drug phenomenon and the fight against terrorism and chase the criminals and invalidate booby-traps, New York Police Department was founded in 1845. It is the largest police force in the United States, which has key responsibilities in law enforcement and investigation within the five boroughs of New York City, which is one of the oldest police departments established in the United States where they can retrace traces its roots until the year 1625 when it was claimed
Internal Affairs is a division of the law enforcement agency that reassures citizens that the police will address, and resolve unethical behavior by police officers. Due to the pressure from the public, most if not all, police departments throughout the country now operate Internally through the review boards they investigate corruption, misconduct and brutality. Such investigations are not governed by legal constraints, and police officers are charged with fewer crimes than other criminals who are brought before a judge.
Leading up to the establishment of the Chicago Police Department, the first rank of “constable” was created in 1830. Authorization of Chicago’s very own police force occurred on January 31, 1835. On August 15, 1835, the Chicago Police Department was born. The department’s mission reads, “The Chicago Police Department, as part of, and empowered by, the community, is committed to protect the lives, property, and rights of all people, to maintain order, and to enforce the law impartially. We will provide quality police service in partnership with other members of the community. To fulfill our mission, we will strive to attain the highest degree of ethical behavior and professional conduct at all times.” Orsemus Morrison was elected Chicago’s first constable; he was assisted by Constables Luther Nichols and John Shrigley. The three men served and protected a population of about 3,200. In the year 1837, the Municipal Court of Chicago was created. It had co-jurisdiction with the Cook County Court within corporate limits of the city of Chicago. Between the years 1838 and 1854, the Chicago P.D consisted of very few collection of officers, constables, and part-time night watchers to maintain the quickly-expanding city.
The Toronto Police Service are tasked with providing impartial legal security and protection to all Torontonians without discrimination based on gender, age, race, ethnic origin, religion, sexual orientation, and disability. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom under section 15 protects all members of society, including the most vulnerable and marginalized individuals are inherently granted equal protection and benefit of the law (Randall, 2010). The absence of equality and the promotion of stereotypical and social prejudices in police practices however were questioned in the case of Jane Doe v. Toronto (Metropolitan) Commissioners of Police. As the paper explores the consequences of police negligence, the Toronto Police Service exercised
Corruption within the New York Police Department is a quickly growing phenomenon; to an extent, this is largely due to the cop culture that encourages silence and draws the line at honesty. The good, honest officers are afraid to speak up against co-workers and in the process become corrupt themselves. When police departments were first established in the mid-nineteenth century, corruption quickly followed suit. It began with minor acts of misconduct and today deals with serious criminal activities. Scholars have noted that there is a strong correlation between the officers taking part in corrupt acts and officers wanting to fit in with the culture. In this paper, I argue that the deeper an officer in the New York police department gets into the police culture, the more likely it is that they become involved in narcotic corruption
The definition of adverse impact is “the overall impact of employer practices that result in significally higher percentages of members of minorities and other protected groups being rejected for employment, placement, and promotion.” (Gary Dessler, page 503) Adverse impact plays a huge role in some companies and usually results in court cases and trials, with legal expenses adding up very quickly. The Baltimore Police Department seems to be in hot water with the city. It appears that within the police department, adverse impact is present. Even though the Baltimore Police Department may not have intended to discriminate, it appears that their hiring process may have just done that. For example, if there was an exam that the applicant had

It is an early Saturday morning. It’s the first day of the academy and an officer already yelling at you saying “ Who told you you could be a cop?”. Heart beats fast from being nervous and not knowing to expect next. These people have chosen to put their life at risk; but say it’s a worthy cost because they say “we protect, we serve”.
In the 1990s, the growth of violent crime reached its all-time high in New York City. In response to the number of high murder rates in the 1990s, the New York City Police Department realized that their efforts to reduce crime were ineffective. The local news reported that New Yorkers were afraid to wear their jewelry in public. Some reported they had to sprint to the subway exit to avoid victimization when the door opened. The New York City Police Department decided to implement a practice of Stop, Question, and Frisk. This practice became known as Stop -and- Frisk (Bellin, 2014). Stop-and Frisk” was a method in which an officer stopped a pedestrian and asked them a question, and then frisked them for any weapon or contraband (Rengifo & Slocum, 2016). By the late 1990s, stop-and frisk became a common practice implemented by New York City Police Department (Bellin, 2014).
