My favorite musical we have watched in here is a tie between Newsies and Les Mis, but this about Newsies. Newsies is a phenomenal Broadway production. Fun fact it was released as The News Boys in the United Kingdom. It was produced by Walt Disney Pictures and directed by choreographer Kenny Ortega. Newsies is based loosely on the New York City Newsboy Strike of 1899, and features twelve original songs from composers Alan Menken and J.A.C Redford. The stars are Christian Bale, David Moscow, Bill Pullman, Robert Duvall, and Ann Margret. Another fact is it was the first completely live action musical Disney produced musical. It was nominated for eight Tony awards, winning two. The plot is Newsies in New york are selling news papers, but one day come to …show more content…
When it was realeased Newsies at first received negative to mixed reviews from critics and audiences and was a box office bomb, failing to recoup its 15 million budget, But soon became very popular and widely liked. Now the actual Newsboys Strike of 1899 , lasted much longer. It lasted from July 20th to August 2nd. The strike was as well lead by one-eyed young man named Louis Ballat who was nick named “Kid blink”. And in the musical was as a minor supporting role , with another actual real life newsie MAurice Cohen were the inspiration for “CowBoy Kelly.” As well the actual strike ended with a compromise: The Journal and The World agreed to buy back all unsold copies of the newspapers. Another fun fact is that the NewsBOys strike of 1899 was told in David Nasaw’s book Children of the City: At work and at Play. The musical opened to previews on Broadway at the Nederlander Theatre with a limited engagement from March 15th , 2012 to march 28 2012. They performed “King of New York “ in the thanksgiving parade for that year. The show has earned Eight Tony awards, and won 3 which were , Best Musical , Best Choreography and Best original
Teechers, a play written by John Godber in 1987, bases itself on youth and the playwrights own perspective of the corrupt education system. His poignant introduction to the text of the play begins, "Teechers was designed to be played by three actors, multi-role-playing twenty other parts in a play-within-a-play format.” Everything about the play is reduced to the bare minimum: actors, stage, and audience." And this ideology of "essentials" is the centre piece for the play. He wittily applies a Brechtian approach with three pupils, Salty, Gail, and Hobby who are able to use this versatility from multi-rolling in portraying many characters served with a platter of comedic and melodramatic nature. On a serious note though, the play is Somewhat
The musical was a collaborative effort by the two talents of Rodgers and Hammerstein. Prior to Carousel, the two had found success in various shows independently including shows like The Boys From Syracuse, Pal Joey, and Show Boat. After a falling out between Rodgers and his previous writing partner Hart due to alcoholism, Rodgers approached Hammerstein for opportunity to create new work together (Columbia). On March 31st 1943 Rodgers and Hammerstein found major success with the hit musical, Oklahoma! (Hauser). The musical was the duo’s first step in a direction of evolution in response to resistance to their vision for musical theater. The two had wanted to produce a musical that told more complex stories and substantial character arcs and psychologies, but found resistance in their older partners (Columbia). It was not until the two had met up to work together that they began their journey into their own artistic vision. Naturally after the success of
State Fair The first musical created by Rodgers and Hammerstein that was made especially for the screen was State Fair. The source came from the novel of the same name by Phil Stong. The release date was August 20, 1945.
Energy and enthusiasm make a musical worth seeing. That’s just what ISA’s version of Alan Parker’s “Bugsy Malone” delivered on March 18 in the Queen Elizabeth Theater. The Middle School cast presented the gangster musical set in the 1920’s, in New York City with plenty of pratfalls, strong singing talent, and enough comedy to keep the audience laughing all the way through the
On the night of December 27, 1927 the musical Show Boat opens (Laufe 475). The show ends in silence; no applause or a standing ovation. There was not even a curtain call. (Sheed 120) Producer Florenz Ziegfeld thought that the show had failed. (Sheed 120) What he did not know that night was that Show Boat was to go on to be one of the most influential shows in American musical theatre. Show Boat revolutionized American musical theatre by changing the setting of the average musical theatre work to America to make the show inherently American, by changing and challenging what topics could be discussed, and by making the songs an integrated part of the musical that emphasize the themes, express the emotions of the characters, and move the story along.
Newsies takes place in 1899 New York and focuses on a group of kids, specifically Jack Kelly and David Jacobs, who try to make a living selling newspapers whether it be to help out the family or to simply survive on their own. However, this becomes increasingly hard when Joseph Pulitzer raises paper prices to try and give his competition a run for their money. As one can assume, this does not go over well with the newsies, so banding together, they form a union and go on strike. Overall, I think that the
All the actors were required to sing and for being a high school production they did really well. The director did an excellent job casting the group of actors.
This production of the jazzy musical is skillfully carried out with a new dance around every corner. The ten members of the cast all perform with lots of enthusiasm and excitement, which keeps the audience captivated during every scene. One singer who especially stands out was Davion Jones. In every scene Jones acts in it is clear how invested he is in his work as well as his delight when doing
On Saturday, November 14th, 2015 the Newsies touring company performed at the Straz Center in Tampa, Florida. Newsies is a musical based on real events that occurred in 1899 when newspaper boys went on strike. This essay will be on the performance attended and opinions based on what was seen. There are many things that can make a difference on whether or not the performance was successful such as the costumes, the text itself, the music, the performances by the actors, the choreography, and the stage and scenic design.
But now, he can take extra papers without the risk of not being able to sell them. Thus, increasing the circulation of both paper industries. This resulted in the disbanding of The Newsboys Union. This particular strike resulted in other strikes to occur in cities across the country. Including the Butte, Montana Newsboy Strike of 1914, and the 1920’s Louisville, Kentucky Newsboys Strike. A few decades later, after numerous strikes, the urban child-welfare practice led to better conditions for the newsies. In particular, housing, food, and safer
Taking place in downtown West Palm Beach, Dreyfoos School of the Arts put on Shrek the Musical. The sensational production took place in the Meyer Hall. Shrek the Musical was originally produced on Broadway by DreamWorks Theatrical and Neal Street Productions. It was Directed and choreographed by Michelle Petrucci and Musical Direction was done by Dominic Raffa. However the original Direction was done by Jason Moore. There were brief moments when I forgot that this was a high school production. I felt like I was see a Broadway musical or at least a decent off Broadway musical.
If there is truly tradition to be found among the great theatres both on and off Broadway, then certainly the Sullivan Street Playhouse and its long running production of The Fantasticks rates as one of the most celebrated of New York theatrical traditions. Maintaining its place as the longest running production Off Broadway, The Fantasticks remains an enchanting and insightful tale of both young love and bitter disillusionment. It also reminds one, in this age of spectacle and the mega-musical, how powerful and truly inspiring theatre itself can be. Clearly, one of the great strengths of this production and a large part of its appeal for audiences over the last
Ever since the first time songs from the soundtrack of Newsies appeared on my Pandora app, I was immediately in love with it. Of course, when I found out that it was recorded with the original cast to be put on Netflix, as soon as I got home that Friday afternoon, I immediately watched it and was completely hooked. The beautiful set, the amazing makeup, costumes, the songs, harmony, and cast everything was absolutely perfect, as if I was watching a Broadway show right in front of my eyes, and not in an app on a small screen.
Two great writers of American musical theatre, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, had one idea in common. They wanted to present to the American public a new and revolutionary musical that would stand out above the rest. They wanted to make an impact on the societies of the era. They wanted to be creative and do something that was considered rebellious. When they finally combined their ideas together they created an American masterpiece in musical theatre: Oklahoma!. It was the first Rodgers and Hammerstein collaboration, starting the most successful creative partnership in the history of American musical theatre.
Porgy and Bess is a Musical written by George Gershwin, Du Bose Hayward, and Ira Gershwin. The musical is a culmination of years of work by George Gershwin in order to write a dramatic opera. The music of Porgy and Bess infuses many different styles and genres of music. The opera itself is known as a “Folk Opera” because it relies heavily on the influence of the African American experiences. He drew upon many cultural hymns, work songs, and spirituals to create the original works for this timeless musical. Throughout this movie, we see the development of Catfish row from their interactions with the title characters. Unfortunately upon the creation of this project created a lot of problems in the African—American community. Many felt it only perpetuated the stereotypes through its explorations of drug abuse, rape, violence, murder, and prostitution. Despite its negative themes, this production empowers black actors. For this story tells of a community sticking together and fighting for justice.
